Colin Kaepernick, the NFL’s original anthem protester and celebrated Nike pitchman, is set to receive an honorary degree from Morgan State University. The university announced Wednesday that Kaepernick would receive the honorary degree alongside filmmaker David E. Talbert and education equity advocate David Burton. Morgan State University President David Wilson released a statement celebrating the three honorees. Leadership, Integrity, Innovation, Diversity, Excellence and Respect are more than just words that appear on the flags that adorn our campus, or words that we utter casually when reciting our core values, they represent the embodiment of who we are and what a Morgan graduate stands for. With this notion in mind, we intentionally sought a collection of individuals who truly embody these principles, and thankfully we have assembled a trio of diverse voices who have bravely stood—and kneeled—for the betterment and advancement of the voiceless, the marginalized and … [Read more...] about Kaepernick to Receive Honorary Degree for ‘Kneeling for the Voiceless’

One million COVID-19 deaths is a searing indictment of inequality in America | Opinion
The U.S. has now reached the once unthinkable toll of 1 million deaths from COVID-19 . How could this happen in the wealthiest country in the world? In a word, because of poverty—and the policy choices that perpetuate it. Our task now is to make different choices. Americans across the country have suffered during this pandemic. But new research by the Poor People's Campaign strongly suggests the poor and low-income have suffered the most. Even controlling for vaccination rates, they found that COVID-19 death rates in poorer U.S. counties were nearly double those in wealthier counties. During the deadliest phases of the pandemic, it rose to five times as many. White Americans still make up the largest share of America's poor and those who've died from COVID-19. But Black, Hispanic and Indigenous Americans are significantly overrepresented in America's poorest counties, and COVID-19 casualty rates run significantly higher for many communities of color. Poor Americans are … [Read more...] about One million COVID-19 deaths is a searing indictment of inequality in America | Opinion

Soccer-Liverpool take title race down to the wire with win at Southampton
SOUTHAMPTON, England (Reuters) -Joel Matip's stooping header gave Liverpool a 2-1 win at Southampton on Tuesday to keep the Premier League title race alive until the final day of the season. The result leaves Liverpool a point behind leaders Manchester City ahead of Sunday's final round of games when City are at home to Aston Villa and Liverpool host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield. City have 90 points with Liverpool on 89, meaning that victory for Pep Guardiola's side against Villa, managed by former Reds captain Steven Gerrard, would secure their fourth league title in five seasons. Juergen Klopp changed nine of the team who beat Chelsea on penalties in the FA Cup final on Saturday with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah injured but several others rested. Klopp's choice was looking questionable when Southampton took a 13th-minute lead through a wonderful Nathan Redmond strike after the winger had cut in from the left flank. Roberto Firmino, who led the line in the absence … [Read more...] about Soccer-Liverpool take title race down to the wire with win at Southampton
Amar’e Stoudemire clarifies comments on Kyrie Irving and leaving the Nets
Former Nets assistant Amar’e Stoudemire suggested there’s no bad blood between him, the Nets or Kyrie Irving, and that the media took his words in an appearance on ESPN’s First Take out of context. Stoudemire, who broke the news of his departure from Steve Nash’s coaching staff in a May 12 nationally-televised conversation with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, posted a video with a caption that categorized the media as “misinformed” on Wednesday for the widespread reporting that he quit on the Nets after two failed seasons in Brooklyn without an NBA title – or a trip beyond the second round of the playoffs. “I want to clarify something: I’m seeing articles right now popping up saying ‘Amar’e quits the Nets and criticized Kyrie on his way out,’” the former Phoenix Suns All-Star forward said in the video. “That’s not the case.” In his discussion on ESPN, Stoudemire also admitted Irving’s decision not to get vaccinated against COVID-19 played a role in the Nets’ early season struggles that … [Read more...] about Amar’e Stoudemire clarifies comments on Kyrie Irving and leaving the Nets
Buffalo is latest mass shooting by gunman wearing body armor
When a shooter attacked a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, over the weekend, its security guard tried to stop him. At least one of his shots hit the gunman, but it didn’t stop the deadly rampage because the gunman was wearing body armor. Ten Black people died in the racist massacre, including security guard Aaron Salter, a retired Buffalo police officer hailed as a hero. It’s the latest mass shooting in which the gunman apparently came prepared for anyone trying to stop him with a gun. At least 21 mass shooters over the last four decades have worn some kind of body armor — and the majority of those were within the last 10 years, according to a database maintained by The Violence Project, a nonpartisan research group that tracks gun violence. Among them: A massacre that killed 12 people and injured dozens more at a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, in 2012, and another in nearby Boulder that left 10 people dead at a supermarket last year. The shooter in Texas’s deadliest … [Read more...] about Buffalo is latest mass shooting by gunman wearing body armor

North crows about hypersonic ‘glide vehicle’
North Korea successfully tested a hypersonic missile at daybreak Tuesday from Jagang Province, according to its official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) Wednesday. [KCNA] North Korea said it successfully conducted a "final" test of a new hypersonic glide vehicle under the watch of leader Kim Jong-un, his first attendance of a launch in nearly two years. The test Tuesday morning was "aimed at the final verification of overall technical specifications of the developed hypersonic weapon system," reported the North's official Rodong Sinmun and the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Wednesday. After its release from a missile, the hypersonic vehicle made a "glide jump flight" from 600 kilometers, followed by 240 kilometers of "corkscrew maneuvering" before "hitting the set target" in waters 1,000 kilometers away, according to KCNA, a longer range than estimated by South Korea's military a day earlier. This was the first time Kim personally supervised a missile launch in 661 … [Read more...] about North crows about hypersonic ‘glide vehicle’
‘Buffalo killer was motivated by murderous prejudice of extreme far right’
The US white supremacist who shot dead 10 people and called for London Mayor Sadiq Khan to be killed is a terrorist using the internet for an international platform. Deranged, bigoted teenager Payton Gendron’s racist killing spree in Buffalo, New York state was motivated by the murderous prejudice of the extremist far right. Calling for the killing of African American, Jews and Muslim Khan, one of three people labelled high profile enemies by Gendron, illustrates the global danger posed by fanatics. Ranting, unhinged Donald Trump regularly targeted London’s Mayor and it’s easy to guess why the racist then President picked out Khan. Gendron focusing on specific cases in Britain underlined both why we must discuss crimes here sensitively and why there are zealots around the world who exploit cases here for their own evil ends. Decent folk everywhere have lots in common. We must never let terrorists divide us. Shame on you Keir Starmer’s party is on the side of families … [Read more...] about ‘Buffalo killer was motivated by murderous prejudice of extreme far right’
