You might be surprised to hear this, but there is now more green cover on earth than it was, 20 years ago. This is according to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which says there are now more trees on earth in comparison with two decades ago. The NASA study also shows that it is China and India leading the way, with their ambitious tree plantation projects. On 5 July 2017, India planted as many as 66 million trees in one day, along the Narmada in the state of Madhya Pradesh, creating a new world record in the process. Before that, 800,000 volunteers in the state of Uttar Pradesh planted 50.4 million trees in just 24 hours. “China and India account for one-third of the greening, but contain only 9% of the planet’s land area covered in vegetation – a surprising finding, considering the general notion of land degradation in populous countries from overexploitation,” says Chi Chen of the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University, in Massachusetts, and … [Read more...] about The Earth is Greener Than it Was Two Decades Ago, And it is Because of India And China

Explained | What is the controversy around Odisha’s Jagannath temple Heritage Corridor Project?
The story so far: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said on Tuesday, May 17, that a sculpture of a lion , which possibly dates back to the Ganga dynasty, was found during excavation for the controversial heritage corridor project around the 12th century Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. This is the third such lion sculpture found during the excavation work. The East Ganga dynasty had ruled Kalinga, as Odisha was called in ancient times, from the early fifth century to the early 15th century. The Odisha government’s ambitious temple corridor project in Puri has become a subject of political controversy between Chief Minister Naveen Pattanaik’s Biju Janata Dal government and the opposition BJP and Congress. Three court proceedings are currently underway in the matter. On May 9, the ASI noted in a report submitted to the Orissa High Court that there was every possibility of archaeological remains at the heritage site being destroyed due to the excavation work for the … [Read more...] about Explained | What is the controversy around Odisha’s Jagannath temple Heritage Corridor Project?
Indians Fail to Impress at Athletics Meet in Kazakhstan
Discus thrower Navjeet Kaur Dhillon failed to impress, though she won a gold, in the Qosanov Memorial Athletics Meet here on Saturday, putting a question mark over her Commonwealth Games selection. Dhillon won the event with a best throw of 56.24m. She had won gold in the National Inter-State Championships (June 10-14) in Chennai with a best effort of 55.67m. Dhillon was included in the 36-member Indian athletics team on June 16, with the rider of “subject to guidelines achieved in Kazakhstan” against her name. The CWG qualifying guidelines prepared by Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is 58.00m for women’s discus throw. It is to be seen what the AFI will do in case of Dhillon, who had hurled the discus past the CWG qualifying standard with an effort of 58.03m while winning gold in the Indian Grand Prix in Bhubaneswar in May. The AFI had included five more athletes — high jumper Tejaswin Shankar, marathoners Srinu Bugatha and Anish Thapa, heptathlete Swapna Barman and … [Read more...] about Indians Fail to Impress at Athletics Meet in Kazakhstan

With new owners, Florida Project motel dwellers must leave
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Residents at a motel along a tourist strip not far from Walt Disney World that was used as the setting for the 2017 film “The Florida Project" were told that they must vacate on short notice because the complex has been sold to another owner. Residents of the Magic Castle Inn & Suites were told last Monday that the hotel had been purchased and the new owners were forcing everyone out, local media reported. Because the Magic Castle was a motel, the new owners don't have to follow the same eviction procedures that a landlord would for removing tenants from a rental apartment. “Now I have to find a home and a job,” Heather Squires, who paid for her room by working at the motel, told the Orlando Sentinel. “That’s a lot to dump on someone in less than 24 hours.” The lavender-painted hotel was the setting for the movie that, through the eyes of a young girl, told a story of poverty and resilience at the pay-by-the-week motel that was the home of last resort … [Read more...] about With new owners, Florida Project motel dwellers must leave

Boris Johnson ‘planned to build £150,000 treehouse for son Wilf’ at Chequers
Boris Johnson planned to build a £150,000 treehouse for his son Wilf at Chequers, it has been reported. The prime minister and his wife Carrie wanted to build the treehouse during autumn 2020 but had to pull the plug after it raised security concerns. The treehouse's design included bulletproof glass but could be seen by the roadside, prompting police to warn the PM about the risks involved. There were discussions about having Lord Brownlow, a Tory donor ranked the 521st richest person in the UK last year, fund the project, with plans for the treehouse drawn up for the country retreat, it has been reported. Some No10 aides warned Mr Johnson against the project due to the cost and the matter of it being more expensive than some homes in many parts of the UK. Prime Minister Boris Johnson with Carrie, their son Wilfred and dog Dilyn “He was told it would look terrible,” a government source told The Times . Largest ever snake weighing 98kg and reaching 18ft captured with 122 eggs in belly
A whopping 98kg python has been caught in Florida - believed to be the biggest in the state's history. Experts caught the 18-foot female in December 2021, after using a male like a "magnet" to track it down. The Burmese python was discovered in the Everglades, where biologists wrestled with it for 20 minutes. The snake was eventually captured and killed, before being put in a freezer for several months. It is estimated that she was up to 20 years old when caught, and was the approximate height of a giraffe if stretched out vertically. Pythons have become pests in Florida as invasive snakes with no major predators, out-competing native species. The beast was approximately the size of a giraffe if spread vertically ( Image: SWNS) Wildlife biologist Ian Bartoszek said: "This season we tracked a male scout snake to a region of the western Everglades that he frequented for several weeks. "We knew he was there for a reason, and the team found him with the … [Read more...] about Largest ever snake weighing 98kg and reaching 18ft captured with 122 eggs in belly
‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
Click here to read the full article. Does the phrase “That’s All Right, Mama” apply to the new “ Elvis ” movie… as in, “that’s all correct, ma’am”? No one is probably expecting that ; any practiced watcher of biopics knows virtually any example will take deep liberties with the facts for dramatic purposes. And maybe it’s a given that a director who puts hip-hop and hard rock on his period-film soundtracks, as Baz Luhrmann does, might favor effect over total verisimilitude. Still, “Elvis” is right on enough counts — literally or spiritually — that it’s worth trying to separate fact from fiction in the movie’s narrative of Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler) and his nearly career-long manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). There may be no one better to go to who can provide the truth on both Presley and “the Colonel,” in tandem, than the latter’s biographer, Alanna Nash. Nash, a veteran music journalist, published “The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel … [Read more...] about ‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
