By David Moye A newly released photo of U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin enjoying last August’s eclipse proves sunlight is the best disinfectant. The photo, just unearthed by ThinkProgress.org through a Freedom of Information Act request, shows Mnuchin and his wife, Louise Linton, viewing the eclipse with appropriate glasses and smiles on their faces. On Aug. 21, the day of the eclipse, the couple flew to Fort Knox in Kentucky on a government plane. Since the gold fortress just happened to be near the path of totality, an ethics watchdog group asked whether the couple planned a personal trip funded by taxpayers to see the eclipse. Mnuchin, a multimillionaire and former Goldman Sachs executive, insisted that his trip to Fort Knox was not connected with the total … [Read more...] about Steven Mnuchin Sure Seemed To Enjoy The Eclipse He Claimed Not To Care About

The eclipse should be visible throughout the UK and Ireland, unless obscured by thunderstorms. The Met Office has issued a thunderstorm warning from Friday afternoon that is expected to last until midnight, with a “potential for showers to develop across the eastern half of the UK”, according to spokesman Grahame Madge. But for those blessed with clear skies, Ashley King, a planetary scientist based at the Natural History Museum, says: “The general advice is get as high above buildings as you can and minimise the light in your vicinity.” We’ve lined up a few sites across the UK and Ireland that have been awarded “dark sky status” by the International Dark-Sky … [Read more...] about 12 of the best places to see the ‘blood moon’ eclipse in the UK and Ireland
Thunderstorms prevent skygazers from seeing ‘blood moon’ eclipse
News / UK and world by Press Association July 27, 2018, 10:27 pm FacebookTwitterLinkedInWhatsAppEmail Sign up to our Daily newsletter Skygazers looking out for the rare “blood moon” lunar eclipse were left disappointed as clouds largely obscured the celestial phenomenon. After weeks of uninterrupted sunshine and cloudless skies, thunderstorms swept across swathes of the UK on Friday, veiling what was said to be the longest celestial event in the 21st century. Groups of hopefuls camped out on Primrose Hill were treated to dark skies with the only light coming from London’s skyline. The lunar eclipse, which was estimated to last around 103 minutes, saw the “total” phase end at around 10.13pm, with the moon passing through the Earth’s darkest shadow and take on a red sheen. But a blanket of grey spoiled any chance of a glimpse for people in Hampshire and Wiltshire in the south and south west, to Hull in east Yorkshire, Liverpool in … [Read more...] about Thunderstorms prevent skygazers from seeing ‘blood moon’ eclipse
Lunar eclipse ‘Blood Moon’ coming soon and is last one until 2021
Total lunar eclipses are fairly common but the one scheduled on January 20 and 21 will be made all the more spectacular as it will be the last one in more than a year, NASA has revealed. What is a lunar eclipse? A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes completely behind Earth and into its shadow. It happens when the sun, Earth and the moon are perfectly aligned with our planet in the middle, thus blocking sunlight from reaching the moon. The light then appears reddish, hence the "blood moon" name. Luna eclipses only take place when the moon is full. Why is the one special? Total lunar eclipses usually happen at least once a year but the one on January 20 will be the last one to occur until May 2021. Another element setting it apart is that the moon will be at its closest point to Earth in its orbit — called perigee — meaning the moon will appear slightly bigger and brighter in our night sky. That's what we call a "supermoon." For the Americas, this total lunar … [Read more...] about Lunar eclipse ‘Blood Moon’ coming soon and is last one until 2021
‘Super blood wolf moon’: the best images as total lunar eclipse wows skygazers
Stargazers were out in force across the world on Monday to try and catch a glimpse of a total lunar eclipse. Although it is a total eclipse, the moon will never go completely dark but rather take on a coppery red glow, a blood moon. It is also a full moon that is especially close to Earth, called a supermoon. Unlike a solar eclipse, which requires eye protection to safely enjoy the view, no extra measures need to be taken for hazard-free lunar eclipse watching. … [Read more...] about ‘Super blood wolf moon’: the best images as total lunar eclipse wows skygazers
