What’s Really Behind Rural Resentment?

February 5, 2023 by www.nytimes.com

More from our inbox: Lead in Baby Food ChatGPT, the Politician Send Legal Migrants to All the States How to Invest (Not in Crypto) To the Editor: Re “ Can Anything Be Done to Assuage Rural Rage? ,” by Paul Krugman (column, Jan. 27): Mr. Krugman’s piece on rural resentment illustrates, in its inadvertent condescension, the very reasons rural people resent big-city elites. Mr. Krugman details the reasons rural complaints about big government are wrong, noting, for example, that much more federal assistance and more investment funds go to many rural areas than come in through taxes. This misses the deeper issue: Human beings need to be needed, to feel that the work they do matters to the larger community. For decades now the jobs that help men to feel they are contributing something essential, such as coal mining, manufacturing and farming, have been disappearing. We’ve created an economy that cuts off access to meaningful work, and then told … [Read more...] about What’s Really Behind Rural Resentment?

IT WOULD BE THE LAST TIME THE WHOLE family was together - Christmas 1979. In the Tudor stone mansion across the street from the Wichita Country Club, Mary Koch and her four sons celebrated the holiday in the spacious living room, scattered with photographs of the brothers as carefree boys. Dancing On Ice’s Joey Essex gushes over Vanessa but feels ‘underestimated’

January 27, 2023 by www.mirror.co.uk

She might not seem quite so imposing, but Joey Essex says being trained by his pint-sized figure skater partner is as tough as going toe-to-toe with a bunch of former special forces soldiers. The reality star survived two weeks being beasted on Channel 4 's SAS: Who Dares Wins and even made it through to the interrogation stage of the gruelling course. But it seems his time in the trenches was the perfect preparation for his latest adventure on Dancing On Ice. He has been paired with German skating champion Vanessa Bauer and Joey says she is proving just as tough as SAS hunk Jason Fox and his pals. "Vanessa really whips me into shape!" he says, speaking ahead of his second outing on ITV 's skating series tomorrow. "It's a similar process to SAS: Who Dares Wins, because you’ve got to listen. You’ve got to really focus. "The more you focus and the more you listen, the more you're going to go further in this journey. It really matters. Jason Miyares Looks to Unseat Left-Wing Prosecutors Across the Country

February 5, 2023 by www.breitbart.com

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares (R) is targeting left-wing prosecutors who “really view themselves as social workers” in the 2023 election cycle. Miyares joined Breitbart News Saturday, telling host Matthew Boyle his effort — the Protect Americans Action Fund — will be a paradigm shift in how conservatives view local prosecutor elections. “Candidly, conservatives are kind of asleep at the switch,” the Virginia Republican said. “You have these large, left-wing special interest groups that realized, ‘Hey, we don’t have to change the change laws, we don’t necessarily need to win governors mansions or state legislatures, we can win these local prosecutors, these district attorneys races.'” “I say it’s the most important election that people rarely pay attention to,” he concluded. Listen: “They don’t have to change the laws in their state capital, they just decide not to enforce entire categories of law,” Miyares explained. “So, you see in places like New York and … [Read more...] about Jason Miyares Looks to Unseat Left-Wing Prosecutors Across the Country

Silent Suffering

February 5, 2023 by www.nytimes.com

Menopause, for many women, is an unknown — a confusing tunnel to pass through, with limited signage for what to expect. But one effective treatment has been overlooked for decades, signaling that women’s suffering is widely regarded as unimportant, according to the cover story in today’s New York Times Magazine. I spoke with Susan Dominus, who wrote the article, about her reporting and the reactions it has received from women. Lauren: I learned more from your story than I’ve ever learned about menopause. It has been so absent from public discourse. Susan: I too knew almost nothing going into this. I told a friend I was working on a story about menopause. Her eyes went wide and she just said, “Thank you.” And I could tell that what she meant by that was: That’s good, because I know nothing. After I got up to speed, I was constantly bringing the subject up at dinner parties, asking my friends, “Hey, how is your menopause going?” You’d think that would be really … [Read more...] about Silent Suffering

Argentina wins World Cup on penalty kicks over France

December 18, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

A World Cup final for the ages delivered a crowning glory for soccer icon Lionel Messi on Sunday as Argentina beat reigning men's champion France on penalty kicks. One of the most dramatic major sporting events in history had the teams tied 3-3 after extra time, with the French ultimately missing twice in the shootout before Gonzalo Montiel converted to seal an exhausting and emotional victory. Argentina had dominated the bulk of the match, leading 2-0 with just about 10 minutes to go, but France burst into life with star forward Kylian Mbappé scoring twice in as many minutes. Both sides traded missed chances and then late goals again in the 30 minutes of extra time before the tension of penalty kicks. The game capped a month of sporting drama and geopolitical controversy in Qatar. The tournament featured surprise results and fairy-tale runs , but the final had two giants of the game compete for the title — headlined by a pair of stars. The speedy and skillful Mbappé … [Read more...] about Argentina wins World Cup on penalty kicks over France

He had one of the most unusual jobs in Yosemite. After 44 years, he’s retiring.

February 5, 2023 by www.sfgate.com

John Reynolds might have just left the most interesting job you’ve never heard of. The now-former Yosemite National Park postmaster battled record-setting floods, devastating wildfires and sometimes deadly rockslides to deliver the mail across a park that’s roughly the size of Delaware. Sure, national parks have their share of interesting and unique occupations, but none of those professionals can claim a national park is where they were born and raised, worked and retired. Reynolds can. "We were all smiles," he told SFGATE of his Jan. 31 retirement. "It’s surreal. You only retire once." The 63-year-old was born at Yosemite Medical Clinic in Yosemite Valley, back when the facility was still delivering babies in 1959. Nowadays, anyone living in or near Yosemite must "drive like hell" to Fresno when a baby is on the way, as Reynolds fondly recalled of when all three of his children were born. With credit to his mom’s job of 43 years at — you guessed it — Yosemite’s post … [Read more...] about He had one of the most unusual jobs in Yosemite. After 44 years, he’s retiring.

Man sets up UK’s first Food Bank Day as demand soars – how to help out

November 29, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

The cost of living crisis inspired one man to set up the UK's first Food Bank Day to help raise support and ensure no-one has to go hungry. More and more Brits are turning to food banks as they are unable to afford to eat - and in some areas 40% are children. Now Simon Baum, 43, has organised the UK's first Food Bank Day, which takes place on November 30. "The aim of Food Bank Day is to give a big boost to food banks in the run-up to what will probably be their busiest-ever Winter", Baum said. Essex-based Baum, a musician and recruitment agency boss, said he got the idea for Food Bank Day after one of his friends fell into financial difficulty and began using a food bank. "One of my friends, he stopped coming on nights out and became withdrawn," Baum explained. Simon Baum is launching Food Bank Day on November 30 ( Image: Simon Baum) "I called him and he said he had been struggling. He'd had to take a demotion at work, and had started a second job. … [Read more...] about Man sets up UK’s first Food Bank Day as demand soars – how to help out

AP source: Kyrie Irving going to the Dallas Mavericks

February 6, 2023 by www.denverpost.com

By SCHUYLER DIXON DALLAS (AP) — Kyrie Irving is getting his wish. He’s getting traded. And Luka Doncic is getting another All-Star to help him in Dallas. The Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets agreed Sunday on a blockbuster trade: Irving — the super-talented and often-enigmatic eight-time All-Star point guard — heads to Dallas, ending the pairing with Kevin Durant that never really had a chance to click. The Nets bring Spencer Dinwiddie back to Brooklyn along with Dorian Finney-Smith and a package of draft picks, according to a person familiar with the terms of the deal who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because it had not been finalized. Dallas also gets Markieff Morris. The Athletic and ESPN first reported the trade agreement. It will become complete once the teams have a call with the NBA, which is standard for all trades. The move comes just two days after Irving told the Nets that he wanted to be traded by Thursday’s league deadline, after talks … [Read more...] about AP source: Kyrie Irving going to the Dallas Mavericks
