The other day, my friend answered a call to her mobile phone and received a nasty shock. “Hello,” said the voice on the other end. “I’m calling from HMRC. There have been indications that you have committed tax fraud between 2012 and 2017. You owe more than £6,000.”My friend was more than slightly concerned. Which con artist or telemarketer will it be this time — a phony IRS agent demanding payment for back taxes, someone babbling threats in Mandarin or a guy offering a “free’’ resort vacation? It’s no wonder the Fremont resident is leery of picking up the phone. In May alone, swindlers and legitimate businesses bombarded Americans with a record 130 million intrusive automated messages — per day — according to YouMail, a robocall blocking service that collects and analyzes data. France gives green light to mobile phone ban in schools
The issue has tapped into the anxiety among many parents over how to limit their children's screen time, especially in the wake of revelations about invasions of online privacy by technology companies. Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer called it "a law for the 21st century, a law for addressing the digital revolution." "It's a signal to French society of the stakes for our society," he said in parliament. "Being open to technologies of the future doesn't mean we have to accept all their uses."
