Brit safari park owner savaged by lion faces ‘long road’ to recovery
A BRITISH man who opened his own safari park in South Africa and hand-reared a lion which would eventually maul him faces a long road to recovery. Mike Hodge, 72, from Wilmslow in Cheshire, moved from the UK with his wife Chrissy and her daughter Emma in 1999. Mike hand-reared the male lion named Shamba from a cub before the animal mauled him on Saturday. He is currently “recovering well” in a Johannesburg hospital after suffering a “broken jaw and several lacerations.” A family friend said: "Mike should recover fully but it is a long road ahead as his injuries are extensive." He said he is “devastated” that the animal was shot and killed during the incident over the weekend. The Brits started their own lion project in 2003 before opening the Marakele Animal Sanctuary in Thabaziambi in December 2010. Following the success of the park, the three Brits created the Predator Centre within the sanctuary which would include at least a dozen big cats. … [Read more...] about Brit safari park owner savaged by lion faces ‘long road’ to recovery
