New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party will revive a plan to build secured camps to resettle scores of Hindus in the Kashmir Valley, senior leader Ram Madhav said, a proposal that would almost certainly heighten tensions in the restive region. Madhav, who is the BJP national general secretary responsible for Kashmir, said his party was committed to helping bring back some of the estimated 200,000-300,000 Hindus who fled the Jammu and Kashmir in the aftermath of an armed revolt that began in 1989. "Their fundamental rights of returning to the valley have to be respected. At the same time, we have to provide them proper security," Madhav said in an interview, referring to the Kashmiri Pandits. Nearly 7 million people live in the Kashmir Valley, 97% of them Muslim, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of troops and armed police deployed. About 50,000 people have been killed in the conflict in the last three decades, according to official figures. Madhav said that a previous … [Read more...] about BJP Will Revive Plan for ‘Secured Camps’ In Kashmir to Resettle Pandits, Says Ram Madhav

Five poor families win 46-year-old legal battle
Coming to the rescue of five poor families belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes, the High Court of Karnataka has ordered restoration of lands, granted about 50 years ago, in favour of legal heirs of original grantees. The court quashed the orders passed by the land tribunal and the revenue authorities, which had vested these lands in favour of two affluent persons on their claims based on tenancy/occupancy rights. This is a classic case of how grant made by the sovereign power in favour of persons belonging to the depressed classes are being cornered and usurped by the rich and the influential, the court observed. Justice R. Devdas passed the order while allowing the petitions filed by the legal heirs of five original grantees from Devanahalli taluk in Bengaluru Rural district. The dispute was over four acres each of land granted to five persons in 1972 by the Deputy Commissioner under the Karnataka Land Grant Rules, 1969. The dispute arose way back in 1976 … [Read more...] about Five poor families win 46-year-old legal battle

The very last bill to be voted on in Colorado’s 2022 legislative session was designed to make sure the state never lets another child experience what Lorenzo Montoyawent through. Montoya was 14 years old in 2000 when he was taken into questioning by Denver police detectives who suspected him in the killing of a Skinner Middle School teacher named Emily Johnson. He didn’t kill her . Again and again, that’s what he told detectives. But over a period of hours, first with Montoya’s mom present and later alone with the child, the police planted a narrative in the child’s mind. They claimed they’d already retrieved fingerprints, shoe prints and hair samples to back it up. Confused and under enormous pressure, Montoya relented and gave a coerced confession. He was convicted of murder and spent the rest of his childhood and most of his 20s incarcerated, before being exonerated in 2014. Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access
One day after the draft Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe vs. Wade leaked, Pennsylvania Democrat Josh Shapiro declared that his bid to become governor was the only thing preventing Republicans from restricting abortion access in the state. “The next governor is going to have a bill on their desk that will restrict or outlaw abortion rights, and they will have a decision as to whether to sign it or veto it,” he told reporters this month. “I will, of course, veto it. My opponents would sign it.” If the landmark 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision guaranteeing protection of abortion rights is overturned, abortion policy will be set by states, where Republicans hold the majority of legislatures and governorships. But in a handful of states, particularly Pennsylvania and Kansas, the winner of the November gubernatorial races could have a significant impact, vetoing or signing into law abortion legislation that would affect millions of people of reproductive age both in their … [Read more...] about Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access

Not only did Prime Minister Narendra Modi send out an early tweet on Emergency but also dwelt at length on the subject during an official function, where he recalled the “darkest days” of Indian democracy when “the nation was bound with chains and turned into a jail due to one person’s lust for power”. He said the memorial being built to Jayaprakash Narayan, who led the Total Revolution movement, will be a guiding light and ode to democracy. BJP president Amit Shah presided over a function on the Emergency organised by Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation, which was attended by several party workers and leaders who had been jailed during the period. Those present included senior Delhi BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra and party office-bearers Ram Lal and Shyam … [Read more...] about BJP uses Emergency to target Congress

*** Election Night Livewire *** Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, Idaho, Oregon Vote in Contentious Primaries
Voters in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, Idaho, and Oregon all head to the polls Tuesday to select their nominees in both GOP and Democrat primaries in what is thus far this year perhaps the biggest election night yet. Center-stage is Pennsylvania’s GOP U.S. Senate primary, where celebrity Dr. Mehmet Oz – with former President Donald Trump’s endorsement – aims to secure the nomination and advance to the general election. Both Oz and businessman David McCormick, who despite his Wall Street history has run one of the most America First campaigns this cycle, have spent north of eight figures bashing each other to smithereens in a brutal ad campaign. Kathy Barnette, the author and conservative commentator whose powerful personal story has captivated voters, has surged into the top tier in the final weeks of the campaign, giving both of the big spenders a run for their money. Who wins between Oz, McCormick, and Barnette, will have major implications for the future of the GOP, … [Read more...] about *** Election Night Livewire *** Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, Idaho, Oregon Vote in Contentious Primaries
