Tens of thousands of people are to rally on the streets of London to demand greater funding for the NHS ahead of its 70th birthday. The new US embassy is close to the River Thames in Nine Elms, South West London. It is near Battersea Power Station and New Covent Garden flower market, outside central London in the borough of Wandsworth. The $1billion construction was funded by the sale of other properties in London including the old embassy building in Mayfair. It is a veritable fortress set back at least 100ft from surrounding buildings - mostly newly erected high-rise residential blocks - and incorporates living quarters for the US Marines permanently stationed inside. Chanting slogans for change and waving flags, supporters of Khan and his Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf party filled a park in the power base of his rival and former Pakistan premier Nawaz Sharif, who was disqualified last July by the Supreme Court for concealing his assets abroad. Khan’s party managed the impressive show as its supporters travelled to the city from across the country. Khan’s opposition PTI has emerged as one of the leading parties in recent years, promising change.
