The typhoon is heading towards the East Sea. Due to the typhoon, torrential rain is forecast for northern and north-central regions from midnight on Wednesday through to Friday. Rainfall is predicted to rise to 350mm, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting. At the same time, thunderstorms will hit areas around the Bắc Bộ (Tonkin) Gulf and seas from Bình Thuận Province to Cà Mau Province as well as from Cà Mau Province to Kiên Giang Province. A relatively cool and rainy weekend is forecast for the entire country after a storm system did not have the impact previously expected. Forecasts of a storm, designated the name Johanne, have been retracted, meteorologist Trine Pedersen of DMI said on Friday morning. “There will not be a storm,” Pedersen said. “But we still expect it to be windy today. The west coast can expect strong winds with gusts reaching gale force. The same applies to the Lillebælt area,” she added. The rain in the beginning of the afternoon was not enough to calm down the heat. The base temperature in Hà Nội remains at 37 degrees Celsius. According to the NCHMF, late this afternoon, the northern province and north central province of Thanh Hóa will be showered with heavy rain, along with strong winds and the chance of tornado, flash flooding and landslides. The death toll from floods and landslides in Vietnam rose to 15 on Tuesday with authorities warning the toll could go higher with more torrential rains forecast for the worst hit province in the mountainous north. Lai Chau province, 470km northwest of Hanoi, has been the worst hit with at least 12 people, including two children, killed, said Le Trong Quang, Deputy Chairman of the province's People's Committee. Most of the victims drowned or were buried in landslides, triggered by heavy rains since Saturday, Quang told Reuters. "We are bracing for more rains in the coming days and I fear that the death toll in the province will continue to climb as 11 people remain missing," Quang said. Vietnam is prone to natural disasters, with floods and typhoons killing hundreds of people each year. HONOLULU (AP) — Kauai residents struggling with the aftermath of torrential rains are bracing for the possibility of more flooding.The National Weather Service says a flash flood watch is in effect for the Hawaiian island starting Thursday.Mayor Bernard Carvalho says officials will be keeping a close eye on the weather.At least 2 feet (71 centimeters) of rain dumped on Hanalei on Kauai's north shore during a 24-hour period over the weekend.
