9 More than 1,000 workers at two CNH Industrial plants went on strike Monday in search of a better deal with the company that makes agriculture and construction equipment. The United Auto Workers union said the workers in Racine, Wisconsin, and Burlington, Iowa, went on strike at noon after contract talks faltered. The action follows a spate of strikes in the past year, including a high-profile monthlong strike at Deere & Co. that resulted in 10% raises and improved benefits for 10,000 UAW workers at that equipment maker. “Our members at CNHi strike for the ability to earn a decent living, retire with dignity and establish fair work rules,” said Chuck Browning, vice president and director of the union's Agricultural Implement Department. The company, which is based in the United Kingdom, said in a statement that it is disappointed it couldn't reach an agreement with the union, and it remains committed to … [Read more...] about 1,000 CNH Industrial workers strike in Iowa, Wisconsin

U.S. judge upholds legality of charging D.C. gun cases in federal court
WASHINGTON - A federal judge on Monday upheld the legality of a Trump-era policy of charging certain gun crimes in federal court, saying it did not violate the District's Home Rule Act or the authority of D.C. Superior Court. Two District of Columbia men convicted under the "felon-in-possession" initiative had challenged the policy, which was announced in 2019, arguing that federal prosecutors had usurped D.C. authorities' power to enforce similar local laws by "categorically" prosecuting certain charges federally. Their stance won support from nearly 90 former federal prosecutors who asked Attorney General Merrick Garland and the U.S. attorney in Washington to abandon the policy amid concerns about long prison sentences that disproportionately affect Black residents. In a 62-page opinion, U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan disagreed, faulting prosecutors' treatment of some defendants but finding that "the FIP Policy does not 'nullify' the D.C. DC reaches $750K settlement in Trump inaugural lawsuit
By MICHAEL BALSAMO WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump’s businesses and inaugural committee have reached a deal to pay Washington, D.C., $750,000 to resolve a lawsuit that alleged the committee overpaid for events at his hotel and enriched the former president’s family in the process, according to the District of Columbia’s attorney general. Attorney General Karl Racine announced the settlement agreement in the case against the Presidential Inaugural Committee, the Trump Organization and the Trump International Hotel in Washington in a tweet on Tuesday. The document had not yet been signed by a judge. The agreement says the case is being resolved “to avoid the cost, burden, and risks of further litigation” and that the organizations “dispute these allegations on numerous grounds and deny having engaged in any wrongdoing or unlawful conduct.” As part of the agreement, the defendants will pay the District of Columbia a total of $750,000, which will be used to … [Read more...] about DC reaches $750K settlement in Trump inaugural lawsuit
Trump hotel out of Business as video shows signs stripped from building
Videos have emerged of the Trump name being removed from the former president's flagship hotel in Washington D.C. after the property was sold off to an investment firm. The Trump International Hotel, located just a short distance from the White House, is to be converted to a Waldorf Astoria after the Trump Organization agreed to sell the lease on the Old Post Office building to CGI Merchant Group for a reported $375 million. Trump's name was always planned to be removed from the hotel once the takeover was complete. A number of videos posted on social media by New York Times reporter Eric Lipton show workers slowly dismantling the signs bearing Trump's name from the front of the hotel ahead of the change of management. In a statement, the Trump Organization said that the "record breaking" sale of the Trump International Hotel is the highest price per room ever achieved in Washington D.C., the highest price per room in U.S. history for a leasehold interest, and the largest … [Read more...] about Trump hotel out of Business as video shows signs stripped from building
