Tory MP’s housekeeper says she was treated like a SLAVE and took legal action to get paid
A Tory MP’s housekeeper today says she was treated like a slave, suffered insults, was reduced to tears and had to take legal action against the politician’s wife to get paid. Hazel Settas was given rigid instructions on answering the phone within four rings, how long to run the tap – and even how to arrange avocados in the fruit bowl. She says she “worked like a dog” for ex-justice minister Jonathan Djanogly and wife Rebecca. The live-in housekeeper was on duty from 7am to 7pm – but sometimes worked to 11pm. But Hazel, 32, claims Mr Djanogly, 57 – MP for Huntingdon, Cambs, from a family worth £300million – looked down on her as “not even a human”. And his wife, claims Hazel, allegedly said: “My husband’s an MP, you’re worthless.” Hazel Settas said she was reduced to tears and 'worked like a dog' ( Image: TIM ANDERSON) Hazel is one of two women who successfully took Mrs Djanogly – under her maiden name of Silk – to court for pay due to them. The Diabetes-Cancer Connection: Understanding the Risk Factors
The ailment that people are most afraid of worldwide is still cancer. 9.6 million people, or one in six individuals worldwide, died from it in 2018 as per a WHO report. In the meantime, diabetes (high blood sugar), if untreated, can have a catastrophic effect on our heart, kidneys, and other organs. Despite the lack of a definite direct relationship between high blood sugar and cancer, people living with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) are likely to have a significantly increased risk of some types of cancer like cancers related to pancreas, liver, gut, breast and endometrium. It’s important to be mindful of the connection between type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and cancer to ensure prompt screening and early diagnosis for better outcomes in people with T2DM. Given the probable link between diabetes and cancer, it is important to understand potential mechanisms, especially in T2DM, responsible for this increased predisposition to certain cancers. Dr. Pratap Jetwani, Joint Secretary and Dr. … [Read more...] about The Diabetes-Cancer Connection: Understanding the Risk Factors
On North Carolina’s Supreme Court, G.O.P. Justices Move to Reconsider Democratic Rulings
WASHINGTON — An extraordinary pair of orders by North Carolina’s Republican-controlled Supreme Court is highlighting how the partisan tug of war has pervaded the state’s courts and, by extension, the nation’s. On Friday, the court moved to rehear two major voting rights cases that it had previously decided, one striking down a gerrymandered map of State Senate districts and another nullifying new voter identification requirements . Such rehearings by the court are exceedingly rare. In fact, North Carolina’s Supreme Court ordered as many rehearings on Friday as it has in the past three decades. What also made the rehearings exceptional was that the cases had been decided less than two months ago — by a court that, at the time, contained four Democratic and three Republican justices. The court that voted to rehear the cases has a 5-to-2 Republican majority, courtesy of the party’s sweep of state Supreme Court races in November. And the potential beneficiary of those reviews … [Read more...] about On North Carolina’s Supreme Court, G.O.P. Justices Move to Reconsider Democratic Rulings
Officials tell people to stay away from Ohio town where train derailed
Authorities on Sunday urged people to stay away from a northeastern Ohio town where a train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed two days earlier, causing an explosion that shot flames into the air. A state of emergency order will remain in place until at least Monday evening, East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway said at a Sunday news conference. On Saturday, Conaway ordered 1,500 residents within a one-mile radius of the derailment to evacuate his town near the Pennsylvania border. On Sunday, he said they and others should continue to avoid the area. "I can't stress enough that if you're in the evacuation zone, you need to leave," Conaway said at the news conference Sunday, adding that those who had stayed should shelter in place. "Please stay away from East Palestine," Conaway said. "Please stay away from the wreck. I don't want to say it's a dangerous situation, but it is still a very volatile situation." The hazardous chemicals posed a threat for emergency responders, … [Read more...] about Officials tell people to stay away from Ohio town where train derailed

Congress Moves to Narrow Cocaine Sentencing Disparities
The House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday that would reduce the disparities between mandatory federal sentences for crack and powder cocaine violations, a step toward ending what legal experts say have been unfairly harsh punishments imposed mainly on blacks. The bill, which passed the Senate in March, was adopted by the House in a voice vote and now goes to President Obama for his signature. Administration officials have described the sentencing disparity as “fundamentally unfair,” and Mr. Obama said during the 2008 presidential campaign that it “disproportionately filled our prisons with young black and Latino drug users.” Under the current law, adopted in 1986 after a surge in crack cocaine smoking and drug-related killings, someone convicted in federal court of possession of five grams of crack must be sentenced to at least five years in prison, and possession of 10 grams requires a 10-year minimum sentence. With powder cocaine, the threshold amounts for those … [Read more...] about Congress Moves to Narrow Cocaine Sentencing Disparities
