Privacy advocates and abortion rights activists fear that law enforcement could use pregnant people’s health information, including data collected by period tracking apps, against them in court after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe vs Wade ruling. In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision , many privacy advocates and experts have encouraged individuals using menstrual tracking apps to delete them so that they are not charged with crimes, should they opt for an abortion. With the Supreme Court overturning the 50-year-old Roe vs Wade judgment, states across the country now have the power to ban abortions , affecting millions of American patients. ‘I am not a murderer,’ Paris attacks defendant maintains
PARIS (AP) — The only surviving suspected member of the Islamic State attack team that terrorized Paris in 2015 pleaded for leniency during his final appearance in court on Monday, acknowledging he had “made mistakes," but declaring: "I'm not a murderer.” Salah Abdeslam is a leading suspect in France's worst peacetime attacks of Nov. 13, 2015, that killed 130 people. He is on trial with 19 other men on suspicion of playing critical roles in the Islamic State's massacres in a Paris music hall, cafes and the national stadium that Friday night. In closing arguments earlier this month, French prosecutors demanded a life sentence without a possibility of parole for Abdeslam. They charged him with multiple counts of murder, complicity to murder, belonging to a terrorist organization and taking part in a conspiracy to commit murder and kidnapping as a member of a terrorist organization. A verdict in the historic trial is expected on Wednesday. Abdeslam apologized to the victims on … [Read more...] about ‘I am not a murderer,’ Paris attacks defendant maintains
Reports: Droves of NYC Prosecutors Resigning Due to Woke DAs, Reforms
Prosecutors in New York City are resigning in droves due to “soft-on-crime” policies set by woke city officials and aggressive reforms imposed by the state, the New York Post reported . The resignations began increasing sharply in January when Mayor Eric Adams (D) was sworn into office and several progressive district attorneys started their terms. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office has had 65 assistant district attorneys resign – around 12 percent of its total staff – since January, the Post reported. By March of this year, 44 assistant district attorneys had resigned, while only 97 quit throughout the entire year of 2021. It is not just the Manhattan borough that is seeing prosecutors leave en masse; the same trend is apparent in Brooklyn and the Bronx. The Brooklyn district attorney’s office has seen 67 prosecutors resign this year – about 13 percent of its total staff – while 94 prosecutors quit all of last year. In the Bronx, 59 prosecutors walked … [Read more...] about Reports: Droves of NYC Prosecutors Resigning Due to Woke DAs, Reforms

Fresh protests as new U.S. abortion reality takes shape
Abortion rights defenders fanned out across America on Saturday for the second day of protest against the Supreme Court's thunderbolt ruling , as state after conservative state moved swiftly to ban the procedure. The deeply polarized country grappled with a new level of division: between states that will now or soon deny the right to abortion , enshrined since 1973, and those that still allow it. Also Read Explained | How will the Roe v. Wade rollback impact women? A few thousand people thronged the streets on Saturday outside the fenced-off Supreme Court in Washington, in hot summer weather, carrying signs that read "War on women, who's next?" and "No uterus, No opinion." "What happened yesterday is indescribable and disgusting," said Mia Stagner, 19, a political science major in college. "Being forced to be a mother is not something any woman should have to do." Demonstrations also took place in Los Angeles, with dozens of smaller rallies from coast to … [Read more...] about Fresh protests as new U.S. abortion reality takes shape

Roe v. Wade abortion ruling: Questions and answers about the Supreme Court decision
The Supreme Court’s decision last week to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling , guaranteed a constitutional right to abortion, will have wide-ranging impacts. About half of states have either already banned abortion or indicated that they soon will, meaning millions of women will no longer have easy access to abortion services. Still, many things remain uncertain, including whether bans will stand up to legal challenges, whether access to abortion pills will become the next target and if the ban on abortion will lead to attacks on other constitutional rights like same-sex marriage. Here are answers to some pressing questions surrounding the Supreme Court’s decision. How did we get here? The Supreme Court agreed last year to consider Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization , the most serious challenge to Roe in decades. That case challenged a law in Mississippi that banned most abortions after 15 weeks. Who voted to overturn Roe? The court ruled 6-3 … [Read more...] about Roe v. Wade abortion ruling: Questions and answers about the Supreme Court decision
Campaign Finance Watchdog Lets Giuliani Pal Off the Hook After His Felony Conviction
Last October, a federal jury convicted Rudy Giuliani associate Lev Parnas on criminal campaign finance charges for concealing the source of a $325,000 contribution to a group backing then President Donald Trump. But seven months later, according to a decision that hasn’t yet been made public, the Federal Election Commission—the agency tasked with civil enforcement of campaign finance regulations—failed to muster enough votes to enforce the same law. The outcome was disclosed last week in an exhibit attached to a brief that Parnas’ attorney filed ahead of his client’s sentencing, scheduled for Wednesday. It’s the latest in a series of befuddling non-decisions from the notoriously sclerotic FEC, whose Republican commissioners have declined time and again to take action against accused violators, even in the face of evidence of wrongdoing . The irony wasn’t lost on Parnas’ defense counsel, Joe Bondy, who quoted from a letter of notice that the FEC sent his client informing … [Read more...] about Campaign Finance Watchdog Lets Giuliani Pal Off the Hook After His Felony Conviction
