Who doesn’t get a sweet tooth, at least once in awhile, for a sweet onion? That thick slice of Rockies-purple red onion on a burger at Coors Field? Sweets cooked slowly and forever into a jam-like confit, sweeter than any that regular onions could make? It’s well-nigh impossible to think of a cuisine anywhere that doesn’t use onions, but sweet onions are special. (They also are a wee percentage of the world crop.) Many sweets sell in Colorado, such as Washington’s Walla Walla, Hawaii’s Maui, that Rockies-purple Red Bermuda or even our own state’s Colorado Sweet, available here most years August through October. But close to half of all the sweet onions that cooks buy in the United States come from Vidalia, Ga., and carry that name. Discovered accidentally (and felicitously) in the 1930s during the Great Depression, a Vidalia sports a whopping 12 percent sugar content versus a normal onion’s 5 percent. Too, the low sulfur content of the soil around the town of Vidalia contributes … [Read more...] about From cucumber salad to confit, three recipes to make the most of sweet onions

Amber Heard’s reference to “bruise kit” makeup goes viral
Video footage of Amber Heard referring to her makeup palette during testimony as a "bruise kit"—before quickly correcting herself—has gone viral on TikTok. Heard, 36, returned to Virginia's Fairfax County Circuit Courthouse on Monday for her defamation trial with ex-husband Johnny Depp , who has sued her for saying she was a domestic abuse survivor in a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post . While Depp, 58, was not named in the article, the actor's lawyers have argued that it was obvious she was referring to him. Depp filed a $50 million lawsuit against Heard, who has responded by countersuing for $100 million for nuisance. As she returned to the stand, Heard emotionally alleged that she had been beaten by Depp during their ill-fated relationship, which ended in 2016. For his part, Depp had earlier testified that he, too, had been physically abused by his Rum Diary co-star Heard, who he accused of throwing a large bottle of vodka at him, resulting in injuries that … [Read more...] about Amber Heard’s reference to “bruise kit” makeup goes viral
Final odds as Kathy Barnette faces Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania primary
Celebrity heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz is still the favorite to win the Pennsylvania Senate Republican primary despite a significant surge from rival Kathy Barnette. Ahead of Tuesday's vote, the Donald Trump-endorsed Oz is the leading candidate in the polls and with bookmakers, with former hedge fund CEO David McCormick falling behind Barnette into third place. Trump had said Monday that he didn't believe that Barnette could win the general election against "Radical Left Democrats ." Oz's chances of winning have improved further compared to the odds provided on Thursday, May 12 , according to Betfair. The bookmaker has declared Oz the 2/9 favorite to win the GOP Senate candidacy in Pennsylvania, having been 8/11 the previous week. Betfair Exchange spokesperson Sam Rosbottom told Newsweek that Oz's chances have "massively improved over the last few days" even with the surge from Barnette. The latest odds now mean that Oz has a near 82 percent implied chance of victory … [Read more...] about Final odds as Kathy Barnette faces Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania primary
Internet backs lone diner taking up table as angry couple waiting “huffed”
The internet has sided with a woman who upset a couple in a restaurant by eating alone. On Monday, Reddit user Resturant_Conflicts shared the uncomfortable situation on the popular r/AmITheA**hole subreddit. "I have given up on dating but still enjoy date activities," said the 35-year-old: "So once a month I take myself out on a date. I go to the movies, museums and even mini-golf by myself. I always treat myself to a nice lunch or dinner around 3–4pm, after the lunch rush but before the dinner rush so I have plenty of time to enjoy my food." She explained that she always finds a new restaurant to try for her "self-dates," and on Saturday found a hidden Mediterranean place with great decor and music, and only around seven tables. "When I got there only one other table was occupied and I sat in the only two-seater table," she wrote: "The waiter got me my drink and I had just put in my order when a couple walked in. They looked around the small restaurant, saw me at the only … [Read more...] about Internet backs lone diner taking up table as angry couple waiting “huffed”
Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access
One day after the draft Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe vs. Wade leaked, Pennsylvania Democrat Josh Shapiro declared that his bid to become governor was the only thing preventing Republicans from restricting abortion access in the state. “The next governor is going to have a bill on their desk that will restrict or outlaw abortion rights, and they will have a decision as to whether to sign it or veto it,” he told reporters this month. “I will, of course, veto it. My opponents would sign it.” If the landmark 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision guaranteeing protection of abortion rights is overturned, abortion policy will be set by states, where Republicans hold the majority of legislatures and governorships. But in a handful of states, particularly Pennsylvania and Kansas, the winner of the November gubernatorial races could have a significant impact, vetoing or signing into law abortion legislation that would affect millions of people of reproductive age both in their … [Read more...] about Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access
Devasahayam Pillai: An anti-caste crusader who was canonised
For Devasahayam Pillai, recently canonised by Pope Francis , the enemy was caste. And finally, with the canonisation, he will be known as Martyr Saint Devasahayam and not by his caste honorific Pillai. For a man who served food for all communities together in a common dining room, this is conceivably a dream realised. Also Read Tamil Thai Vaazhthu echoes in Vatican; Stalin hails move “His name was Devasahayam, but people added the title Pillai because of the [Hindu] community in which he was born. The Vatican conducted an inquiry based on the request submitted by us and decided to drop the caste title,” said Fr. Kulandai, Vice-Postulator for the cause of canonisation. Born Neelakanta Pillai to Vasudevan Namboodhiri and a Nair mother Devaki Ammal, he became Devasahayam, the Tamil rendering of Lazuras as “God’s help.” He was referred to as Devasahayam Pillai when Pope Benedict XVI first made the announcement of his beatification on December 2, 2012. But the … [Read more...] about Devasahayam Pillai: An anti-caste crusader who was canonised

CBI raids wrong, party stands behind Chidambaram: Congress
The Congress Tuesday put its weight behind party leader P. Chidambaram, saying the CBI raids against him and his son in connection with an 11-year-old case are "wrong" and aimed at diverting attention from the key issues of inflation and unemployment. The party also said P. Chidambaram is a nationalist and patriot whose commitment to the country is beyond question. The CBI registered a fresh case against Lok Sabha MP Karti Chidambaram to probe the allegation of facilitating visas of 250 Chinese nationals in lieu of ₹50 lakh when his father P. Chidambaram was Union Home Minister. The agency also conducted coordinated searches at 10 locations in multiple cities including the Mr. Chidambarams’ residences in Chennai and Delhi. Senior Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken told reporters at a press conference here that the "raids were wrong". "The Congress party stands behind P. Chidambaram. An appeal has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court's split verdict on the issue of criminalisation of marital rape on a batch of petitions challenging the exception in the law that exempts husbands from being prosecuted for non-consensual sexual intercourse with their wives. The appeal has been filed by Khushboo Saifi, one of the petitioners before the high court. The high court on May 11 had delivered a split verdict on the issue.
