Majority of 40 new hospitals promised by Boris Johnson in 2019 unlikely to be finished by next general election
Eighty percent of the 40 new hospitals promised by the Conservatives in 2019 either do not have a completion date or are unlikely to be finished by the next general election, according to a Sky News investigation. The new hospitals' pledge, a key plank of Boris Johnson 's 2019 election manifesto, promised 40 new hospitals by the end of this decade. But a Sky News investigation, carried out over the course of the year, has revealed a programme under acute pressure. Seven of the 40 hospitals still do not have a completion date, with another 25 not expected to be finished until at least 2024, the year of the next general election, Freedom of Information requests submitted by Sky News revealed. South Asians from Oklahoma to London share how partition shaped their identities
Ankita Mukhopadhyay always knew there was pain in her grandfather’s past. As a kid, she didn’t understand the depth of it, but she heard his stories about 1947. Families pushed from the rooftops of houses, bodies in the street. Unable to return to his home in what is now Bangladesh after the partition, he carried a lifelong sadness with him that she couldn’t quite explain. “I used to send him letters in English. He used to tear apart my letters in front of me and say, ‘This is the language of our colonizers. I do not want you to write letters to me in the language of my colonizer,’” she recounted to NBC Asian America. Now 29 and living in the San Francisco Bay Area, Mukhopadhyay is far removed in time and distance from the India-Pakistan partition. But 1947’s violence has shaped lives, and its impacts still linger in the South Asian diaspora. Parents and grandparents who survived it have shared their stories, and 75 years later, a dwindling group of South Asians remembers … [Read more...] about South Asians from Oklahoma to London share how partition shaped their identities
Govt. softens stand on foreign funded trips by officials
Even as the government demands more accountability from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that receive foreign funding, and activists who go on trips funded by foreign governments and agencies, a new notification by the Finance Ministry is more than willing to allow government officials to go on such trips. The office memorandum (No.4(4)/E.Coord/2015) has raised eyebrows in the Ministry of Home Affairs that has to clear such trips. The O.M., as it is called, was issued on January 5 this year detailing instructions for foreign visits of government officers, as part of a cost-cutting exercise. On Monday The Hindu had reported on the inter-ministerial war with the Ministry of External Affairs over restrictions on travel in the report. Now, MHA sources say that the language of the memorandum when it comes to allowing foreign governments/agencies to pay for officers’ international travel is also “problematic” and can expose them to “being courted” by those agencies. A Revolution in Space Access Means Revolution Everywhere
Space is undergoing a revolution in access and attainability — and may soon cease to be a distant frontier visited only by the select few. The past several years have brought about dozens of milestones in civilian space travel. In 2021 alone , a film crew visited the ISS, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic completed successful suborbital trips and the first crewed orbital mission without astronauts was achieved. In addition, both the youngest and oldest astronauts were minted, as well as the first openly LGBTQ+ crew member. Some dismiss these accomplishments as the hobbies of the ultra-rich . But it's not the first time a novel form of transportation started out as a pastime for those who could afford it. As Derek Webber, director of Spaceport Associates, points out in Space Tourism: Its History, Future and Importance , the earliest airplanes were used primarily by business people and the military. Three decades later, tickets were a fraction of their original cost and air … [Read more...] about A Revolution in Space Access Means Revolution Everywhere
