Nearly three out of four European Union women think the COVID-19 pandemic has spurred an increase in physical and psychological violence against them, according to a Eurobarometer poll published on Friday. The poll, commissioned by the European Parliament ahead of Women’s Day on March 8, shows 77% of women in the EU think the pandemic caused a rise in gender violence in their countries, with nine in 10 respondents in Greece and Portugal saying so. Asked how to tackle the problem, 58% of interviewed women said it should be made easier to report gender violence. About a third of EU women said the pandemic had a negative impact on their personal income, according to the poll, which is based on a sample of nearly 27,000 women aged 15 or more from all 27 EU countries. “The results of the Eurobarometer survey confirm what we already know: the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected women and girls in myriads of ways,” said lawmaker Robert Biedron, who chairs the European … [Read more...] about Most European Union Women Blame Covid Pandemic for Spike in Gender Violence: Poll

Malian Govt Accused Macron’s France of Collaborating with Jihadists
BAMAKO, Mali (AP) – Mali’s foreign minister is accusing France of having colluded with the same Islamic extremists that it spent nearly a decade fighting until its troops departed earlier this week, an allegation sharply denied by the French government. The inflammatory letter sent to the president of the U.N. Security Council is the latest effort to undermine support for France, Mali’s former colonizer, at a time when some fear the French military departure could pave the way for militants to intensify their attacks. The last French troops from Operation Barkhane left Mali on Monday after relations sharply deteriorated with the Malian junta leader who seized power two years ago. “The government of Mali has several pieces of evidence that these flagrant violations of Malian airspace have been used by France to gather intelligence for terrorist groups operating in the Sahel and to drop arms and ammunition to them,” Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop wrote in his letter to the U.N. … [Read more...] about Malian Govt Accused Macron’s France of Collaborating with Jihadists

Russia warns nuclear plant disaster will spill radiation over three European countries
Russia has warned of the horrific potential consequences of a man-made disaster at a nuclear power plant in Ukraine . The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is currently held by Russia and has seen recent fighting flashpoints between Russia and Ukraine and even shelling. The skirmishes earned an outpouring of fury from United Nations (UN) chiefs and nuclear experts, while Ukraine's authorities have been performing disaster response drills in the event of a catastrophic incident at the plant. Emergency responders were seen donning protective equipment and scanning 'patients' for radiation. Russia accused Ukraine of planning a "provocation" while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited the plant last Friday and is set to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky . Estonian minister defends visa ban against Russian tourists
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — Estonia’s foreign minister on Thursday defended his country’s decision to bar Russian tourists, saying they are shirking their “moral responsibility” to stand up to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime and its “genocidal war” in Ukraine. The small Baltic country, which shares a 300-kilometer (190-mile) border with Russia, stopped issuing tourist visas to Russians months ago, and as of Thursday no longer accepts those previously issued. “Our idea is to give a signal to all our European partners, all our Western community partners, to close down our borders to Russian citizens, except humanitarian cases,” Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu told The Associated Press in an interview in Tallinn. “Russian citizens are not welcome in Europe. Their country is committing a genocidal war against an innocent people.” Despite bans on air travel from … [Read more...] about Estonian minister defends visa ban against Russian tourists
Turkey’s Erdogan jostles to be Putin’s partner, Ukraine peacemaker
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan heads to Ukraine Thursday as the most likely peacemaker in a war that has pitted NATO and the European Union firmly against Russia. Erdogan and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the western city of Lviv, with the nascent UN-Turkish-facilitated Black Sea grain export deal likely top of the agenda. The Turkish president may also be carrying a message from Russian President Vladimir Putin , who he met in the Black Sea resort town of Sochi earlier this month. Erdogan—now needed by both Ukraine and Russia—may yet play a key role in any eventual ceasefire, though for now an end to the fighting looks unlikely. In the meantime Erdogan—ambitious, opportunistic, and pragmatic—will deal with both sides, seeking to stabilize its region, its beleaguered economy, and grow its international influence. "Turkey is trying to find a middle road," said Fatih Ceylan, … [Read more...] about Turkey’s Erdogan jostles to be Putin’s partner, Ukraine peacemaker
Data opportunity at the G20
The global politics of data is rapidly evolving as leading and emerging digital economies like the European Union (EU), the U.S., India, Indonesia, and South Africa strive to protect, monetise, and leverage data collected within their territories for domestic purposes. The age of borderless data with limited or no government control, once an aspiration, appears behind us. Increasing privacy and security concerns coupled with economic interests have compelled governments to institute rules and standards that govern and restrict cross-border flows with natural implications for negotiations on global trade and commerce. Indeed, the sheer amount of data being generated and shared globally has necessitated governments to exert more control over the use, sharing, and cross-border flow of data. According to the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), data localisation laws have more than doubled from 2017 to 2021, indicating that states seek and want increasing levels of … [Read more...] about Data opportunity at the G20
Russian spacewalk ends early after spacesuit battery malfunctions
One of two cosmonauts working outside the International Space Station on Wednesday safely returned to the laboratory's airlock after an electrical issue on his spacesuit forced Moscow's ground control to end the routine spacewalk early, U.S. and Russian officials said. Oleg Artemyev was nearly three hours into a six-hour spacewalk when voltage levels in his spacesuit's battery began to drop, prompting flight controllers in Moscow to order the cosmonaut's immediate return to the space station's airlock. "Oleg, drop everything and go back," a flight controller urged Artemyev from mission control in Moscow, as heard on a live feed of space-to-ground audio. "Drop everything and start going back right away... Go back and connect to station power." Artemyev returned to the airlock and connected his suit to … [Read more...] about Russian spacewalk ends early after spacesuit battery malfunctions
Heatwave in Southwest Europe: Nearly Half of EU Territory ‘At Risk’ of Drought, Say Researchers
Researchers at the European Commission warned on Monday that nearly half of the EU’s territory is currently at risk of drought, as southwest Europe wilted under a punishing heatwave. In a report for July, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre said 46 per cent of the EU’s territory was exposed to warning-level drought, with 11 per cent at an alert level, with crops already suffering from the lack of water. Italy was the hardest hit, with the Po River basin in the north of the country facing the highest level possible of drought severity, the EU said. In Spain, water reservoir volumes are currently 31 per cent lower than the 10-year average, the report said, while in Portugal, water to produce hydroelectric energy is at half the average of the previous seven years. The EU researchers also warned that the lack of water and strong heat are driving crop yields lower in France, Romania, Spain, Portugal and Italy. Weather forecasts predict more of the same, the report … [Read more...] about Heatwave in Southwest Europe: Nearly Half of EU Territory ‘At Risk’ of Drought, Say Researchers
