Student Assistants at Private Schools are Deemed “Employees” and May Form Unions

On August 23, 2016, in a 3-1 decision overturning 45 years of precedent, the National Labor Relations Board (Board) ruled that students working at private universities as teaching and research assistants are statutory “employees” under the National Labor Relations Act (Act) and may form unions. This decision stems from a labor dispute at Columbia University in New York, where a group of graduate students filed a petition for representation by the United Auto Workers union. The university challenged the petition on the grounds that the graduate students were not “employees” within the meaning of Section 2(3) of the Act.In an extraordinary, but nonetheless unsurprising, decision, the three democratic members of the Board held that student assistants are entitled to the full panoply of rights provided by the Act. State Govt. cannot re-write the definition of Section 2(d) of Right to Education Act : Rajasthan HC [Read Judgment]

Rajasthan High Court has held that the State Government is not competent & holding any authority to re-write the definition of Sec.2 (d) of the Right to Education Act, 2009. New York’s Non-Profit Revitalization Act of 2013 Changes the Governance of Private Colleges, Universities and Schools

Effective July 1, 2014, New York’s Non-Profit Revitalization Act, (the Act) fundamentally changes the governance of non-profit private colleges, universities and schools and other charitable organizations.  New York, which labored under cumbersome and antiquated regulatory statutes, has created a simpler method of creating new non-profit entities.  It has also adopted many of the best governance practices already employed by private schools in New York State and many other reforms long sought by charitable enterprises and their counsel.   Non-profit organizations can now incorporate, dissolve and merge more easily. Key Notice Provisions Relating to Wisconsin School Districts in the 2015-2017 Biennial Budget Bill

On July 14, 2015, the 2015-2017 Biennial Budget Bill took effect. The Budget Bill, adopted as 2015 Wisconsin Act 55, imposes new requirements on schools to annually provide public notice of academic standards and educational options, as well as the school's accountability report for each school year. Notice of Academic StandardsFor nearly twenty years, pursuant to Wis. Stat. § 118.30(1g)(a)1, school boards have been required to adopt academic standards in the core areas of math, science, reading and writing, geography, and history. Although required to adopt standards, schools have not been required to provide the public with notice of those standards. . .until now.Act 55 amended Wis. Stat. § 120.12(13) to require that school boards provide notice of academic standards adopted under Wis. Stat. § 118.30(1g)(a)1 in two instances. Group Warns Hundreds Of School Districts They May Be Putting Student Lives In Danger

POLITICS 04/06/2018 12:55 pm ET A coalition of activists sent letters to hundreds of school districts warning them against a particular school bus operator. By Rebecca Klein In Chattanooga, Tennessee, in November 2016, a school bus carrying Hamilton County Schools elementary students flipped over and crashed into a tree, killing six children. All the children were between the ages of 6 and 10. The driver, Johnthony Walker, was found guilty on numerous criminal charges for his role in the crash. But a local activist group is also pointing fingers at another party ― the private company that contracted with schools to operate the buses. On Friday, the group, called the Stand Up for School Bus Safety Coalition, sent a letter and report to more than 250 school districts around the country warning them about the company’s track record.
