The city council of Haven, Kansas , voted 3-2 on Monday to reverse a unanimous decision they made May 2 to remove "In God We Trust" decals from the city's police cars following an uproar from some in the community. The city attorney said the Haven City Council's previous decision emerged from a desire to maintain a separation between church and state , according to local KWCH. The follow-up vote on Monday was not on the city council's original agenda, which had to move their weekly forum to a nearby community center because of how many attended. Seven people spoke at the typically uneventful meeting, where all but one supported the decals. Moscow says more Mariupol fighters surrender; Kyiv silent on their fate
KYIV/MARIUPOL, Ukraine (Reuters) - Russia said on Wednesday nearly 700 more Ukrainian fighters had surrendered in Mariupol but Kyiv was silent about their fate, while a pro-Russian separatist leader said commanders were still holed up in tunnels beneath the Azovstal steelworks. More than a day after Kyiv announced it had ordered its garrison in Mariupol to stand down, the ultimate outcome of Europe's bloodiest battle for decades remained unresolved. Ukrainian officials halted all public discussion of the fate of fighters who had made their last stand there. "The state is making utmost efforts to carry out the rescue of our servicemen. Let's wait. Currently, the most important thing is to save the lives of our heroes," military spokesman Oleksandr Motuzaynik told a news conference. "Any information to the public could endanger that process." Russia said 694 more fighters had surrendered overnight, bringing the total number of people who had laid down arms to 959. Russian pranksters claim to have George W. Bush as latest victim
A pair of well-known Russian pranksters claim to have tricked former U.S. President George W. Bush into speaking to them about the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine . Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexei Stolyarov posted a brief video to the Russian video sharing site Rutube on Tuesday that appears to show Bush speaking to the duo about the conflict. Kuznetsov and Stolyarov, who are also known as Vovan and Lexus, have made headlines in the past for pranking high-profile individuals including musician Elton John and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . The pair were previously accused of working for the Kremlin, which they denied in remarks to The Guardian in 2016. Bush has been vocal about his opposition to the Russian invasion, calling it the "gravest security crisis on the European continent since World War II" after the first attack in February. In Tuesday's 43-second video, Bush says: "I wanted Ukraine into NATO ." The video, backed with dramatic music, shows … [Read more...] about Russian pranksters claim to have George W. Wishing peace on war-torn Kharkiv
HAN YOUNG-IK The author is the political news editor of the JoongAng Ilbo. Koreans may not be familiar with Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine. As there is no direct flight to Kyiv, the historic capital of Ukraine, it is only natural that Koreans don’t know much about the city. However, Kharkiv in Ukraine, which some may say is “a country on the other side of the earth with not much to do with Korea” is actually not a place with no ties. The only school for Koryoin (ethnic Koreans from post-Soviet countries) in Ukraine is located there. It is estimated that there are about 20,000 Koryoin in Ukraine, those who were forcibly displaced by Stalin and their descendants. Another relationship, a bad one, is that Kharkiv was the main production base of the T-34 tank, which left the South Korean forces in a panic in the early days of the Korean War (1950-53). Just like the lives of the displaced Koryoin, the city of Kharkiv had many ups and downs in modern history. During World … [Read more...] about Wishing peace on war-torn Kharkiv
Live updates | Report: Turkey lists Sweden, Finland demands
By The Associated Press ANKARA, Turkey — A pro-government Turkish newspaper says Turkey has drawn up a list of 10 demands it will reportedly ask Sweden and Finland to meet before it can approve their NATO membership. The list published by Sabah newspaper on Wednesday calls on the two countries to stop any financial support to groups linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party as well as to Syrian Kurdish fighters whom Ankara views as extensions of the banned group. There are also demands that these countries halt contacts with members of the Syrian Kurdish group. Sabah said Turkey furthermore wants the two countries to “expedite” extradition proceedings for suspects wanted by Turkey on terror charges. The list also includes a demand that Sweden clamps down on what Sabah called a “disinformation” campaign against Turkey led by followers of Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara claims was behind a coup attempt in 2016. Many followers of the Gulen movement have fled to Sweden. … [Read more...] about Live updates | Report: Turkey lists Sweden, Finland demands
Zelensky’s heroes blitz Russian troops in trench and take out BMP tank
Ukrainian troops are said to have blasted Russian soldiers in a trench and destroyed an enemy BMP tank in a video released by Ukrainian military officials. The Ukrainian military said the attack was carried out by members of the 25th Airborne Brigade of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces, which boasts BMD-1 and BMD-2 airborne infantry fighting vehicles in its inventory. The Ukrainian authorities joked that this is what the "demilitarization" of Russian forces looks like. The Center for Strategic Communications said on May 18: "This is what the demilitarization of Russians by Ukrainian defenders looks like! "The video of the destruction of the enemy BMP tank was carried out by the 25th Airborne Brigade." The 25th Airborne Brigade said: "We start the morning with good news! "The infantry fighting vehicle and the 'lost' occupiers followed the 'Russian warship' at the bottom of the Black Sea!" The brigade added: "To be continued... Glory to Ukraine!"
