The Taliban's supreme leader offered prayers on July 1 for Afghanistan's earthquake victims during a speech to Islamic clerics in Kabul. The tremor in June killed more than 1,000 people in the eastern part of the country . State radio aired Haibatullah Akhundzada's speech live on Friday from the gathering in Kabul, where thousands of Islamic clerics and tribal elders are gathering for the first time since seizing power in Afghanistan in August. Women were not allowed to attend. Mr. Akhundzada's appearance added symbolic heft to the meeting and the decisions the group is considering about Afghanistan's future. The Taliban are under international pressure to be more inclusive as they struggle with Afghanistan's humanitarian crises. The powerful earthquake killed more than 1,000 people in eastern Afghanistan, igniting yet another crisis for the struggling country and further underscoring the Taliban's limited capabilities and isolation. Andhra Pradesh: Schools, colleges told to comply with electrical safety norms
Officials of the Directorate of Electrical Safety have appealed to the managements of schools and colleges to abide by safety norms to prevent electric shocks and fire mishaps. With the schools all set to reopen after the summer vacations on July 5, and with junior colleges commencing classes from July 1, Director of Electrical Safety G. Vijaya Lakshmi directed the managements to conduct a safety audit of all cables and connections to ensure the safety of students. “Most fire mishaps occur due to human negligence. Anthony Joshua needs to understand who he really is to knock down Oleksandr Usyk
August 20 in Jeddah is judgment day for Anthony Joshua . A second loss to Oleksandr Usyk would be game over for him. In a sense Joshua is still wrestling with the consequences of that defeat to Andy Ruiz three years ago. Though he avenged it six months later, he has not been the same fighter since. He needs to strip everything back to boxing and forget being a superstar and building legacies. That stuff takes care of itself. When Joshua pitched up in New York for the first Ruiz fight it was all about conquering America, establishing the AJ brand on the grandest stage. The correction came in the shape of a looping right hand. Since then he has tried to become something he is not, a technical, thinking fighter. This was the root of his problems against Usyk. Usyk is twice as technical as Joshua. He was outboxed and hurt in the first fight and looked ready to topple at the end. To succeed in the second he must impose himself from the first bell, hit Usyk with … [Read more...] about Anthony Joshua needs to understand who he really is to knock down Oleksandr Usyk
Colorado’s drop in life expectancy blamed on COVID, drugs
DENVER (AP) — Life expectancy dropped in Colorado for the second straight year in 2021. It’s the kind of decline, driven by the pandemic, not seen in decades, data from the state health department show. The average life expectancy for Colorado residents fell to 78 years in 2021. That’s slightly lower than 2020, the first year of the pandemic when it was 78.4 years, but the slide represents a persistent and significant drop of nearly three years compared to 2019. “The last time life expectancy dropped like this was in 1943, which was the most fatal year of World War II, for the nation,” said Dr. Eric France, the state’s chief medical officer. “It is tragic that we see life expectancy drop. Death rates increased by 20 percent.” Key drivers for the decline were COVID-19 and overdose deaths. The data vary by demographic group. COVID-19 was the leading cause of death among Hispanics, as well as non-Hispanic Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islanders and American Indian/Native … [Read more...] about Colorado’s drop in life expectancy blamed on COVID, drugs
HAMMER: Here’s How States Can Help Conservatives Secure Even More Legal Victories
America is currently in the midst of a broader political realignment . The political Left, which once upon a time purported to stand for the forgotten “little guy” against the titans of Big Business, has in recent years decided that Big Business is actually an ally of convenience in its long Gramsci-an “march” through the institutions. Chris Rufo has perhaps demonstrated this trend better than anyone else. And the political Right, whose once-instinctive neoliberal proclivities made it a convenient ally for Big Business, is currently rethinking its approach to political economy in general, as well as its specific relationship to culturally leftist multinational corporations. The most tangible recent expression of this rethinking has been Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ crippling punishment of The Walt Disney Company for its coming out on behalf of sexually grooming innocent children in the Sunshine State. The times, as Bob Dylan once sang, are a-changin’. (RELATED: … [Read more...] about HAMMER: Here’s How States Can Help Conservatives Secure Even More Legal Victories
