For hire or food, garden sitters save the day during summer
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 NEW YORK (AP) — Take my chard, please! The season has come when many home gardeners, their numbers booming since the pandemic began, are being rewarded with fully matured, ready-to-pick vegetables and flowers. It’s also vacation season, and this summer travel is back. How do you maintain your garden and take advantage of all that homegrown goodness during extended trips away? Even experienced gardeners can end up with more tomatoes, beans and zucchini than they’d expected come late summer. Garden sitters are one answer. Some home gardeners hire professionals, while many just rely on neighbors and hope for the best. “It’s really hard to leave the garden,” said Theresa Fiumano-Rhatigan, a longtime home gardener in Brooklyn. She relies on her parents and other nearby relatives as garden sitters during her five weeks each summer in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. … [Read more...] about For hire or food, garden sitters save the day during summer
California heat persists, but no call for power cutbacks
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Heat advisories remained in effect Thursday in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys and adjacent areas but managers of California’s power grid did not repeat the previous day’s call for voluntary conservation of electricity. Widespread triple-digit temperatures were again predicted, along with high humidity, raising the risk of heat-related illnesses, the National Weather Service said. On Wednesday, the California Independent System Operator asked residents to voluntarily reduce electrical use from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. to avoid stress on the grid that can lead to power failures. A surge of monsoon moisture created extensive cloud cover that kept the day’s high in the low 90s in the Sacramento area, but temperatures soared elsewhere in California’s interior. The Redding airport hit a record 110 degrees (43.3 Celsius), Bakersfield baked at … [Read more...] about California heat persists, but no call for power cutbacks
Chipotle to pay workers $20 million over sick pay violations
Fast food workers in New York City are to get a $20 million settlement after Chipotle Mexican Grill was found to have violated labor laws on sick pay. Each worker at their branches in the Big Apple will get a $50 payment for every week they worked from November 2017 to April 2022. It is estimated that 13,000 workers will qualify for the payment. In addition, Chipotle has agreed to pay $1 million in civil penalties. The deal follows a year-long investigation sparked by complaints from 160 Chipotle workers and trade union leaders. The Fair Workweek Law—brought into force by New York City in 2017—requires fast food bosses to give workers their shift schedules at least two weeks in advance or pay a bonus. Bosses must also give workers at least 11 hours off between shifts on consecutive days or get written consent and pay them an extra $100. The city accused Chipotle of violating all of these policies. New York Mayor Eric Adams said: "Restaurants and fast food outlets are a … [Read more...] about Chipotle to pay workers $20 million over sick pay violations
Lake Mead water use reductions essential to stop “catastrophic collapse”
Lake Mead is at risk of "catastrophic collapse" if nothing is done to reduce water use at the manmade reservoir that straddles the Arizona/Nevada border, U.S. government officials have warned. Water levels are forecast to drop further before the end of August and measures have been unveiled to minimize damage to the ecosystem and the strain on local communities. According to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Lake Mead's water is 1,042.38 feet above sea level, as of August 16. The USBR predicts the water level will drop to 1,042.35 feet before September. Longer-term USBR forecasts suggest the water level will decline to 1,019 feet by August 2023 and 1,013 feet in July 2024. The USBR is asking people to use as little water as possible and has announced that the reservoir—the largest in the U.S.—will operate under its first Level 2a Shortage Condition in 2023. This means downstream releases from the Hoover Dam will be reduced in 2023 to Arizona, Nevada and Mexico. Photos show U.S., NATO military drills for “combat-readiness” in Europe
NATO has touted exercises in Europe that it says show the military strength and unity of the alliance amid concerns in the bloc that Russia could widen its invasion of Ukraine beyond its borders. In a series of tweets, the U.S. mission to NATO shared images and video of recent drills in Poland , the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Seas , as Moscow continues to portray its invasion of Ukraine as a wider battle with the alliance. "Check out this live-fire exercise with troops, which took place in Drawsko Pomorskie, Poland, where America's forward-deployed corps in Europe train with our Allies and partners," one of the tweets said, with four images of military hardware being tested. Another tweet described how ships from the reaction force, NATO Maritime Group Two, had finished exercises in the Adriatic and Mediterranean seas and how alliance members "work every day to ensure strong maritime capabilities to deter aggression" as well as "preserve safety and security of the … [Read more...] about Photos show U.S., NATO military drills for “combat-readiness” in Europe
Cloud hangs over U.S. chipmakers on worries data centre growth could slow
Cloud and data centres, the chip industry's strongest sector, may be its next problem: Signs are showing that growth could slow in what has been a pillar during the COVID era as consumers signed up for cloud-based entertainment and companies retooled their offices. (Sign up to our Technology newsletter, Today’s Cache, for insights on emerging themes at the intersection of technology, business and policy. Click here to subscribe for free.) Analysts say the cloud market has rarely had to weather a prolonged economic downturn since it rose to prominence in the last decade as more businesses adopted the technology, making it harder to predict if it's recession proof or it will be hit in an economic downtown. As 40-year-high inflation weighs on consumers and economists debate recession signals, advertisers have been tightening their purse strings, say Big Tech companies. “Investors are worried it's the next shoe to drop," said Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon, adding that an … [Read more...] about Cloud hangs over U.S. chipmakers on worries data centre growth could slow
