A man has been banned from keeping animals for two years after dogs were found crammed into a livestock trailer at Appleby Horse Fair. When RSPCA inspectors examined the trailer, they found some of the dogs and puppies, who were confined in cages, were suffering from parasite infections. A German shepherd puppy was in such poor health that sadly a vet decided she needed to be put to sleep to end her suffering. The RSPCA initially took 14 dogs from the trailer into its care, and prosecuted two people for neglecting 10 of the animals. John Lowther, of Kidacre Park, Leeds and Marina Lowther, of Westway, Farsley, Leeds, both pleaded guilty to four charges of causing unnecessary suffering to animals under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 when they appeared for sentencing at Bradford Magistrates’ Court on May 10. RSPCA warns against treating pets at home as owners unable to afford care
The RSPCA has introduced new guidance for worried pet owners to help them through the ongoing cost of living crisis. The charity received 3,644 calls last year categorised as 'help with vet bills', a growth of 12 per cent on the year before when 3,241 calls were received. The RSPCA's chief vet Caroline Allen said: "Times are tough for so many people at the moment, the cost of living is spiralling and many people may face difficult financial decisions over the coming months. "It may be tempting to bury your head in the sand if your pet seems unwell and you are worried about costs but this can lead to increased problems later down the line. "The first step towards helping your pet is contacting a vet. Sign up to our TeamDogs newsletter for your weekly dose of dog news, pictures and stories. Sweden Rolls Out Fifth Covid Shot
STOCKHOLM (AP) – Sweden is recommending a fifth COVID-19 vaccine dose for people with an increased risk of becoming seriously ill, including pregnant women and anyone aged 65 and over, authorities said Tuesday, adding that the country must “be prepared for an increased spread during the upcoming autumn and winter season.” “The vaccine is our strongest tool for preventing serious illness and death,” Swedish Social Affairs Minister Lena Hallengren said, adding the pandemic is not over. As of Sept. 1, Sweden recommends that another booster shot is given to people aged 65 and older and people over 18 in the risk groups. The Swedish Public Health Agency said the latter includes pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems and people with heart and lung disease. “In general, the risk of serious illness is assessed as low for adults under the age of 65 who have been vaccinated with three doses, but the risk increases with age and varies within the group,” agency chief Karin … [Read more...] about Sweden Rolls Out Fifth Covid Shot
