In a plush, tree-lined bylane of Alwarpet, in a neighbourhood accustomed to buttery croissants and French- pressed coffee, sits a little corner mess where you can have unlimited portions of rice, dried fish sambal, meen kuzhambu, chicken curry, rasam, sambar, kootu and poriyal for just ₹160. At lunch on a heat-stricken weekday, all five tables under a quietly humming AC are full. “It is heartening to see walk-ins from every demographic: from security guards to executives in huge SUVs,” says 30-year-old Vikram Reddy, one of the four entrepreneurs behind Kaaram Karaikudi Mess. He pauses mid-conversation to bid adieu to an elderly guest with a cane, being helped out gently by a young companion — the duo has been a regular ever since the two-week-old restaurant opened. Repeat customers — and the patronage of established chefs and some celebrities — are Vikram’s proof that he was right in his basic business premise: “Everyone misses simple traditional food, and wants to eat it in … [Read more...] about Chennai’s young restaurateurs celebrate street food and home-style meals

Live updates | Report: Turkey lists Sweden, Finland demands
By The Associated Press ANKARA, Turkey — A pro-government Turkish newspaper says Turkey has drawn up a list of 10 demands it will reportedly ask Sweden and Finland to meet before it can approve their NATO membership. The list published by Sabah newspaper on Wednesday calls on the two countries to stop any financial support to groups linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party as well as to Syrian Kurdish fighters whom Ankara views as extensions of the banned group. There are also demands that these countries halt contacts with members of the Syrian Kurdish group. Sabah said Turkey furthermore wants the two countries to “expedite” extradition proceedings for suspects wanted by Turkey on terror charges. The list also includes a demand that Sweden clamps down on what Sabah called a “disinformation” campaign against Turkey led by followers of Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara claims was behind a coup attempt in 2016. Many followers of the Gulen movement have fled to Sweden. … [Read more...] about Live updates | Report: Turkey lists Sweden, Finland demands
SC Adjourns Hearing on West Bengal’s Suit Against CBI Probe in Post-poll Violence Cases
The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned till November 16 the hearing on the lawsuit filed by the West Bengal government which alleged that the CBI is going ahead with the investigation in post-poll violence cases without securing the pre-requisite nod from the state under the law. A bench of justices L Nageswara Rao and B R Gavai noted that the Centre has filed a counter-affidavit in response to the suit filed by the state, and said it will hear the matter on a non-miscellaneous day. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for West Bengal, sought a specific date since the CBI is proceeding with the FIRs. “We’ll have it on November 16. Parties may file a rejoinder and additional document if any,” the bench said. The West Bengal government, in its original civil suit under Article 131 of the Constitution, has referred to the provisions of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act 1946, and said the central agency has been proceeding with investigations and filing FIRs without getting … [Read more...] about SC Adjourns Hearing on West Bengal’s Suit Against CBI Probe in Post-poll Violence Cases

Karnataka SSLC Result Tomorrow: Students to Grace Marks, Know Marking Scheme
Ahead of the Karnataka SSLC Results 2022, good news for students. The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) has decided to give grace marks to students. In wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and difficulties encountered during remote learning, KSEEB had decided to give 10 per cent grace marks to candidates in SSLC exams. If any student needs three marks each in three subjects, teachers can now make an exception and award the same from the grace marks kitty. Previously, this was allowed to up to five marks. The move is expected to take the pass percentage or number of students passing the exam up. Last year, Karnataka Board reported its highest ever passing percentage as all students barring one were promoted to the next class. While none of the male students failed the exam, the pass percentage among female students was 99.99. Only one student failed the exam after she took the exam from the wrong centre. While the pass percentage this year might be less than 2021’s … [Read more...] about Karnataka SSLC Result Tomorrow: Students to Grace Marks, Know Marking Scheme
1 million Americans have died of COVID-19. Data shows California’s role in the staggering toll
COVID-19 has officially claimed 1 million lives in the U.S., according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The disease has killed more than 30 out of every 10,000 people in the country since the pandemic began. Since March 2020, an average of nearly 1,250 people have officially died of COVID-19 in the U.S. every day. That count, which peaked in January 2021 with up to 4,400 deaths a day, has slowed down recently, with an average of 350 to 600 daily deaths in April and May, according to Johns Hopkins. While this death toll is staggering, it’s almost certainly a serious undercount. Many COVID-related deaths are not officially counted as COVID, so the actual number of deaths from the disease could be several hundred thousand higher, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. California, which has more people than any other state, has also had the most deaths: More than 90,000 Californians have died of COVID-19 as of early May, an average of about 113 … [Read more...] about 1 million Americans have died of COVID-19. PHOTOS: Inside Colorado’s first cannabis “bar,” JAD’s Mile High Smoke in Denver
Since legal recreational marijuana sales began in 2014, Coloradans have had a plethora of places to buy weed — but not a ton of places to actually consume it. For many years, consumption spaces like Tetra Lounge and the Coffee Joint in Denver invited tokers to come and bring their own substances for use, but locals’ options were limited to just that — until recently. JAD’s Mile High Smoke opened in late April as the state’s first recreational sales and hospitality business in the state, a formal title meaning a lounge where consumers can both buy weed and smoke, eat or drink it onsite. That means you can literally belly up to a bar and order a non-alcoholic, THC-infused beer and a gram of marijuana served with a side of rolling papers. RELATED: Denver hotel to open cannabis smoking lounge in 2022 It’s not so much a novel concept as it is a move towards truly destigmatizing cannabis use, according to owner Josh Davis. He believes that once JAD’s proves the model … [Read more...] about PHOTOS: Inside Colorado’s first cannabis “bar,” JAD’s Mile High Smoke in Denver
