England fans are facing the most expensive World Cup in history at Qatar 2022. There are 60% fewer tickets in the cheapest categories compared to Russia 2018, fans groups warned today. Fifa has just announced 1.2 million tickets were sold within hours of them going on sale this week. But the 10,000 Three Lions supporters expected to make the 7,000-mile round trip will also have to pay for costly hotels and flights. Gareth Southgate’s side go into the tournament as one of the favourites. They reached the semi-finals in Russia, and suffered an agonising Euro 2020 final penalty shoot out defeat to Italy. Matt Willis, spokesman for the Football Supporters Association, said: “The ticket prices in Qatar are a concern for us. “There is a massive reduction in the number of Category 3 tickets which are the cheapest available. “If you look at the 974 stadium in Doha, compared to the Kazan venue in Russia - which have similar capacities - there are 60 percent less Cat 3 & 4 … [Read more...] about England fans face paying up to £1,180 for World Cup tickets at Qatar 2022

North star: George North’s late try hands Wales memorable win at the Stade de France
Wales claimed a superb win against France with a gritty 16-6 win at the Stade de France. Wing George North’s 73rd-minute try condemned pre-tournament favourites France to a second Six Nations loss this season after they were beaten by Italy in Rome last weekend. And with full-back Leigh Halfpenny kicking three penalties and a conversion from his four shots at goal, Wales quickly consigned last Saturday’s home defeat against Ireland to history. It was their biggest victory in the French capital for 38 years, and keeps alive chances of retaining a Six Nations title they won in Grand Slam fashion last season. France, though, are bottom of the championship, with two Frederic Michakal penalties their only scoring reward from a game that saw them booed off by a capacity crowd. And a playing surface that cut up badly throughout the contest epitomised an ugly, scruffy French performance before Wales put them out of their misery by scoring 10 points during the final seven minutes. … [Read more...] about North star: George North’s late try hands Wales memorable win at the Stade de France

The New Novels
ALTHOUGH the thing which Mr. Kipling is doing possesses such immediate significance as to hamper any cool judgment upon his measure of success, the place of honor for the year in English fiction seems indisputably to belong to Puck of Pook’s Hill. 1 It may be possible that merely as a piece of abstract literature this group of short stories will not ultimately fill the high position which now appears its due. Contemporary rating can never be infallible. But after all, this is of minor importance, since no tarnishing finger of time, no fading glamour, no change of taste, can alter the fact that in conceiving and carrying out such a plan the author proves his own claim to permanent greatness. With all his glitter (which we once feared might degenerate into glorified journalism), with all his restless flitting from land to land, his experimenting, his weakness for panache,—his Sousa moments, so to speak, — looking back upon his career it is now plain that he, the man, has been … [Read more...] about The New Novels
Leamington Spa
My dear Editor, — You can hardly have expected to hear from me again, (unless by invitation to the field of honor,) after those cruel and terrible notes upon my harmless article in the July Number. How could you find it in your heart (a soft one, as I have hitherto supposed) to treat an old friend and liege contributor in that unheard-of way? Not that I should care a fig for any amount of vituperation, if you had only let my article come before the public as I wrote it, instead of suppressing precisely the passages with which I had taken most pains, and which I flattered myself were most cleverly done. The interview with the President, for example: it would have been a treasure to the future historian; and I hold you responsible to posterity for thrusting it into the fire. However, I cannot lose so good an opportunity of showing the world the placability and sweetness that adorn my character, and therefore send you another article, in which, I trust, you will find nothing to strike … [Read more...] about Leamington Spa
An Observer of Catastrophe
Sybille Bedford, a German-born writer who has long lived in England, is not one of the twentieth century's best writers, but she is one of its most attractive literary curiosities. Born before World War I, she witnessed much of the tragedy, and enjoyed much of the beauty, that her volatile age had to offer. Bedford spent her childhood and youth in her father's decrepit schloss in Baden, in the stuffy and well-upholstered Berlin residence of other relatives, in Fascist Italy, in high bohemia on the Côte d'Azur in the 1920s, and in England. It was a rich and strange life, and in each of her four largely autobiographical novels she rendered its off-color luster and subtle moral gradations with humor and a remarkable tolerance that in no way implies an absence of judgment. The twentieth century displayed the human circus at its most grotesque, and Bedford had a ringside seat throughout the performance. Bedford is not only a novelist but also the author of books on legal issues and … [Read more...] about An Observer of Catastrophe
