Climate crisis: One-third of all plant and animal species could be extinct in 50 years, study suggests

February 13, 2020 by www.independent.co.uk

In just 50 years’ time, a third of all plant and animal species on our planet could be wiped out due to man-made climate change , US scientists have warned. The damning new study of humanity’s impact on ecosystems around the world examined recent extinctions due to climate change, along with rates of species movement and various projections of future climatic conditions. The researchers said their study is probably the first to estimate broad-scale extinction patterns due to the climate crisis by using data from recent climate-related extinctions and from rates of species movements. It is the latest research to paint a bleak picture of future biodiversity on Earth, as other scientists have warned our species is responsible for bringing about a sixth mass extinction event. The research team, from the University of Arizona used data from 538 species at 581 sites around the globe and focused on species which had been studied at the same place at least … [Read more...] about Climate crisis: One-third of all plant and animal species could be extinct in 50 years, study suggests

Climate crisis: Plan to dam entire North Sea could protect millions from rising oceans

February 13, 2020 by www.independent.co.uk

The floodwaters are coming for us. Sea levels are rising faster and could swell one to two metres in the next 80 years if greenhouse gas emissions are not swiftly reined in, according to the latest research by UN scientists. It means we are currently on track for many people alive today to see several of the world’s major cities, including London, New York, Shanghai, Los Angeles, largely lost beneath the waves, while the world would lose 1.79 million sq km of land - an area roughly the size of Libya. In Europe, the Netherlands is particularly at risk, with a third of the country already lying below sea level. So what can be done? One mega-infrastructure scheme put up for discussion by a Dutch government scientist suggests addressing the issue in northern Europe by damming in the entire North Sea. This would require the construction of two dams of unprecedented scale. The smaller of the two would be around 100 miles long and block the entire western end … [Read more...] about Climate crisis: Plan to dam entire North Sea could protect millions from rising oceans

How police response times compare in school shootings since Columbine

May 27, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Prior to the school shooting this week in Uvalde, Texas, there had been several other similar incidents, such as the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, and the police response has differed in each. On Tuesday, a mass shooting occurred at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, leaving 21 victims dead—19 children and two teachers. All of the victims were killed in a single classroom by 18-year-old Salvador Ramos. Following Tuesday's shooting, there has been controversy about the response time by police, with some parents indicating that they were angered by the amount of time it took for police to engage Ramos. During a press conference on Friday, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw explained that the first 911 call was made at about 11:30 a.m. and Ramos entered the school just a few minutes later at 11:33. According to McCraw, at about 11:51, a police sergeant arrived and, by 12:03 p.m., there were at least 19 officers in the building, while Ramos barricaded … [Read more...] about How police response times compare in school shootings since Columbine
