MEXICO CITY (AP) — A gang riot inside a border prison that left two inmates dead quickly spread to the streets of Ciudad Juarez where alleged gang members killed nine more people, including four employees of a radio station, security officials said Friday. The surge in violence recalled a far more deadly period in Juarez more than a decade earlier. Mexico's powerful drug cartels commonly use local gangs to defend their territory and carry out their vendettas. The federal government’s security undersecretary, Ricardo Mejía Berdeja, said the violence started inside the state prison after 1 p.m. Thursday, when member of the Mexicles gang attacked members of the rival Chapos. Two inmates were killed and 20 injured. Then suspected gang members outside the prison began burning businesses and shooting up Ciudad Juarez. “They attacked the civilian, innocent population like a sort of revenge,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said. “It wasn’t just the clash between two … [Read more...] about Gang violence leaves 11 dead in Mexican border city

Racist and sexist disinformation is sowing divisions among Asian Americans
A new report spotlights how disinformation not only pits Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders against other marginalized groups but also sows divisions within the community itself, sometimes to intentionally diminish its collective political influence. The study , released last week by a coalition of Asian American and Pacific Islander organizations, analyses the landscape of disinformation, or misleading information disseminated with the intent to harm, often for political agendas or profit. Researchers, who identified key practices behind the spread of disinformation, highlighted the Men’s Rights Asians movement, the prevalence of casteism and social media aggregators of Black-on-Asian crime as examples of “bad actors.” Those spreading disinformation often aim to attack and break down collective groups within Asian America, seeking to render them less powerful. In turn, they often help sustain white supremacy, the report says. “What disinformation effectively does is … [Read more...] about Racist and sexist disinformation is sowing divisions among Asian Americans
The One Social-Media Feature That People Still Love
Almost every social-media platform offers its users an option to privatize their account—a way for people to control who engages with their content, often to avoid the judgment, schadenfreude, bullying, and snark that are ubiquitous online. Many of these options aren’t terribly helpful, though. Facebook seems to constantly adjust its privacy settings, and it can be difficult to tell what information your friends have access to. On TikTok, unless you want a fully private account, you have to select who can see each and every video before you post. And Twitter’s protected-Tweets feature isn’t ideal if you have a large following; the “Retweet” button may be disabled, but your followers can still screenshot and share what you post. Instagram arguably edges out the competition with its Close Friends feature, which allows people to share Stories with a curated list of followers that is stored in their user settings. Though the app, with its recent attempts to mimic TikTok , has … [Read more...] about The One Social-Media Feature That People Still Love
Ohio gunman appeared to threaten FBI after Trump home search
By MIKE BALSAMO and SAMANTHA HENDRICKSON COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A gunman who died in a shootout after trying to get inside the FBI’s Cincinnati office apparently went on social media and called for federal agents to be killed “on sight” following the search at former President Donald Trump’s home, a law enforcement official said. Federal investigators are examining social media accounts they believe are tied to the gunman, 42-year-old Ricky Shiffer, according to the official, who was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. At least one of the messages on Trump’s Truth Social media platform appeared to have been posted after Shiffer tried to breach the FBI office. It read: “If you don’t hear from me, it is true I tried attacking the F.B.I.” Another message posted on the same site this week from @rickywshifferjr included a “call to arms” and urged people to “be ready for combat” after the FBI search at … [Read more...] about Ohio gunman appeared to threaten FBI after Trump home search
Christopher Wray Slams ‘Deplorable’ Threats; Allowed Left to Harass Supreme Court
FBI Director Christopher Wray has denounced “deplorable” threats against federal law enforcement agencies and personnel that he says have appeared since the FBI raided former President Donald Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, on Monday. On Wednesday, Wray called such threats, which have appeared on social media, “deplorable and dangerous.” (The apparent irony of the use of the word “deplorable” — once used by Hillary Clinton to mock Trump supporters — was evident lost.) However, when faced with criticism from Republicans that the FBI was not doing enough to protect conservative Supreme Court justices from protests outside their private homes — which are illegal under federal law — Wray shrugged at the risk. The protests began appearing earlier this year, when a draft decision overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked. The protests are aimed at conservative justices who joined the majority opinion in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case. Earlier this … [Read more...] about Christopher Wray Slams ‘Deplorable’ Threats; Allowed Left to Harass Supreme Court
The national security apparatus is now the enemy | Opinion
Monday's FBI raid on former President Donald Trump 's Mar-a-Lago home makes an obvious mockery of equal application of the law. Even disgraced Democrat Andrew Cuomo , displaying a hitherto undetected capacity for shame, expressed unease regarding the raid. If reports are true that the raid has to do with an ongoing negotiation between Trump's legal team and the National Archives over the retention of classified documents, odious comparisons immediately present themselves. The most obvious such comparison involves Hillary Clinton herself, Trump's defeated 2016 rival. As secretary of state, Hillary Clinton conducted official business on a personal email address and her own private server, where she improperly stored classified information—some of which was labeled "top secret." Then-FBI Director James Comey scandalized Democrats and the broader commentariat with his October 2016 announcement that the FBI was looking into some of these emails, though the FBI ultimately … [Read more...] about The national security apparatus is now the enemy | Opinion
Op-Ed: Democrats try a new campaign strategy — getting things done
The most worried political junkies in America these days may be those never-Trump former Republicans who put their hopes in the Democratic Party. They’re terrified that Democrats are incapable of winning when and where it matters most. Right now that means every election in 2022 and 2024 that involves Donald Trump as an anti-democracy cheerleader or, worst case, as a candidate himself. I’m not saying my new ex-GOP friends should relax, because I understand their trepidation. The stakes, and Trump’s rhetoric, never stop escalating. The FBI execution of a search warrant at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home has unleashed outright threats of retaliation or violence , some from people who should know much, much better. At the same time, of the many weird dynamics this year, there is this one: Democrats have been acting like Republicans lately. They’ve been strategic, disciplined and tough — racking up accomplishments that will affect people’s lives, jobs and health; strengthen America, its … [Read more...] about Op-Ed: Democrats try a new campaign strategy — getting things done
