Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 VATICAN CITY (AP) — A Vatican cardinal testified Wednesday that Pope Francis himself ordered the ouster of the Holy See’s auditor-general, turning the tables on a scandal that had sparked questions about the Vatican’s commitment to financial transparency and accountability. Cardinal Angelo Becciu opened a second day of questioning in the Vatican’s big financial fraud trial by saying Francis had recently authorized him to reveal the details of Libero Milone’s 2017 departure as the Vatican’s first auditor-general. He did so to clarify his previous testimony, during which he declined to respond to questions about Milone “out of love for the Holy Father.” The Vatican announced June 20, 2017 that Milone had resigned two years into his mandate, without providing details. His ouster, as well as the removal of PriceWaterHouseCoopers as Vatican auditors, had long been cited by Cardinal George … [Read more...] about Cardinal: Pope ordered auditor to resign over spying charge

School District Encouraged Philadelphia Teachers To Attend ‘Banging Beyond Binaries,’ ‘BDSM’ Conference
Videos exposed the extent to which a Zoom conference, which some Philadelphia teachers were encouraged to attend, discussed “gender-affirming care” for minors, transgender sex, and “masturbation sleeves,” according to City Journal. The School District of Philadelphia sent educators an email encouraging them to attend a conference on “kink,” “BDSM,” “trans sex,” and “banging beyond binaries,” according to a report from City Journal . The email was reportedly sent in July 2021 by the district’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. A School District of Philadelphia spokesperson told City Journal that the conference — hosted by a pro-LGBT organization that provides “gender-affirming care” — was for educators to discuss “issues facing the trans community.” Event sessions appeared to be far more graphic than discussing issues faced by transgender individuals, as the school district purported. Session titles included, “Preparing Young People for Gender-Affirming Care,” … [Read more...] about School District Encouraged Philadelphia Teachers To Attend ‘Banging Beyond Binaries,’ ‘BDSM’ Conference
Buffalo is latest mass shooting by gunman wearing body armor
When a shooter attacked a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, over the weekend, its security guard tried to stop him. At least one of his shots hit the gunman, but it didn’t stop the deadly rampage because the gunman was wearing body armor. Ten Black people died in the racist massacre, including security guard Aaron Salter, a retired Buffalo police officer hailed as a hero. It’s the latest mass shooting in which the gunman apparently came prepared for anyone trying to stop him with a gun. At least 21 mass shooters over the last four decades have worn some kind of body armor — and the majority of those were within the last 10 years, according to a database maintained by The Violence Project, a nonpartisan research group that tracks gun violence. Among them: A massacre that killed 12 people and injured dozens more at a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, in 2012, and another in nearby Boulder that left 10 people dead at a supermarket last year. The shooter in Texas’s deadliest … [Read more...] about Buffalo is latest mass shooting by gunman wearing body armor
Rosé wine is elevating its image with new blends and players
One out of every ten bottles consumed in the world is a rosé, according to the latest World Rosé Observatory published in 2021. Once stereotyped as a wine associated with bad taste, rosé has moved upmarket to become a third type of wine in its own right, and one that is not only suitable for aperitif time. Serious efforts on the elaboration of various rosé wines as well as on the image of rosé continue to be made, in order to meet consumer expectations and elevate the product. Over the last few days, the world of wine has been buzzing about rock star legend Jon Bon Jovi's arrival in France. The It's My Life singer wasn't in town for a concert but for one of his other passions in life: wine. The event marked the official retail launch of his wine. And his wine is none other than a rosé that the singer has concocted with top winemaker Gérard Bertrand (who also is familiar with the world of music, as he's been organising an international jazz festival at one of his domains – … [Read more...] about Rosé wine is elevating its image with new blends and players
P.J. Tucker perseveres as vital Heat organ, embraced again as ‘the heartbeat of our team’
For four days before the start of these Eastern Conference finals, left with little else to discuss during yet another extended postseason break, coach Erik Spoelstra and his Miami Heat players spoke of the impending need to make the hustle plays, be first to the ball, impose will, take care of the small stuff in the margins. Basically, all the trite notions that eventually would give way to superstars offering the spectacular during the penultimate round of the postseason. Only not so trite. And almost as they were speaking directly to and directly about veteran power forward P.J. Tucker. Because beyond all those who filled the box score Tuesday night with the gaudy, from the 41 points of Heat forward Jimmy Butler in the 118-107 Game 1 victory of the best-of-seven series to the 29 of Celtics forward Jayson Tatum in his team’s loss, it arguably was the small stuff from Tucker that carried some of the game’s greatest heft. “The heartbeat of our team,” Spoelstra said of … [Read more...] about P.J. Conjoined twin dies after surgery to separate 19 month-old boys
A conjoined twin has died during a procedure intended to separate the two 19-month-old boys. The two boys, Yusuf and Yassin, are from Yemen , a Middle Eastern country located on the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula that has been devastated by years of civil war. The brothers were born with their craniums fused together—a phenomenon referred to as craniopagus twins. The cranium is the part of the skull that encloses the brain. Twins being born with conjoined craniums is an extremely rare occurrence. One study published in the American Journal of Neuroradiology estimates that the incident of craniopagus twins is around one in 2.5 million live births. Many of these twins die in the first few days and weeks of life, or are stillborn. But in some cases, one or both of the twins survive, with or without surgery. Conjoined twins who share critical organs often have a poorer prognosis. In the case of Yusuf and Yassin, doctors said that the brothers were conjoined in … [Read more...] about Conjoined twin dies after surgery to separate 19 month-old boys
Pennsylvania lawmakers see terms ended by primary defeats
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — One of the Pennsylvania Legislature’s most powerful Republicans lost a primary race and another was in real danger Wednesday of going down to defeat, both targeted by challengers from the right. As vote counting continued, state Sen. Pat Browne of Lehigh County was a few dozen votes behind school board member and pilot Jarrett Coleman. State Rep. Stan Saylor of York County lost to Wendy Jo Fink, who promised to eliminate school property taxes. Both incumbents were attacked for being Harrisburg insiders. Saylor was elected in 1992 and Browne in 2005 after a decade in the state House. They chair the Appropriations Committee in their respective chambers. The Appropriations committees are the conduit for the state budget legislation and play a prominent role in much of the Legislature’s business. Another longtime House Republican from York … [Read more...] about Pennsylvania lawmakers see terms ended by primary defeats
Mehmet Oz Needs Miracle in the Mail in Pennsylvania Senate Primary
The results of the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania depend largely on about 30,000 mail-in ballots that have not yet been counted as of Wednesday at noon. Dr. Mehmet Oz currently holds a 2,463-vote lead over McCormick with more than 95 percent of votes reported, according to the New York Times . MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki shared a breakdown of the outstanding mail-in ballots by county: Breakdown by county of estimated uncounted GOP mail-in ballots, updated for what was received yesterday: pic.twitter.com/HlAUd28YGz — Steve Kornacki (@SteveKornacki) May 18, 2022 Several analysts observed that McCormick has carried about a nine percent lead over Oz on mail-in ballots so far counted. For McCormick to recover from his current 2,463-vote deficit, he would need to maintain or at least come near that mail-in vote advantage. An election worker continues the process of counting ballots for the Pennsylvania primary election, Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at … [Read more...] about Mehmet Oz Needs Miracle in the Mail in Pennsylvania Senate Primary
‘Conversations With Friends’ cast on what show says about love—”It’s messy”
It's been a few days now since the hotly anticipated screen adaption of Sally Rooney's novel Conversations With Friends has hit screens. No, it isn't a follow-up to Normal People , which stormed screens in 2020 with its realistic depiction of young, intense, beautifully confusing love and from the get-go, it isn't supposed to be. Instead, Conversations With Friends is a slow burn in comparison, taking audiences on a different kind of ride of romance, fueled with awkwardness, where silence says a million words, illicit eye contact can get your heart racing and forbidden kisses and late-night rendezvous leave an indescribable state of ecstasy, lingering on your mind. You know, "the-impulse-to-be-available-to-you-all-of-the-time" kind of feeling (Nick Conway, 2022). The show also explores one of the many existential questions out there that life throws at us. It's one of the ones nobody really wants to confront or admit they are even thinking about. "Is it possible to love … [Read more...] about ‘Conversations With Friends’ cast on what show says about love—”It’s messy”
Russian state TV finally admits Ukraine war is a failure and country is isolated
Russian state TV has finally admitted the Ukraine war is a failure and the country is globally isolated in a moment of shocking candour. Mikhail Khodaryonok, a retired Soviet colonel, has given a damning assessment on Russian state TV of Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine — indicating the Kremlin leader is failing with the whole world against them. In an astonishing tirade that lasts nearly five minutes, Khodaryonok told Russian state TV to stop taking "information tranquillisers" and rejected the idea that the Ukrainian army is becoming demoralised. BBC reporter Francis Scarr called it a moment of "extremely rare candour" in which the former air defence commander said Russia 's position on the world stage was in "full geopolitical isolation". He said that as much as Russia would hate to admit it, virtually the whole world is against them. Khodaryonok spoke about Russia saying it will not "put up with" Finland and Sweden’s bid to join the western NATO alliance. He said … [Read more...] about Russian state TV finally admits Ukraine war is a failure and country is isolated
