LAS VEGAS — A man who was told by the state of Nevada that he couldn't register the name "WTF Party" for political candidates is suing election officials, claiming his free speech rights were violated. The Nevada secretary of state "has prevented the WTF Party from qualifying as a minor political party based on political speech," the lawsuit says. Plaintiff Jeffrey Berns was told his proposed party name represents "an acronym that commonly serves as a substitute for a well-known profanity." Documents filed Monday with the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Reno include a state rejection letter that inserts an asterisk instead of the "F''. Attorney Rick Hsu, who represents Berns, said in an email Thursday that a 1992 U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholds the right to form political parties. Hsu declined to comment further about the lawsuit, where the proposed party would stand on the political spectrum, or what candidates it might field. The lawsuit calls for Nevada Secretary of State … [Read more...] about Lawsuit in Nevada calls ‘WTF Party’ name a free speech right

French politics might be on the verge of a profound shake-up as former gilet jaune leader, Jacline Mouraud, launched a new political party she described as "the common sense party." Mouraud, who's credited as one of the first leaders of the gilets jaunes movement, said her party, Les Emergents (The Emergence), would do things differently. “We want to put forward a party that’s handled with the heart and not money. Often, we have the impression that politicians have a rock instead of a heart." "We are going to do things with the heart, it’s going to make a big difference,” she said. The 51-year-old came to the fore last October when she posted a video on Facebook criticising Emmanuel Macron’s government for planning to increase fuel taxes. The video went viral and had more than six million views at time of writing. Les Emergents’ programme will include withdrawing privileges from elected representatives, reducing VAT on basic products and increasing … [Read more...] about Former gilet jaune leader launches new political party ‘Les Emergents’
Ten of the best-known political parties vying in the March 24 election have released dozens of jingles on YouTube and on their Facebook pages since late last year. Fundamentally, “the song remains the same”, and it’s not one of Led Zeppelin’s. There are the same dreary appeals to nostalgia or, alternatively, to futurism, the same unconvincing boasts. What distinguishes this election season’s crop of tunes from those of the past is the sheer variety of styles. The staple choices for mustering votes – rousing marches and look tung (country folk) – are now jostling with pop rock, songs-for-life and even rap. And for the southern provinces there are political messages set to the rhythmic chanting of nasheed, sometimes known as anasyid. As well, since a song online has to be accompanied by a music video, we’re seeing a lot of images of the parties’ candidates for the premier’s job putting in cheerful appearances at … [Read more...] about The political parties’ campaign anthems re popping up on social media, but is anyone listening?
