A dad-of-four has been handed a devastating diagnosis after he suffered memory problems for 20 years. Phil Burdekin kept forgetting appointments and missing turns when driving lorries. At first, it was easy to dismiss it as stress-related - but over the decades it got worse and the 63-year-old from Southport got increasingly concerned. Speaking to The Liverpool Echo , he said: "I was getting worried - I didn't know what it was, and then my wife got fed up of me asking the same questions again and again, so she said I'd better go to the doctor." Mr Burdekin described the diagnosis of young-onset dementia as a “nightmare” and has said suffering with the condition has left him “suicidal” as he struggles to take part in life now. He added: "It was very stressful. I cried a lot. It was killing me not knowing anything." The father-of-four said that he has felt 'suicidal' at times ( Image: Andrew Teebay Liverpool Echo) Mr Burdekin was only 55 at the time when a … [Read more...] about Dad-of-four handed ‘nightmare’ diagnosis after suffering memory problems for 20 years

Warring pensioner neighbours spend £500,000 in 20-year battle over tiny strip of land
Two warring neighbours have spent half a million pounds fighting a bitter boundary battle over the last two decades. Pensioners David Poole and Terry Doyle have been locked in a turf war over a narrow strip of land which separates their luxury homes in Perthshire since 1999. The lengthy feud has seen several costly trips to the civil courts and even sparked an assault trial. On Tuesday, a sheriff ordered a hearing that could finally resolve the ugly feud between the retired businessmen. Mr Poole, 81, who has instigated the legal action, told the Daily Record his latest court bid was an “open and shut case” intended to ban his rival from stepping on his land for good. Terence Doyle insists he is the rightful owner of the land ( Image: Perthshire Picture Agency (PPA)) But Mr Doyle, 82, insists he is the rightful owner of the land, saying his “rogue” neighbours had “bled him dry” by repeatedly hauling him before the courts. France sees EU membership for Ukraine in ’15 or 20 years’: minister
A bid by Ukraine to join the European Union would not be finalised for "15 or 20 years," France's Europe Minister said on Sunday, rejecting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's hopes for a quick entry in the wake of Russia's invasion of his country. "We have to be honest. If you say Ukraine is going to join the EU in six months, or a year or two, you're lying," Clement Beaune told Radio J . "It's probably in 15 or 20 years, it takes a long time." "I don't want to offer Ukrainians any illusions or lies," he said, reiterating an offer by President Emmanuel Macron to create a looser "European political community" that could help integrate Ukraine with the bloc sooner. That offer has received a cold welcome from Mr. Zelensky, who on Saturday denounced "such compromises" and insisted on an immediate start of the process towards full EU membership. But Mr. Beaune said Mr. Macron's proposal is not "an alternative to joining the European political community. It doesn't prevent … [Read more...] about France sees EU membership for Ukraine in ’15 or 20 years’: minister
Over 60 Australian Animal Species May Face Extinction Within 20 Years: Study
Australian researchers have identified more than 60 animal species that might face extinction within 20 years. In a study published on Tuesday, a team from Charles Darwin University (CDU) identified 63 vertebrates they believe are most likely to go extinct by 2041, Xinhua news agency reported. However, they found that even limited conservation efforts could save at least 47 of the species, including 21 fishes, 12 birds, six mammals, four frogs and four reptiles. “We know who they are, where they are, what threatens them and have a good idea of how to save them. It just needs commitment,” Stephen Garnett, a conservation biologist and co-author of the study, was quoted by the Australian Associated Press. About half the habitat of the 47 species are in existing nature reserves, meaning small, targeted conservation efforts would be possible and relatively inexpensive. Other species such as the King Island brown thornbill and the swift parrot would require new habitat protections. … [Read more...] about Over 60 Australian Animal Species May Face Extinction Within 20 Years: Study

What Nostalgia? Vinyl’s Biggest Boosts Are Coming From Pop Fans and Mass Merchants (Even if Indie Stores and Rock Still Rule)
Click here to read the full article. In the longtime parlance of music retail, the vinyl format’s biggest enthusiasts over the years are sometimes known as “crate diggers.” But it might be time to put that image to bed… unless you consider the display racks at Target to be crates, and the young women who are flipping through contemporary releases by Harry Styles, Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift to be diggers. Data being collected on an ongoing basis by Luminate (formerly PMC Data and, before that, Nielsen) shows that huge growth for vinyl in the last couple of years has largely been driven by pop superstars and mass merchants — which doesn’t mean that rock ‘n’ roll, indie stores and the traditionalist music geeks who favor them are experiencing any declines at all. It’s just that generation gaps, genre gaps and point-of-purchase gaps have all but disappeared as vinyl has become the No. 1 way for fans to experience music outside of streaming subscriptions.
