Trevor Noah, French Ambassador Spar Over ‘White Supremacist,’ African Identity World Cup Joke
Culture Trevor Noah, host of Comedy Central’sThe Daily Show, responded to backlash over his “legitimizing” of racist ideologies after a joke the comedian made on his show Monday about Africans—and not the French—winning the World Cup. French Ambassador to the United States Gérard Araud sent a strongly worded message to Noah declaring his anger about the South African-born comedian making a joke that implies “whiteness is the only definition of being French.” Noah’s joke referenced the dark skin and African heritage of several members of the French team, who beat Croatia 4-2 in Moscow the day before. Noah said the players’ African descent makes France “Africans’ backup team.” “I get it, they have to say it's the French team,” Noah said Monday. “But look at those guys. You don't get that tan by hanging out in the south of France, my friends. Basically, if you don’t understand, … [Read more...] about Trevor Noah, French Ambassador Spar Over ‘White Supremacist,’ African Identity World Cup Joke
Macron Tells French Bishops He Wants to Heal Church-State Relations
French President Emmanuel Macron told a meeting of French bishops Monday that he wished to heal Church-State relations in the country, whose particular strain of secularism (“laïcité”) was profoundly colored by the anti-clericalism of the French Revolution and its aftermath. “A president of the French republic who takes no interest in the Church and its Catholics would be failing in his duty,” Macron told them, saying he wished to enter into a “dialogue of truth” with the Church.A number of left-wing politicians immediately registered their indignation over Macron’s remarks, with former socialist prime minister Manuel Valls tweeting that “laïcité is France,” adding that French secular identity comes from the 1905 Law ordaining a radical separation of church and state. “The law of 1905, the whole law, nothing but the law,” he remarked. For his part, the newly-installed Socialist Party leader Olivier … [Read more...] about Macron Tells French Bishops He Wants to Heal Church-State Relations
French Medical Council Denounces Pope’s ‘Harsh Words’ on Abortion
The French Medical Council denounced Pope Francis Wednesday for having compared abortionists to paid “hit men” hired to bump off children. In a letter to the papal nuncio to France, Archbishop Luigi Ventura, the president of the French Medical Council, Dr. Patrick Bouet, said that the pope had “uttered very harsh words about abortion, which greatly disturbed the French medical community that I have the honor and the responsibility to represent.”Pope Francis repeatedly spoke off the cuff during his General Audience in Saint Peter’s Square Wednesday, adding colorful language to condemn abortion in the strongest of terms. Often the killing of human life in the womb is defended “in the name of safeguarding other rights,” the pope told crowds gathered in the square. “But how can an act that suppresses innocent and helpless life in its beginnings be therapeutic, civil, or even human?” “I ask you,” the pope continued, “is … [Read more...] about French Medical Council Denounces Pope’s ‘Harsh Words’ on Abortion
Departing French ambassador reflects on a turbulent time in Washington
Karen DeYoung, The Washington Post Published 9:06 pm PDT, Thursday, April 18, 2019 On Thursday, the eve of his last day as French ambassador to the United States, Gérard Araud tweeted an analysis of France's "yellow vest" protests; questions about the use of sanctions as a tool of foreign policy; a U.S.-topped list of national prison populations; and a soothing Monet painting, "to remind us of the simple beauty of the world." The range of subject matter was typical for Araud, 66, who became known as the diplomatic dean of social media during his five-year tenure in Washington. He tweeted his tears this week as Notre Dame burned. He has regularly posted his favorite cartoons and tirelessly touted French culture. He quotes philosophers and is a master of economically worded put-downs. On the night President Donald Trump was elected, he wrote that "a world collapses before our eyes," an admittedly undiplomatic observation that he quickly deleted - although not before … [Read more...] about Departing French ambassador reflects on a turbulent time in Washington
