Meghan Markle And Prince Harry: Can the Royal Wedding Change Centuries of Racism and Classism in Britain?
Prince Harry and Meghan Markel meet wellwishers as they visit Reprezent 107.3FM on January 9, in London. The public has warmed to this refreshingly real royal-to-be, who seems to be having a positive influence on Harry. Samir Hussein/WireImage/Getty World On a sunny day this April, teenage girls from a local school were having a picnic in a park. I was on a bench near them, reading a book, until the noise got too much. The students were in uniform, easy with one another and bursting with adolescent enthusiasm. 3 states to hold referendums on weed legalization
Even in the Trump era, America’s green rush continues apace.Three states — Michigan, Utah and Oklahoma — will hold referendums in 2018 on the legalization of marijuana for recreational and medical use, continuing a nationwide trend of acceptance of the drug.Over the past decade, American support for marijuana legalization has steadily increased. Recent polling shows that the percentage of U.S. adults who support its legalization is now nearly twice what it was in 2000.In a January poll, the Pew Research Center found that roughly six in 10 Americans (61 percent) think cannabis should be legalized for recreational use by adults. Nearly two decades ago, only 31 percent of Americans supported making recreational weed legal. With this change of perspective came a series of changes to state laws. Colorado and Washington became the first states to legalize marijuana for recreational use in 2012; seven states and Washington, D.C., followed their lead. In addition, … [Read more...] about 3 states to hold referendums on weed legalization
Destined to burn: Safety rules give homes better chance in wildfires
In this March 19, 2019 photo, Oney and Donna Carrell stand near the ashes of her father's house in Paradise, Calif. Their property had two homes on it before the fire, but the only one to survive visible behind them was built to fire-resistant standards that went into effect in 2008. (Hector Amezcua/The Sacramento Bee via AP)In this photo taken March 19, 2019, Dawn Herr and her son Liam, 8, visit their home in Paradise, Calif., that survived the Camp Fire. The Herrs' home, built in 2010, was scorched and had smoke damage inside so the family is living temporarily in nearby Chico. The Herrs credit the home’s survival to strict building codes and to gravel that encircled the building and kept the flames back.
