Invasive species of feral pigs help to save Australia’s native crocodiles
An invasive species of feral pig could be helping to save Australia's native crocodiles. The saltwater crocodile has called Australia home for millions of years, but came close to extinction in the 1970s. Meanwhile, a species of feral pig arrived Down Under with European settlers in the 1700s - with recent estimates suggesting there are 24 million across the country. Feral pigs thrive in Australian wetlands and swamps - particularly in the north of the country - and have now spread across 40 per cent of Australia's land mass. Scientists blamed them for widespread habitat loss and for Australia having the world’s highest rate of mammal extinctions, the New York Times reports . But because they are the saltwater crocodiles' primary source of prey, the invasive pig species is being credited by some scientists for its increase in population. A tribe that saves farmers from rat menace
MACHILIPATNAM: If the weather is good with farmers without bringing any cyclones in November, it is the rat that eats the paddy grains and leaves the farmer in despair. Then it is the Yanadi tribe members who visit the fields in winter and rescue the farmers from the crop damage due to rat menace. Though rat-catching is not a profession of the Yanadi tribal people, they take it up as a seasonal livelihood activity in Krishna district. Rat-catching activity between November and December is likely to guarantee a few thousand rupees of income for each Yanadi tribal family. According to farmers, rats manage to settle in the fields expecting to collect paddy grain from November. “We should keep an eye on the weather conditions and the presence of rats in the fields since early November. The crop damage caused by the rat is heavy if we fail to drive it away from the field,” say farmers of Machilipatnam. In Krishna district, Diviseema region has a significant number of Yanadi tribal … [Read more...] about A tribe that saves farmers from rat menace
Advance Indian Standard Time by half an hour
Most Indians are not particularly worried about Indian Standard Time (IST), except for those who live in the Northeast where the sun rises around 4 a.m. in summer, and gets dark well before 4 p.m. in winter. Those of us who have to make overseas long distance calls and get into trouble with fractions are not even aware that we belong to a minority (three per cent) of regions whose standard times are fractional hours off from GMT. India spans longitudes of 68° at the western end and 98° at the eastern boundary and as there is a difference of one hour for every 15° of longitude, the two extremes differ by two hours. Thus, when the sun sets at 4 p.m. in Kohima, it sets at 6 p.m. in Porbunder. IST was fixed in 1906 midway at 82.5°, or 5/ hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Periodically, there are demands from the Northeast region for a separate time zone so that the clocks there may be advanced by an hour. There is a general misconception among those who worry about saving energy … [Read more...] about Advance Indian Standard Time by half an hour
Biden’s cancer research reduction act | Opinion
Tom Whitehead continually marvels at the life-saving power of CAR T-cell gene therapy, which rescued his daughter Emily from pediatric leukemia. "To look at her every day and see what a cure for cancer actually looks like––it's pretty amazing," he says. CAR T-cell therapy is a revolutionary treatment, years in the making. It's no surprise it was developed in the United States; more biomedical innovation occurs here than anywhere else in the world. But that's likely to change because of the newly passed Inflation Reduction Act. It's a simple case of incentives. Innovative medicines take about $2.6 billion over 10 to 15 years to complete. Pharmaceutical companies can only afford the trial and error of research and development (R&D) because the successes offset the price of the failures. But by empowering government bureaucrats to set artificial price caps on drugs, the Inflation Reduction Act will remove the incentive to produce innovative therapeutics for patients in … [Read more...] about Biden’s cancer research reduction act | Opinion
Couple sell everything they own to buy their dream trailer park
A British couple sold their house and bought an abandoned mobile home park for about $108,000 after falling in love with it on their first visit—in a bid to live mortgage-free. Jon and Emilie James, both 33, bought the old mobile home park near Llanelli, Wales, in the U.K., in June, and hope to bring it back to life. The couple decided they wanted to live debt-free and sold their first home and belongings for $159,500 through Instagram . After paying off their mortgage, they had $95,000 left and used another $13,000, approximately, in savings to pay for the mobile home park—leaving them with just $725 in the bank. The pair, who are both wedding photographers and videographers, decided they wanted to live a simple, mortgage-free life, and thought the mobile home park was the perfect fit. They moved onto the land eight weeks ago and are living in a small touring trailer—which they have also fixed up—while they renovate the park. Emilie James said they will do all the work … [Read more...] about Couple sell everything they own to buy their dream trailer park
Endorsement: Sydney Kamlager is the right choice for California state Senate
Under any circumstances, rookie California legislators have a steep learning curve to climb before they can hope to get much done in Sacramento. It takes a while to build the relationships and forge the alliances necessary to pass legislation, to hire a solid support staff and to carve out a policy niche. But the curve is steeper still for newbies joining the California Assembly or Senate midsession, without the support and camaraderie of a freshman class. That’s what the winner of the upcoming special election for the 30th state Senate District will face, and it is one reason — but only one of many — that the best choice in this race is Assemblywoman Sydney Kamlager (D-Los Angeles). As a member of the Assembly since 2018 and chair of the Los Angeles legislative delegation, Kamlager has already made crucial political connections and has proved her ability to work effectively within the labyrinthine apparatus of the California Legislature. We are confident that she will be able to … [Read more...] about Endorsement: Sydney Kamlager is the right choice for California state Senate
