EU Weekly Data Privacy Alert – 23 November 2015

· November 25, 2015 ·

EUGeneral Data Protection Regulation Discussion BroadcastThe Assistant European Data Protection Supervisor and the Rapporteur for the Data Protection Regulation have discussed the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). They noted that the timeline that had been set for the end of 2015 was nearing, but there was optimism that there could be political agreement in this time. There are still some core compromises needed: for example, in relation to the requirement for a mandatory data protection officer, the question of consent and other grounds for processing data (in particular legitimate interests for processing), but the position is moving toward a consensus. P&O Cruises cancels Dubai and Gulf voyages amid Iran tensions

· August 8, 2019 ·

LONDON (Reuters) – P&O Cruises has cancelled cruises around Dubai and the Arabian Gulf after Iran seized a British-flagged tanker in the region. Citing increased tensions, the company said it has cancelled its planned programme in the region from October until at least March next year and all guests be issued a full refund. Last month, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized a British tanker, Stena Impero, near the Strait of Hormuz for alleged marine violations. That came two weeks after Britain seized an Iranian oil tanker near Gibraltar, accusing it of violating sanctions on Syria. “As a British company flying the Red Ensign it is not advisable for us to maintain our planned Dubai and Arabian Gulf programme this winter season,” said Paul Ludlow, P&O Cruises president. “We have therefore taken the unusual step of withdrawing Oceana from the region for the upcoming season.” (Reporting by Andrew MacAskill; editing by Guy Faulconbridge) … [Read more...] about P&O Cruises cancels Dubai and Gulf voyages amid Iran tensions

Gavin Newsom secured the first of two slots in the November election to replace Jerry Brown as California's governor while Republican businessman John Cox was running a strong second on Tuesday night. The race is one of hundreds of contests across the state that could solidify Democratic dominance and reshape the fight for control of the US Congress. Democrats need to gain 23 districts nationally to flip the majority in the House of Representatives. Newsom, the former San Francisco mayor, was the first candidate to announce a bid for governor more than three years ago and was strongly favored for the top slot. He leaned heavily on his decision in 2004 to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in San Francisco, touching off years of debate over gay marriage in California and around the country.   With about 1.8 million votes counted he had 34 percent to Cox's 27 percent. … [Read more...] about Democratic lieutenant governor and Trump-backed Republican will face off in California governor’s race in November
