Just Two Percent of Swedish Political Candidates Live in High Migrant Populated Areas

August 22, 2018 by www.breitbart.com

Despite around five percent of Sweden’s total population living in migrant majority areas, just two percent of the candidates running for Sweden’s national election next month live in such areas. Using data from Statistics Sweden, a new report from Swedish broadcaster SVT shows that few political candidates, only two percent of regular candidates and one percent of “top candidates” actually live in migrant areas despite many on the left being the largest advocates for mass migration into the country. Many of the heavily migrant populated areas are also classified as  “vulnerable” or known as no-go areas like the Stockholm suburbs of Rinkeby, Husby and Tensta or the Malmö suburb of Rosengard due to high levels of crime and unemployment. Malmo, which has one of Sweden’s largest migrant-background populations, has an unemployment rate double the Swedish average . Trump’s FBI rants are “just like’ his Jan. 6 balancing act

August 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Former President Donald Trump 's rhetoric following the FBI 's search of his Mar-a-Lago residence is "just like" his language leading up to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, political experts say. On his Truth Social site on Sunday, Trump called the search of his Florida home a break-in, and a described it as "a sneak attack on democracy" that was conducted while he was away. The next day, Trump told Fox News he had offered help to the Justice Department with its ongoing investigation "because the temperature has to be brought down in the country." "If it isn't, terrible things are going to happen," the former president said, noting that there was "tremendous anger" in the United States as a result of "years of scams and witch hunts." His comments came after a man was shot dead while trying to breach an FBI office in Cincinnati, Ohio, last Thursday. The individual was believed to have been in Washington, D.C., in the days before the breach of the U.S. Capitol on … [Read more...] about Trump’s FBI rants are “just like’ his Jan. 6 balancing act

Trump says the new NFL rules on concussions are “ruining” football. Doctors have just proved him wrong

September 26, 2017 by www.newsweek.com

President Donald Trump's position on the NFL's new concussion protocol is clear. As a candidate, he said the NFL had " become soft " and referred to concussions as " a little ding on the head ." And last Friday, at a campaign rally in Alabama with Luther Strange, he said the NFL's new rules around concussions—like the one that penalizes teams whose players deliver hits with their helmets—were "ruining the game." But while concerns about the link between concussions and long-term brain damage, such as chronic traumatic encephalitis, are growing, there was no national baseline statistic for the number of teenagers who have already been exposed to one or more concussion—until now. A group of researchers from the University of Michigan found that one in five teens had been diagnosed with at least one concussion before leaving high school. They published their results in JAMA . The proportion was even higher among teens who played high-contact sports like football. One in … [Read more...] about Trump says the new NFL rules on concussions are “ruining” football. This new app detects concussions just by looking into your eyes

September 11, 2017 by www.newsweek.com

Updated | Concussions are difficult to detect because symptoms usually don't appear for hours, days, or even weeks after an injury. The lack of an official test to determine brain damage makes it a challenge to identify, which can often lead to underdiagnosis. To solve that problem, researchers at the University of Washington developed a smartphone app that can spot traumatic brain injury instantly by analyzing the eyes of someone with possible head trauma. In the study , to be presented September 13 at Ubicomp 2017 , the app " PupilScreen " diagnosed brain injuries with close to perfect accuracy. The researchers created a deep learning algorithm that can detect a telltale sign of brain injury: how pupils respond to light. By using an iPhone camera flash to stimulate the eyes and recording the pupil response in a three-second video, the researchers charted which pixels belonged to the pupil in each video frame. The app measures the changes in pupil size across these frames, … [Read more...] about This new app detects concussions just by looking into your eyes

The U.S. and China want influence in the Pacific. Here’s how to earn it | Opinion

August 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Vice President Kamala Harris recently announced a hefty new package to boost U.S. relations with the Pacific Islands—including plans to open three embassies, develop a comprehensive U.S. strategy for the region, and increase current funding to $600 million over the next decade. The announcement, delivered during a gathering of Pacific Island leaders, comes on the heels of a series of surprise meetings between Beijing and island officials that have left the U.S. worried . At a time when most foreign affairs coverage centers on Russia's war in Ukraine or President Joe Biden 's talks with Saudi Arabia, the Pacific is quietly and quickly emerging as a critical frontier for the next diplomatic tug-of-war between great powers. Both the U.S. and China have awakened to the economic and military potential of the strategically positioned islands—a potential long obscured by the islands' small size. This awakening is made apparent by Vice President Harris' promise to island … [Read more...] about The U.S. and China want influence in the Pacific. Here’s how to earn it | Opinion

Why Lake Mead water levels are rising again

August 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the U.S., has made national headlines recently due to its rapidly declining water levels. The reservoir across Nevada and Arizona is formed by the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, and provides electricity for hundreds of thousands of people living across the area. Due to the ongoing drought in the western United States, it has been hurtling towards dead pool level —which could be catastrophic. However, its water levels have now risen for the first time in three years. On July 27, the lake's water levels were at 1,040.71 feet—the lowest it has been since the 1930s, not long after it was first created. The area was then hit by the wettest monsoon season the Las Vegas Valley has seen in a decade. From July 27, rain was falling every day, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported. As of August 15, the lake's levels were at 1,042.29 feet, meaning water levels rose by 18 inches. Some areas saw more than a half inch of rain in just 10 minutes, … [Read more...] about Why Lake Mead water levels are rising again

Teenager gored by huge bison in South Dakota state park

August 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A 19-year-old tourist has been attacked by a bison while hiking in Custer State Park in South Dakota . The animal charged at Amelia Dean, from the U.K., on June 6, stopping before it hit her at full speed but still goring her with its horn. The force of the collision tossed Dean 15ft into the air, tearing the femoral artery in her left thigh and damaging the surrounding nerves as it dug its horn in, leaving her bleeding heavily. The bison was subsequently led away by a fellow hiker, who then called the emergency services. Dean was treated for her injuries, but has been left paralyzed from the knee down in her damaged leg. "I remember feeling the pressure on my hip. My hip being pushed back and I remember the sensation of flying in the air and going head over heels," Dean told local news station KOTA-TV in the hospital. "The bison stuck around and his hooves were right over my head. I remember them being like right by my head," she said. The largest land mammals in … [Read more...] about Teenager gored by huge bison in South Dakota state park

Trump and allies inciting base against FBI, Kinzinger warns

August 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

U.S. Representative Adam Kinzinger has blamed Donald Trump supporters for a sharp rise in violent threats against the FBI since its agents' search of the former president's Mar-a-Lago residence last week. "This is ridiculous," the Illinois Republican said on CNN , talking about the threats against FBI agents and law enforcement personnel posted on social media by Trump supporters. "It's ridiculous obviously for what the former president has done, in terms of saying 'This is an attack on my home, I did nothing wrong,' and of course, from the little bit we know, it seems like there's certainly good reasons for the FBI to have done what they did," the U.S. representative said. Asked by host Wolf Blitzer if he held Trump responsible for inciting his supporters, Kinzinger said: "Yes, absolutely, 100 percent." He added: "Members of Congress , Senators, any Republican elected official out there that rushes to be the first on television or the first to Twitter to … [Read more...] about Trump and allies inciting base against FBI, Kinzinger warns

Russian leaders flee city, abandon troops, amid counter-attack: Ukraine

August 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Russian commanders have fled the city of Kherson in southern Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials. Ukrainian forces using U.S.-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, have targeted key strategic bridges in recent weeks as part of a counteroffensive to reclaim the Russian-occupied Kherson region. They caused significant damage after striking the last working bridge over the Dnipro river into the city of Kherson, the Ukrainian army's Operational Command South announced on Saturday. Some Russian command staff has now begun leaving the city and moving to the river's right bank, as a result, said Nataliya Gumenyuk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian military's southern command. "There are recorded facts that after our strikes on the command posts of the occupying forces...their command staff very quickly moves in the direction 'beyond the bridge'—that is, to the left bank, so as not to be cut off in ways to move to a safer territory," Gumenyuk said at a news … [Read more...] about Russian leaders flee city, abandon troops, amid counter-attack: Ukraine

Matt Gaetz sparks outrage over hosting high school event: “Absolutely vile”

August 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Florida GOP Representative Matt Gaetz , who is being investigated by the Justice Department in connection with the sex trafficking of a 17-year-old girl, has sparked outrage after it emerged he would host a high school event in his state. Gaetz is due to appear Tuesday night at the annual Academy Night at Niceville High School, where students typically learn about how they can attend U.S. service (or military) academies. In a post on his Facebook page , Gaetz said: "The Academy Night is an opportunity for high school students to speak directly with Congressman Gaetz and Service Academy representatives to learn more about the process for gaining admission to the U.S. Service Academies and receiving a Congressional nomination (required for entry). The post added, "All high school students, JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps) groups, parents, principals, and teachers are invited to attend this event to learn more about entry to the U.S. Service Academies." But … [Read more...] about Matt Gaetz sparks outrage over hosting high school event: “Absolutely vile”
