Revamped plan to check air pollution in Delhi-NCR to come into force from October 1

August 7, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The revamped Graded Response Action Plan -- a set of anti-air pollution measures followed in Delhi and its vicinity according to the severity of the situation -- will come into force from October 1; 15 days before the usual date, according to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). The revised plan, which is part of a new policy formulated by the CAQM to abate air pollution in Delhi-NCR, focuses on proactive implementation of curbs based on forecasts and restrictions can be imposed up to three days in advance. Earlier, the authorities would implement the measures only after the PM2.5 and PM10 concentration touched a particular threshold.   The new plan also entails a ban on BS IV four-wheeler diesel vehicles, barring those engaged in essential services, in Delhi and the bordering districts of NCR if the air quality index (AQI) breaches the 450 mark. The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), notified by the Ministry of Environment and Forests in 2017, would come into force … [Read more...] about Revamped plan to check air pollution in Delhi-NCR to come into force from October 1

Kansas abortion vote threatens GOP plan to flip governorship

August 3, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Kansas Republicans have been eager to flip the governorship in this midterm election and the political backdrop of the red state had offered them hope that they'd be successful, but a wrench was thrown into the GOP's plans after a surprising abortion vote signaled that it may be harder than the party anticipated. With the GOP poised to take back the House and Senate , Republicans felt that Attorney General Derek Schmidt, who won the GOP nomination, would present a real challenge to Democratic Governor Laura Kelly in her bid for re-election. However, on Tuesday, Kansas voters blocked a Republican-led effort to further restrict or ban access to abortion, upholding a court ruling that determined the right to an abortion was granted by the state constitution. The ballot measure—which marked the first time voters would weigh in on the issue since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade — was opposed with a nearly 20-point margin. While the governor's race in Kansas remains … [Read more...] about Kansas abortion vote threatens GOP plan to flip governorship

Republicans plan to turn Democrats against Inflation Act

August 3, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Senate Democrats have finally found an opportunity to address climate change and health care through the sweeping tax reform bill they are trying to get onto President Joe Biden 's desk—but their Republican counterparts have a plan to derail the bill's passage. Republican senators are preparing to introduce a number of amendments and objections once the Senate parliamentarian finishes reviewing the Inflation Reduction Act, and are hoping those last-minute changes will slowly turn Democrats, one by one, against the final package. "We're going to try and walk through the amendment process. Get as many votes on amendments that make it more difficult for Democrats to be for it in the end," Senate Minority Whip John Thune told The Hill on Tuesday. Democrats are attempting to go around the GOP filibuster by using the budget reconciliation process, but it will require everyone in the party to fall in line. And Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema , one of the Democratic Party 's … [Read more...] about Republicans plan to turn Democrats against Inflation Act

How much do I get from California’s $9.5-billion gas tax relief plan? When will I get it?

June 27, 2022 by www.latimes.com

After months of debate , Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a budget deal for gas tax relief amid soaring prices at the pump. “California’s budget addresses the state’s most pressing needs, and prioritizes getting dollars back into the pockets of millions of Californians who are grappling with global inflation and rising prices of everything from gas to groceries,” Newsom, Senate President Pro Tem Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) said in a joint statement. The basics The plan calls for $9.5 billion in tax refunds to Californians, providing as much as $1,050 to families this fall. California Column: It’s time to stop spinning our wheels on gas price relief and head in a different direction Rather than trying to ease pain at the gas pump, the governor and lawmakers should focus on infrastructure projects, columnist George Skelton writes. New Zealand Unveils 1st National Plan to Adapt to Climate Change

August 4, 2022 by english.chosun.com

August 04, 2022 08:20 New Zealand released its first national plan Wednesday for dealing with the impact of global warming. The government in Wellington has warned that some communities could be abandoned as climate change triggers more intense storms and flooding. New Zealand's Climate Change minister, James Shaw, said severe weather events that had previously seemed unthinkable were "now happening at a pace and intensity we have never experienced before." He announced Wednesday the first long-term strategy to help New Zealand become more resilient and adaptable to a shifting climate. One possibility is that some homes near the coast could eventually be abandoned because of rising sea-levels. A guiding principle of the 200-page report was to prepare for adverse events before they occur, rather than after. Lifting properties above flood-prone land or boosting flood defenses are among dozens of potential options. Property developments in high-risk areas would not be … [Read more...] about New Zealand Unveils 1st National Plan to Adapt to Climate Change
