G7 Leaders Unveil USD 600 Billion Plan to Rival China’s Belt and Road Initiative in Developing Nations
US President Joe Biden and other G7 leaders have unveiled ambitious plans to mobilise USD 600 billion in funding by 2027 to deliver transparent and game-changing infrastructure projects in developing countries like India, in a move seen as a counter to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) unveiled on Sunday during the G7 Summit relaunches a scheme unveiled at last year’s G7 talks in England. President Biden said the plan would deliver returns for everyone. “Today, the nations of the G7 launched the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII),” Biden said. “Collectively, we aim to mobilise nearly USD 600 billion from the G7 by 2027 to invest in critical infrastructure that improves lives and delivers real gains for all of our people,” he tweeted. “I want to be clear the G7’s announcement of a new global infrastructure partnership isn’t aid or charity. It’s an investment that will deliver returns for … [Read more...] about G7 Leaders Unveil USD 600 Billion Plan to Rival China’s Belt and Road Initiative in Developing Nations
New Yorkers Celebrate ‘Victory for Citizen Rights’ After Court Blocks Foreign Nationals from Voting in NYC
New York officials are celebrating after the state’s Supreme Court struck down a Democrat-passed law that gave municipal voting rights to foreign nationals living in New York City. Last year, Democrats on the 51-member New York City Council approved a plan that allows more than 800,000 foreign nationals with green cards, visas, and work permits the opportunity to vote in citywide elections as long as they have resided in the city for at least 30 consecutive days. Lee Zeldin (R-NY), who is running for governor, praised the decision: Voting is a sacred right of U.S. citizens , and, … [Read more...] about New Yorkers Celebrate ‘Victory for Citizen Rights’ After Court Blocks Foreign Nationals from Voting in NYC

At the China border It is worrisome that China is upgrading its defence equipment on its border with India (Page 1, “China upgraded firepower on LAC”, June 27). That these developments in terms of a military infrastructure build-up have been going on ever since the stand-off between India and China confirms the point that China has been planning meticulously in terms of a permanency. One wonders where the talks that have been held so far on disengagement and de-escalation are heading if China is working to a plan. Though India has expanded its military capabilities and augmented its border defence infrastructure, it should be alert to face any eventualities. D. Sethuraman, Chennai If the report is true, it reveals the true intentions of Beijing. And if the shared interests of India and China are dominant in other spheres, it is not clear why no major headway has been made to de-escalate the situation on the border. Keeping the border issue alive will only lead to unintended … [Read more...] about Letters to the Editor — June 28, 2022
Health authorities gear up to tackle rise in COVID-19 cases
As COVID-19 cases are registering an upward trend over the past few days, the health authorities have stepped up preventive measures and strengthened the infrastructure for treating patients. Fresh cases began to increase from the second week of June in the district. It registers an average of five to seven cases a day. Eight patients tested positive for the virus in the district on Friday. With this, the number of patients, who are under treatment for COVID-19, has gone up to 34. A woman doctor of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) is among the patients under the treatment. She was said to have developed COVID-19 symptoms three days ago and subjected herself to the RT-PCR test. The results subsequently turned out to be positive and she opted for home treatment. The number is expected to rise further in the days to come as there is no curb on the movement of passengers from other districts that have reported a surge in the number of fresh cases over the past 10 … [Read more...] about Health authorities gear up to tackle rise in COVID-19 cases
Amma Unavagams losing sheen
Amma Unavagams in Tiruchi are losing steam due to laxity in their functioning and poor patronage. Customers feel that the canteens have lost its sheen over the years. Lack of adequate funds, infrastructure and poor management are some of the reasons attributed to the downfall of Amma canteens, according to the regulars and staff at the canteens. The self-help groups (SHGs) who run the canteens claim that there is less patronage now. “Lesser variety of food, failure to upgrade the menu, poor maintenance, infrastructural issues had led to a fall in patronage. People complain about lack of varieties, especially for breakfast and dinner,” said a staff in one of the canteens. According to Anbu, a regular customer, the canteen lacks cleanliness and is in a bad condition. "The dining space and tables are not cleaned regularly, and food is spilt all over. The canteens must be maintained properly.” Out of the 11 canteens, only a few get 300 to 400 customers a day, while the others have … [Read more...] about Amma Unavagams losing sheen
Republicans Condemn Verizon, ‘Big Telecom’ for Entertaining Democrat Censorship Demands
Big Tech is increasingly making it impossible for Republican politicians to communicate with their constituents. In addition to social media censorship, leftists are trying to censor at the level of emails, text messages, and telecommunications infrastructure. The Republican party is getting quicker at responding to political bias from tech companies. After studies showing that 70 percent of GOP text messages go straight to spam folders compared to just eight percent of Democratic messages, Republicans have introduced the Political BIAS Emails Act . There are also a number of Republican bills targeting social media censorship, at both the federal and state level. But leftists are already moving on to a new target: telecommunications infrastructure. Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg (MANDEL NGAN/AFP/Getty Images) Telecom companies have already had an impact on national politics, with Verizon and AT&T briefly shutting down Trump’s campaign texts during the 2020 … [Read more...] about Republicans Condemn Verizon, ‘Big Telecom’ for Entertaining Democrat Censorship Demands
From higher to hire education
Higher education policy planners and regulators are busy giving shape to the digital university, which was announced in the 2022-23 Union Budget. Though still on the drawing board, the digital university is expected to offer any number, kind, and type of course without limits on intake, in a hybrid or ‘physical plus digital’ mode. It proclaims to provide equitable access to quality higher education and employability-enhancing skill development programmes to all. Recent developments In the interim, the University Grants Commission has relaxed the norms and standards for setting up open universities. In particular, land requirement has been reduced from 40 acres to just five acres. This is likely to open the floodgates for private open universities. Simultaneously, more universities are being enabled to offer courses in the distance, open and online mode, mostly in collaboration with EdTech startups and unicorns. Some have already outsourced the delivery of their courses to such … [Read more...] about From higher to hire education
Poor May be Paid to not Use Electricity as Blackout Fears Grow
Those struggling with the ongoing cost of living crisis may be paid to not use energy at all in the hopes of averting rolling blackouts. Millions of households in Britain may end up being given the opportunity to be paid not to use electricity at certain times. The plan is another reported method authorities in the UK are considering to avert the possibility of rolling blackouts this winter, an eventuality described as being a real possibility as a result of energy shortages brought about by European overreliance on Russian gas exports. According to a report by The Times , the plan proposed by the National Grid would allow households with smart meters to receive payment for dropping their usage during peak times, such as when people often cook, clean and do laundry. Payments could consist of up to £6 (~$7.40) per kilowatt-hour saved, with one trial run of the scheme seemingly rendering some positive results. One element of the scheme that does raise eyebrows is how it … [Read more...] about Poor May be Paid to not Use Electricity as Blackout Fears Grow
Louisiana and Utah trigger laws banning abortions temporarily blocked by courts
Judges in Louisiana and Utah on Monday temporarily blocked prohibitions on abortion in their states following last week's U.S. Supreme Court ruling that ends a national right to the procedure. The high court on Friday overturned Roe v. Wade , which for nearly 50 years had granted women the constitutional right to an abortion. More than a dozen states set so-called trigger laws which were written to take immediate effect, banning or severely limiting abortions, in the event Roe v. Wade was overturned. A Louisiana judge on Monday issued a temporary restraining order against the state from enforcing its ban on abortions, leading to the immediate resumption of the procedure. Orleans Parish Civil District Court Judge Robin Giarrusso granted the request of plaintiffs Hope Medical Group For Women and Medical Students for Choice.
