Staff and students celebrating Jo Richardson Community School being awarded Silver in the School of the Year Pearson Teaching Awards. Jo Richardson Community School bagged a Pearson Teaching Awards’ Silver prize in the School of the Year ‘Making a difference’ category. Selected from thousands of applicants, the co-ed secondary in Gale Street was one of 65 winners celebrated on Friday, ‘Thank A Teacher Day’, for the awards’ 20th anniversary. The group, which is embarking on a restructuring, reported a 1% rise in underlying revenues in the period, with growth in North America making up for declines elsewhere. Pearson said its “cost efficiency programme” is on track to deliver £300 million of annualised savings by 2020. North American revenues grew 3% and sales in its core unit, which incudes the UK, Australia and Italy, rose 6%. In the UK, the group has inked a partnership with the University of Sussex to launch a programme of postgraduate online degrees from September. A DEVASTATING fire which ripped through a family home in Salford left four children dead and their mother fighting for her life in hospital. A court was told that on Monday, December 11, a mid-terraced family home went up in flames after a flammable liquid was believed to have been poured through the letterbox. Shortly before 5am, emergency services scrambled Jackson Street in Walkden, to reports of a house fire. The killer is believed to have lit fires that targeted the chimney, door and ground-floor window, before setting both floors alight. It is thought that scaffolding outside the property may have been used to pour petrol down the chimney. A mother who suffered horrific burns in a house fire in December has recently been told that none of her four children survived. A MUM left in a coma following a blaze at her home that killed her four kids is now awake and has been told of their deaths. Michelle Pearson lost 15-year-old daughter Demi, her brother Brandon, eight, and sisters Lacie, seven, and Lia, three, in the inferno at her home in Walkden, Greater Manchester, in December. The 35-year-old has been recovering in hospital ever since, but it is only in the last fortnight that doctors were able to explain the devastating news.
