Adding to the misery of long-term sufferers of COVID-19 already plagued by fatigue and brain fog, researchers have now noted low sex drive, hair loss, and erectile dysfunction. A study published in the journal Nature Medicine by scientists from the University of Birmingham in England examined the anonymized medical records of more than 2 million people in the U.K. They found a much wider range of symptoms of COVID-19 infection than previously thought. In patients with a primary care record of COVID-19 infection, they found the virus was associated with 62 symptoms much more frequently twelve weeks after sufferers' initial infection than those who had not contracted the virus. British health authorities have defined long COVID-19 as having symptoms lasting beyond 12 weeks after initial infection. The data set was collected during the first phase of the pandemic between January 2020 and April 2021 and included more than 480,000 patients with prior infection, as well as 1.9 … [Read more...] about Erectile dysfunction, lower sex drive side effects of long COVID-19: study

A New Study Describes How COVID-19 Damages The Brain
A study shows how SARS-COV-2 infects brain cells called astrocytes, causing structural changes in the brain. Infection with SARS-CoV-2 can cause brain alterations and neurocognitive dysfunction, particularly in long COVID-19 syndrome, but the underlying mechanisms are elusive. Daniel Martins-de-Souza and colleagues used MRI to compare brain structure in 81 study participants recovering from a mild COVID-19 infection and 81 healthy individuals. The authors found that the former group exhibited reduced cortical thickness, which was correlated with cognitive impairments and symptoms such as anxiety and depression. The authors analyzed brain samples from 26 people who had died of COVID-19, finding that samples from five of these individuals exhibited tissue damage. Further analysis of damaged brain samples revealed that astrocytes, which are brain cells that sustain neuronal metabolism, were particularly likely to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 and that the virus enters these cells … [Read more...] about A New Study Describes How COVID-19 Damages The Brain
Go For More Tests, Faster Vaccination: Worried by Uptick in Covid-19 Graph, Centre’s Advisory to Delhi, 6 States
Ramp up testing, promote Covid-appropriate behaviour and increase the pace of vaccination, the Centre has told Delhi and six states amid a spike in coronavirus cases, especially ahead of the festive season. Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, in a letter to Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, said upcoming festivals and mass congregations in different parts of the country may potentially facilitate transmission of infectious diseases, including Covid-19. “It is critical to ensure adequate testing is undertaken in all the districts of the state while maintaining the recommended share of RT-PCR and antigen tests. The state must also closely monitor districts reporting higher cases, positivity rates and clusters to prevent further spread of infection and effective case management,” he stressed in the letter dated August 5. In his letter to Delhi, Bhushan said the national capital has been reporting high average daily new cases (811 cases) … [Read more...] about Go For More Tests, Faster Vaccination: Worried by Uptick in Covid-19 Graph, Centre’s Advisory to Delhi, 6 States

How many animals have had COVID-19? New tracker offers some clues
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 2 Since the start of the pandemic, there have been several reports of coronavirus infections among cats, dogs and other animals. But until now, there was limited data on how widespread COVID-19 is in the animal kingdom. A new global database may help provide some clues. So far, there have been 704 confirmed cases in animals, in 27 different species from 39 countries, according to the first dashboard of its kind from a team of Austrian researchers who worked with the Wildlife Conservation society that compiles the tally of COVID cases among critters. Among the 582 outbreaks tracked in the animal world, the disease fatality rate so far has been close to 3%, with most symptoms among animals presenting as respiratory, gastrointestinal or behavioral issues, according to the data. While the researchers say it is impossible to know the true impact of the coronavirus in the wild, the … [Read more...] about How many animals have had COVID-19? New tracker offers some clues
Research Says Universal Vaccination Is Required To Stop Future COVID-19 Waves
Researchers at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health who analysed the transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 variants have discovered shared traits linked to transmissibility and immune evasion. Their findings highlight the need for more proactive planning and preparedness for future variants of concern (VOCs), including the development of a universal vaccine that can block SARS-CoV-2 infection as well as prevent severe disease. As with many places, by February 2022, South Africa had experienced four distinct pandemic waves caused by the original (or ancestral) SARS-CoV-2 virus and three VOCs–Beta, Delta and Omicron. “These repeated pandemic waves have been driven by new VOCs that erode prior immunity from either infection or vaccination, increase transmissibility or a combination of both,” explains study author Wan Yang, PhD, assistant professor of epidemiology at Columbia Mailman School. “Although laboratory and field studies provide insights into variant … [Read more...] about Research Says Universal Vaccination Is Required To Stop Future COVID-19 Waves
