Liverpool’s 10 best bargain transfers since winning the 2005 Champions League
As Liverpool prepare to take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final, they'll be well aware their run to Paris wouldn't have been possible without the help of some bargain buys. For all the importance of big-money stars like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, the Reds' success goes beyond that. Elon Musk’s Starlink gets nod to provide Internet in Philippines
Elon Musk’s Starlink has been authorised to provide satellite Internet services in the Philippines, paving the way for the SpaceX unit’s expansion to South-East Asia. Shares of possible partners rose. The Philippine National Telecommunications Commission said it approved Starlink’s registration as a value-added service provider, according to a statement on May 27. This would allow Starlink to directly access satellite systems, and to build and operate broadband facilities. The Philippines will be the first country in South-East Asia to offer Starlink’s high speed, low latency satellite Internet service, the NTC said. Starlink’s entry will benefit under-served areas in the Philippines, NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba said in the statement. The government last year eased access to satellite technology to expand Internet connectivity in the archipelago. Transpacific Broadband Group International Inc, which said in October it’s looking to partner with Starlink, jumped as much as … [Read more...] about Elon Musk’s Starlink gets nod to provide Internet in Philippines
‘Kuttavum Shikshayum’ film review: Accurate portrayal of a police probe, minus the thrills
Kuttavum Sikshayum Starring: Asif Ali, Alencier, Sunny Wayne, Sharafuddin, Senthil Krishna Direction: Rajeev Ravi Sticking strictly to a narrative, without ever taking the possible tangents, and forgetting about all the flashbacks, takes immense discipline and courage. In Kuttavum Shikshayum , the narrative begins from a crime and progresses through the investigation, without straying into the many possibilities that lay beckoning on either side. That becomes the film’s strength, but not fully exploiting this core material, paves the way for its undoing. Following a jewellery store heist in Idukki district, Circle Inspector Sajan Philip (Asif Ali) is tasked with the challenge of nabbing the suspects. After zeroing in on the initial leads, the police team realise that the suspects all hail from a north Indian village. A five-member police team led by Philip heads to the village, but getting the criminals out from their lair is easier said than done. Owing to Rajeev Ravi’s … [Read more...] about ‘Kuttavum Shikshayum’ film review: Accurate portrayal of a police probe, minus the thrills
Andhra Pradesh: Naidu exhorts people to get rid of ‘inept’ YSRCP government
The annual Mahanadu of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) began at Manduvaripalem villlage, near here, on Friday with a call by its national president N. Chandrababu Naidu to “get rid of the anti-people Jagan Mohan Reddy government as and when elections are conducted.” Paying floral tributes to party founder N.T. Rama Rao to mark his year-long birth centenary celebrations, Mr. Naidu set the tone for a brain-storming delegates’ session of the political conclave by giving the party cadre the slogan, “Quit Jagan, save Andhra Pradesh.” Mid-term polls Preparing the party cadre for an “imminent mid-term election” in the State, Mr. Naidu underscored the “historic necessity” for the TDP to return to power to save the “debt-ridden State” as its borrowings had touched an “unsustainable ₹8,00,000 crore.” Launching a blistering attack on the YSRCP government for its “misrule and letting loose repression in the State in the last three years by misusing the police,” Mr. Naidu made it clear that … [Read more...] about Andhra Pradesh: Naidu exhorts people to get rid of ‘inept’ YSRCP government
A music concert with tribespeople, and so much more
The Irulas of Palakkad, like other tribal people, have a song for every season of life from birth to death and everything in between. The Kattunayakans also sing about their life in the forest and who they are. “Songs are a part of their lives,” says Sruthin Lal, co-founder of Archival and Research Project (ARPO), a not-for-profit organisation that works toward preserving and educating Kerala’s heritage via storytelling. ARPO will showcase the music of these two tribes on May 29 at ‘ARPO Earthlore’, a tribal music concert, scheduled to be held at Bolgatty Palace in the city. Sruthin sees the maiden event as an introduction to the music of indigenous people, paving the way for subsequent editions. Tentative plans include turning this into a half-yearly event. The concert grew out of an idea that included archiving the songs of the tribal people, and down the line, helping them acquire intellectual property rights. “We want to introduce people to the potential of this music. Tribal … [Read more...] about A music concert with tribespeople, and so much more
‘Cannabis king’ sentenced to 22 months in prison for bribing San Luis Obispo politician
Helios Dayspring had one goal: build a cannabis empire that, in his words, would be “too big to fail.” But as he acquired hundreds of acres of land to grow the product and opened storefronts along California’s Central Coast to sell it, Dayspring’s ambition led him to bribery. His target was a county supervisor who, in exchange for cash and other perks, pushed measures that advanced the interests of his secret benefactor and tried to stifle those that didn’t. After a lengthy hearing Friday, U.S. District Judge André Birotte Jr. sentenced Dayspring to 22 months in prison for bribing a public official and filing a false tax return. “What’s troubling about this case is it goes to the heart of government process,” Birotte said, noting that just a few blocks from the courthouse in downtown Los Angeles, several council members at City Hall have been accused of taking bribes. Advertisement In Dayspring’s case, the bribes paid and favors performed have left a jaded public … [Read more...] about ‘Cannabis king’ sentenced to 22 months in prison for bribing San Luis Obispo politician
The Playacting Over Masks Really Needed to End
Sign up for Tom’s newsletter, Peacefield, here. The U.S.-government mandate requiring mask wearing on transportation is now dead, and it was killed in the worst way possible. A judge deemed “not qualified” by the American Bar Association wrote a muddled decision that invalidated a regulation hated by the president who picked her, while overriding the authority of the executive branch and its expert advisers to make policy. And yet, Federal District Judge Kathryn Mizelle just did President Joe Biden a favor. She got him out from under a policy that served little purpose. His administration will challenge the Trump-appointed jurist’s ruling—and it should, not to reimpose the mandate, but to preserve the power of the executive branch to issue national health regulations when needed. But Biden should be glad, as the airlines clearly are, that the masking theater is over. Mask mandates were a stopgap, an emergency safety measure imposed by governments with few other options to … [Read more...] about The Playacting Over Masks Really Needed to End
Donald Trump and the Rise of Plutocracy
Of the things Donald Trump has said since he began hinting at a presidential candidacy, the one that most requires challenging is his assertion that people keep asking him to run. Journalists are vigilant defenders of truth when the subject is President Obama's birthplace or OPEC prices. They are credulous when it comes to explaining populist movements. They assume the impetus always comes from the demand side. People are "fed up"! There is an "anti-incumbent sentiment" in the air! Such demand-side sentiments can explain a lot—but not why certain members of the public might wish to be governed by a billionaire yahoo. For that, it is just as important to look at the supply side. Trump's candidacy comes from a sociological fact—the steady rise of plutocracy over the last quarter century—as well as a public sentiment. The truth is not universally enough acknowledged that a man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of political influence. Diversifying one's portfolio to include … [Read more...] about Donald Trump and the Rise of Plutocracy
