CIA director Gina Haspel, who has to date maintained among the lowest profiles of the Trump administration's cabinet members, is bucking an incipient trend set by previous directors who engaged more frequently with the press, noted two former CIA deputy directors who served during the Obama administration. Maintaining low visibility is characteristic for Haspel, a former clandestine operations officer, but it's also likely strategic and, on balance, in the interest of the agency, the two former officials said."She's not somebody who, I think, relishes the spotlight in that kind of way," said Avril Haines, who served as the CIA's deputy director from 2013 to 2015. "I think that's probably a good choice for her right now.""I think she has an extraordinarily hard job, in part – I think there's no reason to sugarcoat this – in part, because the president is not a serious consumer of intelligence, if he consumes it at all," said David Cohen, who served as former CIA director … [Read more...] about Former top CIA officials weigh merits of speaking out for past and present CIA leaders

0 Have your say In the 17th century, being British only had meaning as a colonial identity, writes Mark A Hutchinson. The genealogy of the term British reveals a fragile and contested historical identity – something Brexit has thrown into stark relief. In the 17th century, being British only had meaning as a colonial identity, when it was used to denote the projection of English and Scottish interests overseas. When the term was used within the geographical confines of Great Britain – and later in Great Britain and Ireland – its common use was in reference to the British government or the British constitution.Understanding the genealogy of the term British can help make sense of the lack of consensus which has emerged over Brexit. After all, the British empire no longer exists and the British government is instead managing a declining British presence worldwide. Alongside the devolution of powers within the UK, it’s unclear what the term … [Read more...] about Brexit paradox revealed by imperial past of word ‘British’ – Mark A Hutchinson

close Video Napolitano: Is the Investigation of Pres Trump Legitimate? Judge Andrew Napolitano asks and answers: Is the Investigation of President Trump Legitimate? This past weekend, President Donald Trump and the most visible member of his legal team, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, fired up their campaign against special counsel Robert Mueller. They attacked people at the Department of Justice whom Trump appointed. They smeared career DOJ lawyers and FBI agents by offering allegations without showing any supporting evidence. And they purported to challenge the legitimacy of Mueller's office itself. The legitimacy question is an opinion Giuliani offered six times to my colleague Bill Hemmer on "Fox News Sunday." Surely, Giuliani is entitled to any opinion on any matter, but he must know that his illegitimacy opinion is baseless. Mueller's work, though a constant irritant to Trump, is quite legitimate. It is authorized by the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, … [Read more...] about Judge Andrew Napolitano: Is the investigation of President Trump legitimate?
The Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers are the two most politically left-wing teams in all of the NBA, and now, they face each other again after possibly their most “woke” year ever. On one side of the court are the Golden State Warriors whose players and coach Steve Kerr have spent the past two years slamming Republicans and President Donald Trump at every opportunity. The winners of last year’s NBA championship are so anti-Trump that the president disinvited them from the White House to celebrate their big win. Instead the team visited the African American Museum in Washington, DC. But the White House visit kerfuffle is far from the only incident. The team has a long history of left-wing political activism. In February, for instance, Warriors forward Kevin Durant called Fox News Host Laura Ingraham a racist, for telling NBA star LeBron James to “shut up and dribble.” At that same time, Durant added that President Donald Trump’s … [Read more...] about Tale of Woke: NBA Finals Pit Most Radical Liberals in Sports Against Each Other
