The head of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) has called on Grant Shapps to “tone down the rhetoric and get on with his job” in order to settle the bitter dispute over jobs, pay and conditions. Train services have been crippled again on Saturday as thousands of RMT members stage the third 24-hour strike this week. RMT general secretary Mick Lynch joined workers on a picket line outside Euston Station in central London on Saturday morning. Strikers held up RMT banners and draped flags over the barrier which read: “Defend Rail Jobs Pay Conditions”, while the occasional driver would honk their vehicle’s horn as they drove past. Recommended By-elections show voters have run out of patience with Boris Johnson Speaking to the PA news agency, Mr Lynch called on the Transport Secretary to engage in “constructive” talks with the unions amid little sign of a breakthrough in the deadlocked row. It comes after Mr Shapps said the union’s … [Read more...] about RMT boss calls on Shapps to ‘tone down the rhetoric and get on with his job’

Protests and celebrations as Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade: Live updates
Protests continued in cities across the country Saturday after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that had guaranteed the right to abortion in the United States. As states began to enact abortion bans and clinics stopped offering the procedure, large crowds gathered in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, some jubilant, others dismayed at the decision that stripped away women’s constitutional right to abortion. Both sides predicted the fight over abortion would continue. Key highlights: President Joe Biden called it a “sad day” for the U.S. and said it would be up to voters in November to select candidates who would protect a host of rights — not just abortion but also marriage equality and the right to contraception. Centrist Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, suggested they were misled by Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, two key votes in the decision to overturn Roe. US Overturns Roe v Wade: Protesters Raise their Pitch as Conservative States Ban Abortions
Abortion rights supporters prepared to fan out across America Saturday for a second day of protest against the Supreme Court’s thunderbolt ruling, as state after conservative state moved swiftly to ban the procedure. Deeply polarised America woke up to a new level of division: between states that will now or soon deny the right to abortion, enshrined for 50 years, and those that still allow it. Dozens of new protests were planned Saturday from coast to coast, a day after demonstrations across the country that were largely peaceful — although police fired tear gas on protesters in Phoenix, Arizona and police in riot gear moved to disperse a hard core of protesters in downtown Los Angeles. Fuelling the mobilisation, many fear that the Supreme Court, with a clear conservative majority made possible by Donald Trump, might now set its sights on rights like same-sex marriage and contraception. At least eight right-leaning states imposed immediate abortion bans — with a similar number … [Read more...] about US Overturns Roe v Wade: Protesters Raise their Pitch as Conservative States Ban Abortions
Supreme Court abortion ruling touches off second day of raucous protests nationwide
WASHINGTON - There appeared to be no let-up Saturday as Americans angered by the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade hit the streets for a second day of mass protests. From Washington, D.C., where the conservatives on the court Friday swept aside a half-century of precedent to do away with the law, all the way to the West Coast, there were angry, raucous protests against a ruling that almost immediately made access to abortions all-but-impossible in half the country. Those protests were, at times, met with counter-protests by anti-abortion activists elated by the ruling and determined to stop abortions from happening everywhere in the country. Outside the Supreme Court building, a small-but-growing group of protesters chanting "Women's rights are human rights" confronted a preacher who had waded into the mix and appeared to be trying to drown them out. "Listen to me, our religious convictions inform everything we do," the Rev. Jonathan Tremaine Thomas said. … [Read more...] about Supreme Court abortion ruling touches off second day of raucous protests nationwide
Loewe presents a dystopian future at Paris Fashion Week
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 15 PARIS (AP) — Loewe thrust Paris Fashion Week into a bleak and dystopian vision of the future on Saturday -- turning its runway into a dead space where nature and animal life only existed to be harnessed and exploited by humankind. A sanitized white wall descended onto a bare deck as models walked by robotically, bathed in misty white light. Here are some highlights of spring-summer 2023 menswear collections: LOEWE'S NATURE MORTE Models wore plates of television screens showing deep water fish in the ocean, and plasma screen visors beamed out growing chrysanthemums. The only place that grass grew in designer Jonathan Anderson’s fashion dystopia was literally out of shoes, where green blades quivered and flapped surreally as the automatons filed by. The British designer used the remarkable set and concept not … [Read more...] about Loewe presents a dystopian future at Paris Fashion Week
Michelin-starred restaurant Frances returns to San Francisco, but with a conflicting twist
Frances is officially back, according to Hoodline . The Michelin-starred restaurant from acclaimed chef Melissa Perello re-opened on Thursday, June 23, but there was a major change to the format — there is no longer an a la carte menu. Admirers of the California cuisine restaurant, located at 3870 17th Street, will remember classic bites such as the applewood smoked bacon beignets: little bite-sized balls with a fried crust but soft, chewy bite-sized balls that were best when dipped in the maple chive creme fraiche. Another favorite was the uber-popular Lumberjack Cake dessert — a coconut-sweetened, dense hunk of dark-brown flour and butter with chopped peaches, Medjool dates and often apricot slices folded in. As of now, though, neither can be found on the new prix fixe menu. In September 2021, Perello started a pop-up series out of the Frances kitchen, dubbed the FXMP dinner series (Frances x Melissa Perello), which also had a prix fixe menu format. It marked the first … [Read more...] about Michelin-starred restaurant Frances returns to San Francisco, but with a conflicting twist
Pope hails families, blasts ‘culture of waste’ after Roe
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 15 ROME (AP) — Pope Francis celebrated families Saturday and urged them to shun “selfish” decisions that are indifferent to life as he closed out a big Vatican rally a day after the U.S. Supreme Court ended constitutional protections for abortion. Francis didn’t refer to the ruling or explicitly mention abortion in his homily. But he used the buzzwords he has throughout his papacy about the need to defend families and to condemn a “culture of waste” that he believes is behind the societal acceptance of abortion. “Let us not allow the family to be poisoned by the toxins of selfishness, individualism, today's culture of indifference and waste, and as a result lose its very DNA, which is the spirit of welcoming and service,” he said. The pope, noting that some couples allow their fears and anxieties to “thwart the … [Read more...] about Pope hails families, blasts ‘culture of waste’ after Roe
Boris Johnson ‘planned to build £150,000 treehouse for son Wilf’ at Chequers
Boris Johnson planned to build a £150,000 treehouse for his son Wilf at Chequers, it has been reported. The prime minister and his wife Carrie wanted to build the treehouse during autumn 2020 but had to pull the plug after it raised security concerns. The treehouse's design included bulletproof glass but could be seen by the roadside, prompting police to warn the PM about the risks involved. There were discussions about having Lord Brownlow, a Tory donor ranked the 521st richest person in the UK last year, fund the project, with plans for the treehouse drawn up for the country retreat, it has been reported. Some No10 aides warned Mr Johnson against the project due to the cost and the matter of it being more expensive than some homes in many parts of the UK. Prime Minister Boris Johnson with Carrie, their son Wilfred and dog Dilyn “He was told it would look terrible,” a government source told The Times . The newspaper reports that it is unclear whether the Chequers … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson ‘planned to build £150,000 treehouse for son Wilf’ at Chequers
‘India, Russia should have direct trade and investment agreements’
As Russia’s access to its traditional markets of exports and imports are hugely limited following its Ukraine invasion and the subsequent sanctions, Moscow is looking to develop new trade and investment relations with partners in Asia, including India, China and Southeast Asian countries, said Russian aluminium tycoon Oleg Deripaska. Speaking on the sidelines of 25th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), also known as the ‘Russian Davos’, Mr. Deripaska, founder of RUSAL, one of the world’s largest aluminium producers, said there’s an understanding that “the new normal” would fundamentally change Russia’s economic reality. To facilitate such a shift, he said, Russia needed to create the same kind of infrastructure as it had built over the 12 years, from 1991 to 2003, with Europe. This includes setting up new logistics routes and related infrastructure, customs procedures, trade agreements, infrastructure for settlements, gaining access to debt capital markets and … [Read more...] about ‘India, Russia should have direct trade and investment agreements’
