Five Chinese state-owned companies to delist from NYSE amid U.S. tensions
Five Chinese state-owned companies, including oil giant Sinopec and China Life Insurance, said on Friday they would delist from the New York Stock Exchange, amid economic and diplomatic tensions with the United States. The companies, which also include Aluminium Corporation of China (Chalco), PetroChina and Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co, each said that they would apply to delist their American Depository Shares this month. The five, which in May were flagged by the U.S. securities regulator as failing to meet its auditing standards, will keep their listings in Hong Kong and mainland Chinese markets. Beijing and Washington are in talks to resolve a long-running audit dispute that could see Chinese companies banned from U.S. exchanges if they do not comply with U.S. rules. Washington has long demanded complete access to the books of U.S.-listed Chinese companies, but Beijing bars foreign inspection of audit documents from local accounting firms, citing national security … [Read more...] about Five Chinese state-owned companies to delist from NYSE amid U.S. tensions

Experts: Swedish Plan to Break Up Migrant Ghettos Is ‘State Racism’
Swedish academics have denounced a proposal by a government minister to limit the number of non-Scandinavian residents in neighbourhoods as “state racism.” Ten academics largely comprised of professors from various Swedish universities slammed the proposal made by Minister for Integration Anders Ygeman, who said he would support a policy to limit the number of non-Scandinavian or “non-Nordic” residents in areas so they did not become a majority. “The proposal is difficult to take seriously, but at the same time frightening. It brings to mind the apartheid system and state racism that would cement and legitimise ethnic divisions instead of fighting them,” the experts said in an opinion article for the newspaper Expressen . The experts added that the policy of separating people into “Nordic” and “non-Nordic” would reinforce segregation, rather than combat it. “It is difficult to see how anyone can believe that such a division of the population can be conducive to … [Read more...] about Experts: Swedish Plan to Break Up Migrant Ghettos Is ‘State Racism’
Editor Daily Rundown: Mask Confusion
MASK CONFUSION… NY TIMES… DAVID LEONHARDT: A Confusing Message — The C.D.C. recommends indoor masking for the vaccinated, but only in some places. As you can see, most of the Northeast and upper Midwest, as well as much of the West, have only “moderate” or “low” transmission. If that stays true, vaccinated residents in those places can generally remain unmasked, the C.D.C. says. […] Breakthrough infections among the vaccinated appear to be only a modest reason that the number of new cases has been rising, as I explained in Monday’s newsletter. When vaccinated people do get the virus, they are less likely to pass it on to others — and much less likely to get very sick. […] The country was polarized long before Covid. But the C.D.C. has not maximized its chances of being heard, either. That’s the communication problem I mentioned above. Its announcement of the new guidelines was both vague and technical, making it hard for many nonexperts to understand. The agency … [Read more...] about Editor Daily Rundown: Mask Confusion

Making ‘Separate Country’ Comment, DMK’s A Raja Cites Periyar, But He Dumped The Dream 66 Yrs Ago
DMK, the ruling party of Tamil Nadu, has raised a secessionist demand if the state is not given autonomy. Party MP A Raja, in the presence of DMK president and Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin , in fact, warned the Centre to give Tamil Nadu more rights or else the next stage would be a battle for separate nationhood. As per PTI, Raja said, “I am telling Amit Shah and the Prime Minister with utmost humility, I implore you in the presence of (our) leaders on the dais, our chief minister is journeying on the path of Anna (CN Annadurai, former CM and DMK founder), do not push us on the path of Periyar. Do not make us seek a separate country. Give state autonomy and we will not rest till then.” According to Raja, the DMK had so far kept aside the demand for a separate nation, as envisioned by Erode Venkatappa Ramasamy, popularly known as Periyar, the father of the Dravidian movement, but the party’s patience is now running out. Monsoon Musings: Tamil Nadu Gets about 95% Excess Rains, But Indo-Gangetic Plains Still Parched
Tamil Nadu has thrown a surprise this monsoon season with surplus rainfall exceeding 95% of its long-period average, and a huge inflow into the reservoirs filling most of them to the brim. “Tamil Nadu has not received such a high amount of rain in June-July at least during the last three years. The last time when the southwest monsoon was surplus for the state was perhaps in 2018. This time, especially the interior districts, including those adjacent to the Western Ghats, have witnessed above-normal rains every day since mid-July, while it was still less for coastal areas,” the head of IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, S Balachandran, told News18. While the southwest monsoon is known to exhibit such inter-annual variations, the senior meteorologist said, there are always the subsystems whose interplay decides how the monsoon performs. “The state mostly relies on northeast monsoon starting October onwards for rains, but it is good that the southwest monsoon too has been … [Read more...] about Monsoon Musings: Tamil Nadu Gets about 95% Excess Rains, But Indo-Gangetic Plains Still Parched
‘Inaccuracies’: Florida School Investigates Teacher’s Claims About MLK Poster Being Removed From Classroom
Escambia County public school concluded its investigation on teacher Michael James after he resigned stating photos of Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King Jr. were removed from his classroom. “The Behavior Analyst informed Mr. James the bulletin board directly behind his teaching area needed to be dedicated to state-required curricular materials he would need to engage this specific group of students in their daily learning and development activities, as they were seated at his teaching table with him,” the district statement obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation said. James says he knew some students would not be able to read the posters but intended to read and teach the students about the pictured leaders. A Florida school district’s investigation concluded that a teacher’s claims about photos of Martin Luther King Jr. and Harriet Tubman being removed from his classroom because they weren’t “age appropriate,” were “inaccurate,” according to the district … [Read more...] about ‘Inaccuracies’: Florida School Investigates Teacher’s Claims About MLK Poster Being Removed From Classroom
