The Avalanche begins its Western Conference semifinal playoff series against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night at Ball Arena. Colorado coach Jared Bednar, per usual, declined to disclose his Game 1 lineup after the morning skate. But the Avs are 100% healthy and, based on five practices since they completed a first-round over Nashville eight days ago, we have a good idea. Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access
One day after the draft Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe vs. Wade leaked, Pennsylvania Democrat Josh Shapiro declared that his bid to become governor was the only thing preventing Republicans from restricting abortion access in the state. “The next governor is going to have a bill on their desk that will restrict or outlaw abortion rights, and they will have a decision as to whether to sign it or veto it,” he told reporters this month. “I will, of course, veto it. My opponents would sign it.” If the landmark 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision guaranteeing protection of abortion rights is overturned, abortion policy will be set by states, where Republicans hold the majority of legislatures and governorships. But in a handful of states, particularly Pennsylvania and Kansas, the winner of the November gubernatorial races could have a significant impact, vetoing or signing into law abortion legislation that would affect millions of people of reproductive age both in their … [Read more...] about Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access
Making judiciary more transparent
The question of judicial appointments has reached centre stage. The new government has started a process of consultation in relation to two Bills — the Constitution Amendment Bill and the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill. The bills were an attempt by the previous government to take over judicial appointments. First, the composition of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) can be modified by Parliament by ordinary law. Second, the independence and impartiality of the proposed JAC will be undermined by the JAC Secretariat being made a department of government. Third, the expenses and salaries, etc of the JAC would not be charged to the Consolidated Fund of India and will be dependent on budgetary control by the Executive. The Supreme Court and the High courts have their independent registries, where appointments are made by or at the direction of Chief Justices (Article 146 and Article 229 respectively), ensuring total freedom from political interference and political … [Read more...] about Making judiciary more transparent
Places of Worship Act does not apply to Gyanvapi, says VHP
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has claimed that The Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act,1991 , which mandates that the character of all religious places of worship should be maintained as it was on August 15, 1947, does not apply to the Gyanvapi Mosque dispute in Varanasi. The Hindu right-wing outfit claims that there has been no change in the status of the religious structure since 1947 and that Hindus have always performed puja at the site. VHP international working president Alok Kumar said that the site where the “Shivling” was found was a temple and had been so even in 1947. He referred to it as the Gyanvapi Mandir. Civil Judge, senior division, Ravi Kumar Diwakar on Monday ordered that a portion of the Gyanvapi Mosque premises be sealed after lawyers representing five Hindu plaintiffs claimed that a “Shivling” was found in the ablution water tank of the mosque on the concluding day of a court commissioner-led video inspection. The caretakers of the mosque, however, … [Read more...] about Places of Worship Act does not apply to Gyanvapi, says VHP
“I uncover hidden UFO files. Congress is finally listening”
I first heard about the U.S. Congress hearing on UFOs the day the news of it broke in early May 2022. The first hearing of its kind in 50 years, on May 17 the House Intelligence Committee's subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Counterintelligence and Counterproliferation will discuss unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs), or UFOs to the rest of us. I knew there were rumors that it may one day happen, but I had thought we were another year out from that, given current world events and the political climate. But it sure was exciting to finally see such an important issue wind up on the calendar of U.S. Congress. I first became interested in the topic of UFOs back when I was a teenager. After seeing all sorts of stories in the news, I thought I would seek out government and military documents. I was 15, and thought perhaps I could get some answers, even though I knew there would be some level of obfuscation. As I fought for previously classified records under the Freedom of Information … [Read more...] about “I uncover hidden UFO files. Congress is finally listening”
