The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) management of turning the much-acclaimed 614 th birthday fete of Tallapaka Annamacharya into an insignificant event. Addressing reporters on Monday, the party’s State secretary Nagothu Ramesh Naidu said that Annamayya Jayanti used to be a high-profile event, with the village of Tallapaka near Rajampeta — the birthplace of the saint-poet — witnessing a lot of activity from a fortnight in advance. Social activists and students would be invited to the event in large numbers, he said. “However, the event has turned out to be a damp squib this time, with pandals erected only one day before the event. Nobody gave any information about the event,” he rued. The party leader recalled that Srivari Laddus were made available on Saturdays at Tallapaka in the past, and also flayed the TTD for removing the ticket booking counter set up here. “The tall claims of launching a music college and consecrating a … [Read more...] about BJP slams TTD for ‘scaling down’ Annamayya Jayanti’

The long awaited return of chanting
KIM KYUNG-HEE The author is the head of the Innovation Lab of the JoongAng Ilbo . Singer PSY’s performance at Sungkyunkwan University festival earlier this month became a viral video. As if venting out the pains of social distancing measures that lasted for so long, the audience sang and danced together. The spectacle was made possible as the Covid-19 social distancing measures and the ban on chanting were lifted after two years from March 2020. Chanting is the act of singing along loudly. It has the same meaning as “jechang,” or chorus, in the dictionary. However, jechang is now mostly used when singing the national anthem or “The March for the Beloved” at official events. The definition of chanting searched in the news archive can be found from the interview with singer Lee Jeong-son in the Munhwa Ilbo on May 12, 1992. “I firmly refuse the events if I am invited with many other singers, and we appear as if it is a flash fashion show or we have to chant in unison.” … [Read more...] about The long awaited return of chanting

Tolulope Osho, 31, reached the Polish border the day after Russia invaded Ukraine. He was close to safety from the war-torn land. Omicron Creates Hurdle in Lawyer Couple’s Wedding, Kerala HC Allows Online Marriage
The Kerala High Court has come to the aid of a lawyer couple, one of them in the UK, by permitting the online solemnisation of their marriage as the groom was unable to come here due to the Omicron related travel restrictions. When 25-year old lawyer Rintu Thomas and her fiance — Anantha Krishnan Harikumaran Nair — decided to get married more than a month ago, they never thought the latest COVID-19 variant Omicron could put a spanner in the works. Nair, who is in the UK for higher studies, had booked tickets to come to India on December 22 for the wedding scheduled on December 23, but due to the worldwide Omicron outbreak he was not in a position to travel. In these circumstances, Thomas moved the high court seeking a direction to the state of Kerala and the Marriage Officer, in the Sub-Registrar's office at Malayinkeezhu in Thiruvananthapuram, to permit them to conduct their marriage via virtual or online mode. According to her plea, they had given notice of the intended union on … [Read more...] about Omicron Creates Hurdle in Lawyer Couple’s Wedding, Kerala HC Allows Online Marriage

Cop pulls woman through sinking car’s sunroof in rescue caught on video
A hero cop in New York dragged an alleged drunken driver from her sinking car after she crashed it into a lake. Joanne M. Tanner, 61, had apparently been speeding when she careened off the road, through a fence, and into the water. By the time police and firefighters at the pond in Le Ray and got to Tanner's Ford Explorer, the SUV was sinking fast. After abandoning attempts to free her through the driver's-side door, a state trooper leapt onto the roof and smashed the sunroof. Dramatic footage of the rescue shows the trooper battering his way in through the glass. Tanner was so close to drowning, say officials, that the trooper could see her hair floating up to the sunroof. Then, as the car disappeared further under the surface, the trooper and firefighters hauled her to safety. In a statement obtained by Zenger News, the New York State Police (NYSP) said Friday: "On Saturday, May 7, State Police responded to a one-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 11 … [Read more...] about Cop pulls woman through sinking car’s sunroof in rescue caught on video
Thought and action: On Cong’s three-day Chintan Shivir
The three-day Nav Sankalp Chintan Shivir of the Congress in Udaipur has charted an action plan for its revival. The proof will be in its implementation, but at a minimum it acknowledges the party’s shortcomings. The party plans to give more opportunities to the youth, limit dynastic politics with a ‘one family, one ticket’ rule, and have a new deal for socially weaker groups such as the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and the minorities. In a major deviation from its earlier position, the Congress is now backing sub-quotas for SCs, STs and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the women’s reservation Bill that has been hanging fire for long. A Social Justice Advisory Council is to advise the Congress president on issues regarding socially weaker groups. Half of the party posts are to be filled with people under the age of 50, a principle that will be applied in the selection of candidates too. Other measures announced include a Public Insight Committee to gather feedback on … [Read more...] about Thought and action: On Cong’s three-day Chintan Shivir

Cannes 2022: Questions and snafus on eve of film festival
After two years of pandemic, the 75th Cannes Film Festival is getting going with a familiar dose of controversy and some new snafus as it readies for its largest gathering on the French Riviera since the 2019 edition. Preparations were in full swing up and down the Croisette on Monday ahead of the festival's opening. The festival is set to open Tuesday with “The Artist” director Michel Hazanavicius' zombie film “Z." But before things even kicked off, the festival had already found plenty of commotion. Just hours before Thierry Frémaux, the festival's artistic director, addressed the media Monday, the Hollywood trade Deadline posted an article about how it couldn't publish an interview with Frémaux after he requested alterations to his answers on subjects including women filmmakers and whether Cannes would ever again host a Roman Polanski film. “The festival has not only been demanding copy approval as a condition for interviews with Frémaux (something no other festival or … [Read more...] about Cannes 2022: Questions and snafus on eve of film festival
As cabs gets pricier, demand for BMTC airport services takes flight
The long wait and high fares for a taxi from the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) is making passengers opt for the Vayu Vajra services operated by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). The corporation has gradually increased airport bus services and is inching closer to the revenue levels before COVID-19. In March, 80 schedules of the Vayu Vajra services were operated and now, it has touched 94. On weekends, additional services are operated depending on arrivals of flights. Increased ridership has helped the corporation generate more fare box revenue. The daily revenue has jumped from ₹15.65 lakh (in March) to ₹21 lakh (in May ), getting closer to the pre-pandemic levels of around ₹24 lakh. An official of the BMTC said, “When compared to taxis, the Vayu Vajra services are a cheaper option to travel to and from the airport. This is one of the factors for increased use. On the other hand, flight operations — both domestic and international — increased from … [Read more...] about As cabs gets pricier, demand for BMTC airport services takes flight
