Overturn roe versus wade

EXPLAINER: Online privacy in a post-Roe world

August 10, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

The case of a Nebraska woman charged with helping her teenage daughter end her pregnancy after investigators obtained Facebook messages between the two has raised fresh concerns about data privacy in the post-Roe world. Since before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, Big Tech companies that collect personal details of their users have faced new calls to limit that tracking and surveillance amid fears that law enforcement or vigilantes could use those data troves against people seeking abortions or those who try to help them. Meta, which owns Facebook, said Tuesday it received warrants requesting messages in the Nebraska case from local law enforcement on June 7, before the Supreme Court decision overriding Roe came down. The warrants, the company added, “did not mention abortion at all,” and court documents at the time showed that police were investigating the “alleged illegal burning and burial of a stillborn infant." However, in early June, the mother and … [Read more...] about EXPLAINER: Online privacy in a post-Roe world

In Guam, the nearest domestic abortion clinic is 4,000 miles away. How will Roe’s reversal change the U.S. territory?

August 10, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which had made abortion a constitutionally protected right, could have a chilling effect on reproductive rights in Guam. Advocates say women have already been living under a de facto ban in the largely Catholic U.S. Pacific Island territory and fear it could get more restrictive. No surgical abortion has been performed on the island since 2018, when the last doctor trained to provide the procedure retired, according to the ACLU and the Bureau of Women’s Affairs. “People in Guam were already living in a post-Roe world,” Alexa Kolbi-Molinas, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Reproductive Freedom Project, told NBC Asian America. “This is what we will see again if extremist politicians enact new abortion bans and force women into second-class status.” The Supreme Court ruling might have ramifications for Pacific Islanders in the two other U.S. Pacific territories, the Northern Mariana Islands and … [Read more...] about In Guam, the nearest domestic abortion clinic is 4,000 miles away. Woman alleges she was sedated during abortion rights protest at Warriors game

August 10, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

An abortion rights activist filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday against the city of San Francisco and its police and fire departments, alleging she was injected with a sedative during a protest at a recent Warriors -Celtics NBA finals game. On June 13, Kareim McKnight and her friend Amanda Piasecki walked down to the floor of Chase Center during the game's first quarter, with banners reading, “Overturn Roe? Hell No!” to protest the Supreme Court’s expected decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, said the lawsuit, filed by civil rights attorney John Burris in the U.S. District Court for Northern California. As McKnight and her friend chanted, “Abortion on demand and without apology,” near seats on the floor, they were “forcibly dragged” out of the arena into the stadium garage, where McKnight was thrown to the ground and handcuffed, the complaint said. A security guard reportedly held his knee on her back, according to the complaint. McKnight expressed that she was peacefully … [Read more...] about Woman alleges she was sedated during abortion rights protest at Warriors game

Fox News’ Bizarre Reply to Trump Raid Judge’s Death Threats

August 11, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com

Hosts of the Fox News roundtable show The Five were dismissive of reports that threats have been made against the federal judge in Florida who approved the search warrant that resulted in the FBI raiding former President Donald Trump’s home in Palm Beach. Following the Monday raid, right-wing extremists have threatened the judge in online posts, with some sharing what looks to be his home address, phone numbers, and relatives’ names. Accordingly, the judge’s profile was removed from the court’s website. Commentators on the right like The Five ’s Jesse Watters have also worked to link the judge to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender, since the judge was at one point a defense attorney for Epstein’s pilots and a scheduler. When Jessica Tarlov, The Five ’s resident left-of-center co-host, noted the threats against the judge, some of which were antisemetic, the subject was immediately changed to threats against Supreme Court justices. “This judge, by the way — who … [Read more...] about Fox News’ Bizarre Reply to Trump Raid Judge’s Death Threats

Social Responsibility: Being a Brand That Actually Cares

August 10, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

To quote a study from Horizon Media from around 2014 : "81 percent of Millennials expect companies to make a public commitment to good corporate citizenship." With global climate disasters and national tragedies making headlines every day, I think it's safe to assume that this statistic remains the same — if not increased. We live in the age of acronyms, so let's talk about one that's quickly popping up on many organizations' radars: ESG, or "environmental, social, and governance." There's a lot to unpack in this term, but the gist is that when investors are looking at your company, they're analyzing more than just profit potential. They want to assess growth and risk opportunities based on your company's carbon footprint and sustainability measures, the conditions of your workforce and your overall business transparency. If your ESG analysis comes out poorly, you may not be able to count on doing well in your next rounds of fundraising. ESG sprung from the growing consumer … [Read more...] about Social Responsibility: Being a Brand That Actually Cares

The Spirit of Old West Point

February 1, 1907 by www.theatlantic.com

FEBRUARY, 1907 (1858-1862) BY MORRIS SCHAFF I ON THE THRESHOLD SOME time during the winter of 185758, I received from the Hon. Samuel S. Cox, Member of Congress from Ohio, and representing the district composed of Licking, Franklin, and Pickaway, an appointment as cadet at West Point. I know it was winter time, for, across the vanished years, I can see the family gathered before the big wood fire, and my father entering, clad in his greatcoat — he had been to Newark and on his way home had stopped at the post office in Kirkersville—and bearing in his hand a large and significant-looking official letter. Removing his coat and adjusting his glasses, he opened the communication from Washington and read my appointment. Oh, the quiet radiance of my mother’s face! And never, I think, did fire burn so cheerily as ours burned that night, — and somehow, I am fain to believe, the curling smoke communicated the news to the old farm; for every field that I had wandered over from … [Read more...] about The Spirit of Old West Point
