The bodies of three children and their mother have been recovered from a lake this weekend in what a local law enforcement official described as a "likely triple homicide." CBS Minnesota reported that the body of one child was found by divers in Vadnais Lake in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, on Friday evening, and that the other three bodies were retrieved on Saturday morning. "Our hearts go out to the families involved here, and their friends," Ramsey County Undersheriff Mike Martin said Saturday, according to the news station. "Our goal was to find the children and the mother and to return them to their families, and we're glad that we were able to do that." The news station reported that the children were all under the age of six. Authorities began searching for the mother and her three children on Friday after the Maplewood Police Department responded to a mobile home around 10:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a suicide that involved an adult male, according to the Star … [Read more...] about Bodies of three children, mom found in lake after related suicide: Sheriff

China’s top diplomat visits Myanmar amid opposition protest
China’s top diplomat on Saturday arrived on his first visit to Myanmar since the military seized power last year to attend a regional meeting that the government said was a recognition of its legitimacy and opponents protested as a violation of peace efforts. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will join counterparts from Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam in a meeting of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation group in the central city of Bagan, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The grouping is a Chinese-led initiative that includes the countries of the Mekong Delta, a potential source of regional tensions due to an increasing number of hydroelectric projects that are altering the flow and raising concerns of ecological damage. China has built 10 dams along the upper stretch of the Mekong, the part it calls the Langcang. Military government spokesman Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun told a news conference in the capital Naypyitaw on Friday that the attendance of the foreign ministers at the … [Read more...] about China’s top diplomat visits Myanmar amid opposition protest

Traffic grinds to a halt as monsoon hits Delhi
With the Capital receiving its first monsoon showers on Thursday, waterlogging was reported in many areas, including the Pragati Maidan tunnel, which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on June 19, and its surrounding roads, leading to traffic congestion in many parts of Delhi. The 1.3-km-long tunnel, which is part of the Pragati Maidan Integrated Transit Corridor project, is aimed at providing improved connectivity between the central and eastern parts of the Capital with the satellite towns of Noida and Ghaziabad. The project was entirely funded by the Centre and has been built by the Public Works Department (PWD) at a cost of over ₹920 crore. One of the men working at the site said the waterlogging was caused due to plastic waste clogging up the drains. “Two teams of five people each were involved in manually removing the waste from the drains. One set of workers attended to the waterlogging at the stretch towards ITO, while another was deployed on the stretch towards … [Read more...] about Traffic grinds to a halt as monsoon hits Delhi
Why Republicans should be nervous about their candidates for governor
WASHINGTON - Thanks to the Supreme Court, the battle for control of the House and Senate isn't the only major story in this year's midterm elections. Now there is renewed focus on the states, where a handful of gubernatorial races could change the balance of power between the parties and determine the future of abortion and voting rights, not to mention influencing who is elected president in 2024. The high court's decision overturning Roe v. Wade moves the abortion issue to the states, where legislatures and governors will determine what access, if any, women will have to abortions. In the absence of federal action, states have begun enacting laws restricting voting rights, and depending on what happens in the Supreme Court's next term, state legislatures could be even more empowered to set rules for future elections. Roughly half a dozen states - not surprisingly, they are the states that decided the 2020 presidential election and are likely to decide the 2024 race, as well - … [Read more...] about Why Republicans should be nervous about their candidates for governor
