Two diners racked up a hefty bill at a Michelin star restaurant before doing a runner without paying, according to the owners. The slap-up meal at Muse, in Yarm, Teesside, came to £150 but the pair are said to have "just got up and left" without paying their tab. CCTV stills of the alleged culprits were shared on the restaurant's Facebook page on Friday morning and a deadline of tomorrow was given before police would be contacted. The two men can be seen sat on a table outside the venue in shorts and T-shirts. They had dined at around 8.25pm yesterday, according to the post which was titled: "HELP NEEDED." It said: "Please can the two guys that just got up and left without paying their £150 bill at 8.25pm on Thursday 19th May please contact us. Donald Trump’s first openly gay judicial nominee was just approved by the Senate. Here’s why LGBT groups aren’t thrilled
Last week, the Senate approved the nomination of Mary Rowland to the District Court for the Northern District f Illinois, the first LGBT judicial nominee from Donald Trump to be confirmed by the Senate. Trump initially announced his intent to nominate Rowland, 57, back in June 2018. But the vote on her appointment stalled, along with several others, even though she sailed through her Senate Judiciary Committee hearing and got a "well qualified" rating from the American Bar Association. She was unanimously approved by a voice vote on July 31 and now awaits her judicial commission. A magistrate judge since 2012, Rowland was previously a partner in a Chicago law firm and spent a decade working in the federal public defender's office. She earned her bachelor's from the University of Michigan, her law degree from the University of Chicago and clerked for U.S. District Judge Julian Abele Cook Jr. She's a member of the Gay and Lesbian Bar Association and has done pro bono for Lambda … [Read more...] about Donald Trump’s first openly gay judicial nominee was just approved by the Senate. A Bolt From the Blue for Rural India: Lightning Strikes Cause More Deaths Than Cyclones, Floods
With the onset of the monsoon in North India, 17 people died last week due to lightning and thunderstorm-related incidents in Bihar. Six deaths were recorded in Bhagalpur district, three deaths were reported from Vaishali, Banka and Khagaria reported two deaths each and Munger, Katihar, Madhepura and Saharsa reported one death each. Although deaths due to lightning are reported as isolated incidents, the natural phenomenon, common during the monsoon, leads to more casualties, and even unaccounted deaths, than floods and cyclones in rural parts. Lightning has led to 1,697 deaths between 2020 and 2021, with a majority of the deaths reported in north Indian states, according to Annual Lightning Report 2020-2021, published jointly by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Indian Meteorological Department and other government agencies. “In North India, three states have become a challenge for us — Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, where over 1,500 people die due to lightning. This is … [Read more...] about A Bolt From the Blue for Rural India: Lightning Strikes Cause More Deaths Than Cyclones, Floods

Labour's Harriet Harman has opened up about the grief of losing her husband and renewed calls for the party's next leader to be a woman. The long-serving MP was left heartbroken Jack Dromey - the fellow MP to whom she'd been married for almost 40 years - died suddenly six months ago. "But there’s a real mystery to me in terms of…how do you kind of go forward in your life? “My mum lived until she was 100 and I might have another 30 years. So, I can’t be like, ‘Well because Jack has died, my life is over.’ “And we’ve always argued you can’t just define yourself by the man that you’re … [Read more...] about Harriet Harman opens up about late husband Jack Dromey and calls for female Labour leader

Mets stomp Rangers, 4-3, in series opener behind power from Eduardo Escobar, solid start from David Peterson
The Mets’ elixir for slumps is, apparently, playing the Texas Rangers. Eduardo Escobar (0-for-9), Mark Canha (0-for-14), and Francisco Lindor (0-for-11) all broke out of their offensive slides in the Mets’ 4-3 win over the Rangers on Friday night at Citi Field. Lindor led off the fourth with a single to right field off Texas starter Glenn Otto. Then Canha drove Lindor in with an RBI single to left. Finally, Escobar crushed a three-run home run in the fourth, his seventh of the year, and brought 35,639 fans to their feet at Citi Field. Of that trio, no one needed to break out of his skid more than Escobar. Buck Showalter gave the slumping third baseman two consecutive days off in an attempt, that perhaps worked, to turn his offensive blues around. Escobar entered Friday hitting .199 against right-handers and .178 with runners in scoring position. The Mets (48-29) snapped a three-game losing streak following their win over the Rangers. The Mets are 21-7 following a loss this … [Read more...] about Mets stomp Rangers, 4-3, in series opener behind power from Eduardo Escobar, solid start from David Peterson
How a No-Hitter Helped a Filmmaker Score With ‘Empty Bases’
Click here to read the full article. Jalmer Caceres needed to come up with a 10-page script exploring the importance of work for his application to Indeed’s Rising Voices program — time was running out. Then he thought back to a day in the summer of 1990 when the city of Los Angeles was held spellbound by a baseball game that, inning-by-inning, crept toward a no-hitter. The story for his short film “Empty Bases” just poured out of him. The film opens with live-in caretaker Blanca on the phone, remotely sharing the experience of watching the historic game on TV with her children. Blanca is the full-time live-in caretaker for a woman with dementia; when she’s at work, she connects with her children by talking baseball over the phone. When Blanca is called away to perform a series of tasks for her elderly employer, it’s unclear whether she’ll be able to return to the phone to share the game’s climactic ending with her kids. “The stakes are incredibly high … [Read more...] about How a No-Hitter Helped a Filmmaker Score With ‘Empty Bases’
Watching the midnight sun
O slo. My wristwatch says 11.45 p.m., but the sun is blazing bright and orange in the sky. No, my watch is not out of kilter. I am in Norway, the Land of the Midnight Sun, and it was June, just the right time for one to enjoy the strange spectacle of the bright sun at midnight. The conference organisers have arranged for a special Viking boat, complete with a curved bow rising majestically out of the water, for a picnic ride along the sea, and we pile in for our outing and dinner out at sea under the midnight sun. We are a motley crowd, all delegates from around the world who have congregated to attend an international women’s conference. Except for the host Norwegians, no one has seen the midnight sun, and excitement runs high among us as we gather on the waterfront. After a sumptuous buffet dinner on board, we move to the upper deck and settle down on deck chairs to watch the midnight sun. The air is clear, the sky is a brilliant blue — the sun is an incredible, fiery orange … [Read more...] about Watching the midnight sun

Is Uma coming?” asks one of the pack of New York tabloid photographers. Alas, not yet. In another corner, Elizabeth Berkley, who made her name pole dancing in Showgirls , is shifting her bare feet under a hot-pink dress, insisting to a reporter, Trendy is not really the word I would use to describe yoga.” The altars are dusted and polished, the big plywood Ganesh outfitted with a fresh new lei.
