Firing up the pottery art scene
POTTERY seems to require magic as earth, water and fire come together to be moulded into beautiful art. Each piece at the “Dao Shang Shao: Earthly Investigations 2022” pottery exhibition in Penang spoke of their maker’s mastery of the language of clay. There were 150 pieces ranging from everyday items like pots and cups to more ornamental works at the just-concluded exhibition held at Penang Institute in Brown Road, Pulau Tikus. These works of art were made by 30 local and international potters or ceramicists who reside in the state. Among them was Tan Beng Hai who described pottery as an art that was thousands of years old and yet, forever new. “Pottery is therapeutic. It calms you down and gives you peace and clarity of mind as well as the satisfaction of creation. “The availability of materials and slower pace of life in Penang makes it a good place for potters,” Tan said at the exhibition’s opening. Tenure of top two posts in AIADMK has ended, says C.Ve. Shanmugam
A day after a chaotic AIADMK general council meeting in which party workers booed its leader O. Panneerselvam, its steering committee member and former Law Minister C.Ve. Shanmugam on Friday said the tenure of the coordinator, Mr. Panneerselvam, and co-coordinator Edappadi K. Palaniswami ended on Thursday, as the amendment to the by-laws that facilitated their election to these posts was not validated by the general council. “As of today, Mr. Panneerselvam is the treasurer and Mr. Edappadi K. Palaniswami is the headquarters secretary,” he said at an interaction with journalists outside Mr. Palaniswami’s residence . Flanked by senior leaders S.P. Velumani, D. Jayakumar, Udumalai K. Radhakrishnan, C. Vijayabaskar, Pollachi V. Jayaraman and Thalavai Sundaram, Mr. Shanmugam cited party rules to reject the claims by AIADMK leader R. Vaithilingam (who has sided with Mr. Panneerselvam) that the general council meeting held on Thursday was illegal. Stating that the “then coordinator”, … [Read more...] about Tenure of top two posts in AIADMK has ended, says C.Ve. Shanmugam

‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
Click here to read the full article. Does the phrase “That’s All Right, Mama” apply to the new “ Elvis ” movie… as in, “that’s all correct, ma’am”? No one is probably expecting that ; any practiced watcher of biopics knows virtually any example will take deep liberties with the facts for dramatic purposes. And maybe it’s a given that a director who puts hip-hop and hard rock on his period-film soundtracks, as Baz Luhrmann does, might favor effect over total verisimilitude. Still, “Elvis” is right on enough counts — literally or spiritually — that it’s worth trying to separate fact from fiction in the movie’s narrative of Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler) and his nearly career-long manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). There may be no one better to go to who can provide the truth on both Presley and “the Colonel,” in tandem, than the latter’s biographer, Alanna Nash. Nash, a veteran music journalist, published “The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel … [Read more...] about ‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
Protests and celebrations as Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade: Live updates
Protests continued in cities across the country Saturday after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that had guaranteed the right to abortion in the United States. As states began to enact abortion bans and clinics stopped offering the procedure, large crowds gathered in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, some jubilant, others dismayed at the decision that stripped away women’s constitutional right to abortion. Both sides predicted the fight over abortion would continue. Key highlights: President Joe Biden called it a “sad day” for the U.S. and said it would be up to voters in November to select candidates who would protect a host of rights — not just abortion but also marriage equality and the right to contraception. Centrist Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, suggested they were misled by Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, two key votes in the decision to overturn Roe. Google Says Italian Spyware Has Targeted Apple and Android Phones
Alphabet Inc.’s Google in a report said that a hacking tool developed in Italy was used to spy on Apple Inc. and Android handsets in Kazakhstan and the European country. Additionally, the report highlighted that RCS Lab, a Milan-based company whose website lists European law enforcement agencies as clients, created tools to spy on private messages and contacts of the targeted devices. Google said: “These vendors are enabling the proliferation of dangerous hacking tools and arming governments that would not be able to develop these capabilities in-house.” This comes at a time when American and European regulators consider possible updates to the laws governing the sale and import of spyware. Meanwhile, RCS Lab stated that its goods and services are compliant with European regulations and support criminal investigations by law enforcement. Furthermore, it told Reuters that “RCS Lab personnel are not exposed, nor participate in any activities conducted by the relevant customers”, … [Read more...] about Google Says Italian Spyware Has Targeted Apple and Android Phones
Asian carp threaten the Great Lakes. Will calling them ‘copi’ help?
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 As a brand, Asian carp have two big problems: The name strikes many as both racially insensitive and decidedly unpalatable -- a trash fish. How about some "copi" instead? In a marketing event Wednesday, Illinois officials announced the focus-group-approved name for the prolific invasive species. With the fresh consumer brand, they are seeking to gut the fish's numbers and reduce the looming ecological threat it poses to the Great Lakes. Soon, they hope, folks will be noshing on copi sliders and cooking up copi tacos, eating into the invader's population. " 'Copi' rose to the top. It's kind of fresh, maybe kind of Mediterranean," Kevin Irons, assistant fisheries chief at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, said of the two-year name search. "Copi sounded like a fish." That's copi as in copious, which from an environmental perspective is the problem … [Read more...] about Asian carp threaten the Great Lakes. Will calling them ‘copi’ help?
