Ron DeSantis: SCOTUS ‘Answered the Prayers of Millions Upon Millions of Americans’
The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) answered the prayers of “millions upon millions” of Americans by properly interpreting the Constitution, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said in a statement Friday following the SCOTUS ruling overturning Roe v. Wade . “The prayers of millions have been answered. For nearly fifty years, the U.S. Supreme Court has prohibited virtually any meaningful pro-life protection, but this was not grounded in the text, history, or structure of the Constitution,” DeSantis said in a statement. Where is abortion legal? In red states, women navigate a chaotic abortion landscape
ATLANTA — The impact was immediate: the moment the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe vs. Wade , Robin Marty, the operations director of the West Alabama Women’s Center in Tuscaloosa, told nurses, desk staff and a doctor on Friday they could no longer provide abortions. “I can’t believe they f—ing did it,” she said via phone. “You have to stop now!” Just as Roe was a landmark case for women’s rights in 1973, its reversal Friday is a resounding, if expected, ruling that will again reshape abortion in this volatile and divided nation. It left millions of women in conservative states wondering what their options are. Marty’s clinic staff had to tell more than 20 patients in their waiting room that they could continue their ultrasounds and counseling, but could not have their abortions. Then they began calling up about 100 patients, one by one, to cancel appointments and refer them to a clinic about 200 miles away in Atlanta, where the procedure is still legal. But the Atlanta … [Read more...] about Where is abortion legal? In red states, women navigate a chaotic abortion landscape
‘Trigger Law’ States Are Flying Blind Without Biden’s Guidance
Months after the White House promised an “ all-of-government approach ” to address the looming end of nationwide abortion access, providers, patients, and prosecutors across the country are still waiting for federal guidance on whether the procedure will soon be a crime in their own state. Legal experts and abortion-rights advocates have been sounding the alarm for months that the nationwide patchwork of pre- Roe v. Wade abortion bans, post- Roe “trigger laws” and other legislation restricting abortion access will lead to legal chaos now that the Supreme Court has struck down the constitutional right to an abortion. As the national grapples with the implications of the nation’s highest court’s decision ruling against abortion access in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization , the Department of Justice has still not issued any public guidance for officials in states where some of those laws are mutually contradictory. “That’s going to lead to potential chaos, … [Read more...] about ‘Trigger Law’ States Are Flying Blind Without Biden’s Guidance

Border Agents Stop Driver Attempting To Smuggle Enough Fentanyl To Kill Around 2 Million People
Border Patrol agents in California on Monday seized enough fentanyl to kill over 2 million people. Agents in the El Centro border sector searched the vehicle at a highway checkpoint, where they found six black packages wrapped in cellophane hidden inside the car’s dashboard and air vents, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said Wednesday. The male driver, 53, and the female passenger, 27, in the car were both from Mexico and didn’t have the proper documents to be in the U.S. The seizure included 4.2 kilograms of fentanyl and 2.1 kilograms of heroin, according to CBP. Using the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) own metric that 1 kilogram of fentanyl could kill 500,000 people, the fentanyl seized has the potential to kill around 2.1 million people. Together, the drugs had an estimated street value of $189,200, according to CBP. With Roe dead, Republicans call for abortion bans in all states
WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court’s ruling allowing states to set their own abortion laws will immediately halt the procedure in several states and thrust the issue of reproductive rights into this fall’s midterm elections. The decision will also put significant pressure on President Biden — a late-comer to the modern abortion rights movement — to take steps to fortify abortion access, even though it is unclear what executive action is available to him. Social conservatives who have been trying to reverse the 1973 Roe vs. Wade ruling for decades promised to build on their efforts by pushing for abortion bans in every state or antiabortion legislation at the federal level, particularly if they make gains in Congress in November’s elections. Former Vice President Mike Pence said social conservatives in the post-Roe era “must not rest and must not relent until the sanctity of life is restored to the center of American law in every state in the land.” Politics In … [Read more...] about With Roe dead, Republicans call for abortion bans in all states
