TikTok is a “powerful propaganda tool” that should be banned, a panelist on “Real Time With Bill Maher” said Friday night, calling the Chinese-owned app “a defense threat.” “Imagine a brain jack inserted into the neural network of two-thirds of our youth under the age of 25, who spend more time on TikTok than every other media source combined,” said Scott Galloway, a professor of marketing at New York University. “And then imagine how easy it would be to put your thumb on the scale of anti-American content and recognize that they would be stupid not to elegantly, insidiously, covertly, raise a generation of American civil, nonprofit, military, government leaders, day by day, minute by minute, who just feel a little shittier about America.” (RELATED: ‘He Won’t Protect America’: Gov. Noem Predicts Biden Won’t Sign Ban On TikTok) “If we had that tool with China, we would do the exact same thing,” Galloway continued. “This is a defense threat, it should absolutely be banned.” … [Read more...] about ‘Powerful Propaganda Tool’: Bill Maher Panelists React To TikTok Ban Proposals

Ocasio-Cortez Goes on TikTok to Argue Against Banning TikTok
It was a bruising week for TikTok on Capitol Hill, but as momentum grew among Democrats and Republicans to ban the Chinese-owned video app over national security concerns, it gained an influential ally: Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat of New York who is known for her own large social media following, waded into the debate just before midnight on Friday by posting a video on — what else? — TikTok. The video , her first on the platform, had garnered 1.5 million views by early Saturday morning. In it, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez argues that President Biden and colleagues in both parties were “putting the cart before the horse” and rushing prematurely to cut off more than 150 million American users from the popular platform. She does not directly address their concerns that the Chinese authorities could exploit the app to monitor Americans or spread misinformation. “If we want to make a decision as significant as banning TikTok, and we believe — or … [Read more...] about Ocasio-Cortez Goes on TikTok to Argue Against Banning TikTok
Leaked Speech Excerpts Show a Hillary Clinton at Ease With Wall Street
In lucrative paid speeches that Hillary Clinton delivered to elite financial firms but refused to disclose to the public, she displayed an easy comfort with titans of business, embraced unfettered international trade and praised a budget-balancing plan that would have required cuts to Social Security, according to documents posted online Friday by WikiLeaks. The tone and language of the excerpts clash with the fiery liberal approach she used later in her bitter primary battle with Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and could have undermined her candidacy had they become public. Mrs. Clinton comes across less as a firebrand than as a technocrat at home with her powerful audience, willing to be critical of large financial institutions but more inclined to view them as partners in restoring the country’s economic health. In the excerpts from her paid speeches to financial institutions and corporate audiences, Mrs. Clinton said she dreamed of “open trade and open borders” throughout … [Read more...] about Leaked Speech Excerpts Show a Hillary Clinton at Ease With Wall Street
Dingell: TikTok CEO’s Testimony ‘Disturbing’ — He Wouldn’t Commit to Not Selling Data That Is ‘a Weapon’ to National Security
On Friday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) stated that TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew’s testimony before Congress was “disturbing” and noted that he dodged on whether he’ll commit to abstain from selling data in the future. Dingell also stated that people’s data “becomes a weapon to their own personal security and our national security.” Dingell stated, “I do think that yesterday was a disturbing day, in that he confirmed a lot of people’s suspicions in his not answering questions directly. I asked him if he would commit to not sell data down the road. And he gave a non-answer, which he gave multiple times. I do believe that the committee is united that we must do something about privacy. I will say, there are members on both sides of the aisle that believe we need to ban TikTok. For me individually, I’m not sure I’m ready to ban one company. I think we need privacy legislation across all platforms. And people really do not understand what is … [Read more...] about Dingell: TikTok CEO’s Testimony ‘Disturbing’ — He Wouldn’t Commit to Not Selling Data That Is ‘a Weapon’ to National Security
Brooks: TikTok Part of the ‘Battlefield’ in ‘Cold War’ with China
On Friday’s “PBS NewsHour,” New York Times columnist David Brooks stated that “We’re in the middle of a cold war with China” and technology like TikTok is “the battlefield” in this cold war. Brooks said, “We’re in the middle of a cold war with China. It’s started. And this has happened over two administrations, but especially with the Biden administration. It’s now official U.S. policy — and I support it, I’m just saying how stark and dramatic we should take it — official U.S. policy to ban…the chips and the technology used to make the chips that could go into a phone, a car, a toaster, or a missile, or a drone, or A.I. technology. So, we are now really trying to crack down on, not the Chinese military, but the Chinese economy, because there’s really no difference between these two things. So that is just a very stark thing. So, if you’re wondering, were we in a cold war? Well, we were against the Soviets. We’re now behaving like we are against China. And I think we are with the … [Read more...] about Brooks: TikTok Part of the ‘Battlefield’ in ‘Cold War’ with China
Teachers press school safety at Colorado Capitol in wake of East High shooting
Colorado teachers flooded into the state Capitol Friday to press for better protections for students and school staff after a 17-year-old Denver student shot two administrators , fled to the mountains and killed himself. Roughly 1,500 teachers and their supporters called for improved school security, more mental health support and tighter gun control measures, adding to pressure on lawmakers a day after students and parents converged at the Capitol to make similar demands. School shootings are becoming increasingly frequent in the U.S., and teachers at the rally voiced the fears they feel during safety lockdowns that are now regular occurrences. They also raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s shooting at East High School, which came as the boy was being patted down for weapons, a daily requirement because of his behavioral issues including a pending firearm charge , according to school officials. Some East High School teachers at Friday’s … [Read more...] about Teachers press school safety at Colorado Capitol in wake of East High shooting
