About Time!: Bloomberg Wakes Up to the Dangers of Google’s Surveillance Capitalism

May 16, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

Corporate media juggernaut Bloomberg is finally waking up to the dangers of surveillance capitalism, the prevalent business model the Masters of the Universe, but practiced more aggressively and successfully by Google than any other player on today’s web. Writing in a Bloomberg article titled : “Google Is Sharing Our Data at a Startling Scale” which was also published by the Washington Post, Parmy Olsen the troubling deluge of advertising enabled by Google’s real-time bidding business practice exposes us to the ad market an astonishing 747 times each day. And that is only from Google — it doesn’t include advertising powerhouse Facebook or up and comer Amazon. Sabo mocks Google CEO Sundar Pichai (unsavoryagents.com) It is hard for humans to conceptualize such numbers, even if machines calculate them comfortably everyday — but if the exhaust of our personal data could be seen in the same way pollution can, we’d be surrounded by an almost impenetrable haze that gets … [Read more...] about About Time!: Bloomberg Wakes Up to the Dangers of Google’s Surveillance Capitalism

Woman receives mysterious decades-old letters, confusing even post office

May 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A New York woman was left puzzled after she received several mysterious postcards written by her late mother and dated back to 1960. In early April, Carol Hover of Hornell, New York, received a postcard in the mail dated August 30, 1960. "The first thing I noticed was my mother's handwriting," Hover told WETM . "She passed away back in 2014. I found that it was postmarked from Canada in August of 1960. So, they would have been on their honeymoon." At first, Hover thought this card was a strange fluke in the system, but then she received more postcards. Although it's hard to measure, it is estimated that less than three percent of mail gets lost in the United States. If a package or letter is recovered after a search request is filed, the U.S. Postal Service will resend the mail. For some packages, the shipping label might have fallen off during the shipment process or someone used an incorrect address so it was undeliverable. Other instances include bad weather rubbing … [Read more...] about Woman receives mysterious decades-old letters, confusing even post office

May 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

An IHOP customer's temper tantrum about service that he deemed too slow was captured on camera Saturday night. The confrontation was filmed by onlooker Thomas Biddle, whose TikTok video has racked up 6.5 million views as of Monday afternoon. Another patron who witnessed the incident said on Facebook that it took place at one of the breakfast chain's locations in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Biddle's clip showed the furious customer berating a waitress for the time it took to serve his food, claiming that the restaurant should not be busy because he saw other tables open. "Busy would be every single table," he shouted while waving his arm in the air. "There are three servers on, sir," the waitress replied. "We can only do so much. If you don't like it, you can go somewhere else. Who else is open?" "Nobody else," the customer answered. IHOP is known for keeping many of its locations open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. "Then deal with it," said the increasingly agitated … [Read more...] about IHOP customer smashes glass after “slow service” in wild video

Hiam Abbass and Slimane Dazi talk of ‘Oussekine’

May 16, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

On December 6, 1986, in Paris, police chased and beat Malik Oussekine to death. That was a turning point in the student protests against university reforms under the Devaquet Law. Oussekine, a 22-year-old student, was not a participant in the demonstrations — he was walking alongside the protesters on the way home. The fallout of the police brutality, the subsequent cover-up and the Oussekine family’s attempts for justice and to make sense of their dreadful loss are the subject of Antoine Chevrollier’s gripping four-part series, Oussekine . Hiam Abbass who plays Malik’s mother, Aicha, says she was not living in France during the incident. Speaking over a video call from Paris, Abbass says, “I knew Antoine was writing something about a kid who was killed by the police. I didn’t know who Malik Oussekine was. When it became clear to Antoine where he was going with the story, he told me he was writing a part for me and he wanted my interpretation of the mother of this boy.” … [Read more...] about Hiam Abbass and Slimane Dazi talk of ‘Oussekine’

Boris Johnson and Irish foreign minister share hope for ‘landing zone’ on Northern Ireland Protocol ahead of crisis talks

May 16, 2022 by news.sky.com

The prime minister is expected in Northern Ireland today as efforts to break the political deadlock at Stormont intensify. Boris Johnson will hold talks with party leaders and attempt to persuade the Democratic Unionists to enter the power sharing government. Sinn Fein is now the largest party but its vice president, Michelle O'Neill, cannot become first minister without a Unionist deputy first minister. The DUP has blocked the formation of a new devolved administration over the Northern Ireland Protocol and resulting sea border. Boris Johnson may be forced to choose between a government in Belfast or the treaty he agreed with the EU. Advertisement Sky News political editor Beth Rigby understands that the aim is to work towards restoring democracy and "safeguarding peace" by "addressing the legitimate concerns that prevent the majority community (unionists) from power sharing with Sinn Fein." Despite the sabre-rattling about legislating unilaterally … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson and Irish foreign minister share hope for ‘landing zone’ on Northern Ireland Protocol ahead of crisis talks
