Customers at Murphy USA gas stations have claimed in recent weeks that they've received diesel fuel instead of regular gasoline when filling up their vehicles. A driver in Claremore, Oklahoma, said that her car was filled with diesel at a Murphy USA location, news station KOTV reported. "Noticed after driving my car just a little ways it started bogging down, my jeep was bogging down, not having power, kind of spurting, things like that," the customer, Kelly Watson, told the news station. She said she learned that others had reported similar problems and that she may have to spend hundreds of dollars to repair her car after the alleged mixup. But she told KOTV that she hopes the company will cover the costs. "It's just aggravating, nobody has that type of money, you go get gas, you trust it to be gas," Watson said. Last month in Wichita Falls, Texas, news station KFDX reported that several people claimed their cars were filled with diesel instead of normal gasoline at a … [Read more...] about Drivers claim trend in gas station wrongly putting diesel in tanks

Top California environment official leaving state government
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Jared Blumenfeld, California's top environmental regulator and a key climate adviser to Gov. Gavin Newsom, will leave the administration at the end of the month, Newsom announced Friday. Newsom, a Democrat, appointed Blumenfeld as secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency on his first day in office in 2019. Blumenfeld will become president of the Waverley Street Foundation, a $3 billion climate initiative funded by Laurene Powell Jobs. As head of the state’s environmental agency, he was responsible for departments that regulate air pollution, water use, recycling, toxic substances, pesticides, environmental health hazards like extreme heat. Yana Garcia, special assistant attorney general focused on environmental issues in the California Department of Justice, will take over as head of the California EPA next month. Blumenfeld said the agency now rivals the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in its staff and budget. ‘I was so poor I stole sandwiches from Poundland and have cold baths to save money’
A desperate Brit says he was forced to steal sandwiches from Poundland due to the crippling cost of living crisis. Former delivery driver Steve Anthony, 42, said he had exhausted "every other avenue" before pinching the food. Mr Anthony stopped shoplifting after receiving help from a local community hub, although many other Brits are turning to crime to survive. Shops have reported a big rise in theft of essential low-value items from milk, cheese and cooking oil to baby milk and nappies. Mum-of-four Lisa Ann has also admitted that she too had stolen from a Co-op due to soaring energy and food prices. Both she and Steve also save money through various means, such as washing themselves in cold water and eating just once a day as a result of the cost of living crisis. Household energy bills increased by 54 per cent in April this year, and are likely to continue spiralling with analysts predicting that the October price cap could hit £3,359. Steve, from Sheffield, … [Read more...] about ‘I was so poor I stole sandwiches from Poundland and have cold baths to save money’
Congress OKs Dems’ climate, health bill, a Biden triumph
By ALAN FRAM WASHINGTON (AP) — A divided Congress gave final approval Friday to Democrats’ flagship climate and health care bill, handing President Joe Biden a back-from-the-dead triumph on coveted priorities that the party hopes will bolster their prospects for keeping their hold on Congress in November’s elections. The House used a party-line 220-207 vote to pass the legislation, which is but a shadow of the larger, more ambitious plan to supercharge environment and social programs that Biden and his party envisioned early last year. Even so, Democrats happily declared victory on top-tier goals like providing Congress’ largest ever investment in curbing carbon emissions, reining in pharmaceutical costs and taxing large companies, a vote they believe will show they can wring accomplishments from a routinely gridlocked Washington that often disillusions voters. “Today is a day of celebration, a day we take another giant step in our momentous agenda,” said House Speaker Nancy … [Read more...] about Congress OKs Dems’ climate, health bill, a Biden triumph
Worker urged to warn new hires about boss’s “disabling” job
A factory worker wondering whether they should scare off potential employees before the job "disables" them is being cheered online. In a post to Reddit 's r/antiwork forum on August 12, user u/turtleybob explained their employer is struggling with high turnover. Of the 10 new workers hired in the last three months, only one stuck around for more than two weeks. "Almost every employee who decided to accept the job had to quit after a few years because they developed chronic back or arm pain and other issues," they wrote. Desperate, their employers are now targeting high school students to fill the gap because "they're younger and they should be able to work here for a while before it disables them." "I feel like telling everybody who comes in for an interview to turn tail and run if they value not being in constant pain," they said. "'Nobody wants to work hard anymore.' Maybe nobody wants to become disabled for s*** wages, no benefits, and having to put up with my piece … [Read more...] about Worker urged to warn new hires about boss’s “disabling” job
Consumer Sentiment Remains Mired Near All-Time Low as Current Conditions Sink Further
U.S. consumers remain in a deep funk about the economy. The University of Michigan’s survey of consumer sentiment showed that perceptions of current economic conditions fell in early August despite lower gas prices pushing down headline inflation in July. The year-ahead outlook, on the other hand, improved significantly, indicating that U.S. households are not as deeply depressed about the future. Despite the improved outlook, expectations remain far below where they were a year ago. The index of consumer sentiment moved up “very slightly” to 55.1 from 51.5. The index of current conditions fell to 55.5 from 58.1 a month ago. The index of expected conditions rose to 54.9 from the extremely dim reading of 47.3 in July. “At the same time, high income consumers, who generate a disproportionate share of spending, registered large declines in both their current personal finances as well as buying conditions for durables,” said Joanne Hsu, the director of the survye. … [Read more...] about Consumer Sentiment Remains Mired Near All-Time Low as Current Conditions Sink Further
House Dems Send Sweeping Spending Bill to Biden’s Desk
The most ambitious Democratic legislation since the Affordable Care Act is now officially on its way to President Joe Biden’s desk. On Friday afternoon, the U.S. House passed a $430 billion bill focused on climate change, health care, and tax reform by a margin of 220 to 207, with all Democrats voting for the bill and all Republicans voting against it. With the U.S. Senate having approved the bill on a party-line margin on Sunday, Democrats are heading into the August recess—and the heart of the 2022 campaign season—invigorated, having finally notched a legislative win that had escaped them for over a year. The bill with the midterm-focused name of the “Inflation Reduction Act” is the culmination of Democrats’ tortured quest to see how much of their agenda they could stuff into a bill without losing a single vote in the Senate and more than a handful of votes in the House. The legislation heading to the White House now does not, contrary to its name, do much to … [Read more...] about House Dems Send Sweeping Spending Bill to Biden’s Desk
